Fantastic! I really enjoyed seeing how you were able to design a full circuit layout without having to extend the shelves themselves! Think your overhead rigs and the poles that are joined together with a chain just makes the whole layout look exciting! It reminds me of a model shop I used to go to when I was a child and they had G-scale trains running up and down on the ceiling, happy memories! 🙂 I'm Really looking forward to seeing more of your G-scale layout in action!

Another idea, as the wagons are big enough; build in decouplers in both ends of the train, and let the locomotive decouple pass the train, recouple and shuttle the other way. Awesome job on getting those supports in the ceiling! Reminds me of a toy museum in my youth, it had a big train room with a G scale track suspended from the ceiling not unlike yours.
Great video, Rob! Always enjoy seeing more G-Gauge on RU-vid! Really impressed with how you approached the suspended aspects of the railway. A lot of thought and creativity with the 3D printer. You also did a wonderful job of explaining some of the niche aspects of G Scale (such as push-through, non-isolating points as well as the -rubber ruler- nature of the 'scale'). What a marvelous introduction to G scale... thanks million, Rob! For a number of years since retirement I've "toyed" with the notion of a model railway. Little by little I've added Bachman auto-reversing track to my annual Christmas setup that quickly went from fireplace mantel to floor in front and underneath the grand piano that sits too close for us to use the fireplace proper. Going over and over possibilities in my mind, though-something not unfamiliar to you, I fancy-I'd essentially come up with just the setup you take us thorough here, although not on a shelf, but rather on the floor. Now reenergized by your excellent tutorial I'm off to find a simple yet fairly comprehensive explanation of the nitty gritties of the scale: best sources, product reviews, track radii, and so forth. If you have a favorite website (or favorites) I'd be ever so grateful for your guidance. (Perhaps you yourself have put together such a guide. I'm writing this without having looked through your own catalogue of videos.) In any event, best of luck from a new fan in northeast Iowa, USA!

Rob, this is really inspiring, bit of an eye opener for me, and it's got me thinking I need to build one. Really good fun which is what it's all about.
It won't get much bigger as I don't have the capacity, but I've got a few more locos to film. The Bachmann Big Hauler is not enjoying the point work at all currently, so will be in the siding until I can get the pony truck to stay on the track.
@@LittleWicketRailway Cheers. Yes, I’ve got one of those too and have the same issues. I used some of those weights that tyre fitters use - they’re self adhesive and quite handy 👍🏻
@@LittleWicketRailway it’s the same “big hauler” loco you have, albeit a different colour scheme. Although they were designed to work over R1 curves and points, they have always been a bit susceptible to derailing due to the pony truck. Hopefully a bit of weight will help solve it 👌🏻

Great idea this presentation, and your layout too ! It's interesting to have an overview of G scale with you, there is nice ideas to pick here for any scale. I might someday go into Gn15 (1/24 scale with 16,5mm gauge) for a freelance narrow gauge railway...
@@LittleWicketRailway As prototype, I'm thinking of two possibilities : Irish turf railway or east European industrial railway. We had also factory railways in France with a 400mm gauge track that can do the trick. I have also an idea of an airbase facility railway for a US military installation on a Pacific island or, this one fictional, a railway for a research station in Antarctica. That's some ideas on my list for this scale/gauge.

Greta video rob! So looking forward to any updates but also to your next 00 gauge review! Id really reccommend a loco from hornbys railroad plus range, the class 37 in intercity swallow livery - its a great loco for the price!
I own the same Hornby Railroad 37 and the gearing on the motor is awful. Was promised a 5 pole motor with flywheel, I think it actually had a Scalextric/pocket rocket motor
@Northerner_Transport_Hub how old is your loco? It may be the slightly older version, as the one I have was only released a year or so ago and definitely has a 5 pole motor fitted

Thanks Martin. Yeah, I pinched one of the DCC40 modules off my OO layout, same principles apply. Gaugemaster did a series of articles on reverse loops (www.gaugemasterretail.com/rightlines-article/reverse_loops_part2.html). They say that the DCC40 module might not work with Hornby controllers, but I've not had any problems. I have a feeling that the DCC40 doesn't work on analogue/DC layouts, I think I tried it quite some time ago and the relay in it just clicks on/off endlessly (prepared to be corrected on that one). Also, the short circuit detection in my DCC++ / DCC-EX command station worked faster than the detection unit in the DCC40 module, so it was killing power to the track faster than the DCC40 could react to the short and switch polarity. I had to reduce the sensitivity of the short detection in the command station and it all worked fine after.
Great little solution, and what did we do before 3D printers?!? Presumably you can't get into the roof space above to ensure you're not just relying on rawlplugs to hold the track up? I'm sure i've seen (in German model railway publications at least) LGB also referred to as IIm - i.e. 2 Scale, metre gauge. Sprung points used to be common with contintenal manufacturers like Fleischmann, Casadio etc, and I think they are/were commonly used on UK tramways (1:1 scale)
Thabks. I can't get up there to check unfortunately, but they're plasterboard rawl plugs that expand out behind the board. I'm confident that a single plug would hold a loco. So as long as I don't try to do pull ups on them they should be OK.
Be careful with that Bachman big Hauler. The early versions had plastic gears and weren't designed for heavy cars or long trains. Dad and i learned the hard way years ago. But they can be fun.
wondering how long before you find you need some more shelves to take the stuff you took off that one and then wondering how long before you take everything off and add another scale and then how long before more shelves.. I think the secret is to have a rule "no shelf large enough to take a length of track"

Hi Rob, a quick question you or your viewers might be able to help me with. I’m planning a layout with two tracks in a run around (tale chaser). It’s about 7m x 3m, so about 20m (60ft) in circumference. I’m use DCC for the tracks. But I think I’ll use a CDU to power the 40 or so seep point motors. It’s Old school I know but it’s quicker and cheaper. Q1. If the wires are big enough, will only one or two CDU do the job ? Q2. If I want to build a mimic board, the push buttons on it are a long way away from the furtherest point motor 10m (30ft). Due to voltage drop, Is this a problem ? Any tips and tricks would be much appreciated. Thanks, Alan
Hi Alan I don't have a lot of experience with installing CDUs (the Hornby accessory decoders have them built in), but I think it really depends how many points you plan to throw either simultaneously or in quick succession as the CDU might only have enough energy stored to handle one or two before needing to recharge. In theory you could run a large number off a single CDU if you give it time to recharge between each point being thrown. I wouldn't worry about voltage drop over 10m as long as your wires are an ok size. I LOVE the track plan and do think that it is a great idea to not put electronics on top of the helix as it stops confusion. Keep up the good work 👍
Congratulations on thinking outside of the box and there’s no denying your excellent workmanship. You’ve got me thinking now, I model in O gauge, so I would scale down to HO or N. By keeping to the far side of my model railroad I would hopefully be able take advantage of so called ‘false perspective’ and actually incorporate it into my existing O gauge layout.
