Introducing ferrets to each other

I've introduced my ferrets in a park :-D Let them fool around for an afternoon, two days in a row. The second day they were all exited to see each other again, we could tell right away.

Perfect timing! I have 2 girls and am supposed to go pick up my 3rd ferret this evening. He is a 2 yr old silver mitt. I am very excighted.

Always happy to see ferret videos and this was informative however I am a bit concerned about some information that was not included. The FIRST thing you need to do when bringing a new ferret home is to quarantine it in one room and keep it separate from other ferrets for 2 weeks. Take the new ferret to the vet to check for ear mites, gut parasites and viruses that are very contagious. The new ferret needs to be treated before introduction. This separation is needed for building trust in you too and feeling secure. It also helps to transition food now. THEN you start bedding swapping each night so they get used to the other's scent. When all ferrets are sleeping in the other's bedding and not puffing or excessively smelling it, then you can start daily introductions in a neutral space. Neutral is where none of them eat, sleep or play. When they aren't dominance fighting after 15, then 30 mins and neither is avoiding the other, then its ok to put the cages together. When they start noticeably playing, dooking and cuddling, then they are ready to share a cage. I got all this information from watching a LOT of other videos from ferret groups. They all say that the initial separation and later introduction is absolutely necessary to prevent illness, injury and possibly traumatizing the new ferret beyond repair. The new ferret will be dealing with a new home, new owner that they don't trust yet, and to add a new ferret or more at the same time is asking too much. Let the newbie get comfortable with you and its surroundings before meeting their new siblings who are going to give it a hard time as initiation. no problem, its always nice to know people think about their new pets before going out and buying when they are unprepared. its sad how many animals get abandoned or mistreat simply because the person didn't think before they bought.

I just got a 2 month old female and we already have a 10 month old male ferret. At first they just kind of smelled each other but now Kevin (The male ferret) tends to bite lily around her ear and on the back of her head. I am going to try some of these methods to see if they actually start getting along.

my male ferret is about 8 months old, and we play with him all the time but i feel like he gets a little lonely somtimes. (he's seriously never in his cage, he literally only goes in to eat and sleep.) and he needs someone to be a little jerk with lol. I'm hoping since hes still young and he has a very playful personality, he has met dogs and cats and gets along just fine (apart from trying to play too much and annoying my fat cat lol)

It will vary from vet to vet, so go and check with your local vet/ good ferret vet as they should have a price list. You will probably pay for the consult and for any meds they give you. Although if your ferrets are insured you may not need to pay (depends on the policy). The little black bugs could be fleas or some kind of mite, so you will need to wash all bedding (boil wash) or get new stuff (when they have been treated) and scrub the cage. hope you can get it sorted.

Yes, they can live alone as long as you give them plenty of attention and let them free room through your house a lot. : )

I just recently introduced an older ferret that is a rescue. he seems to not be too happy with my other two. But there is no fluffing of the tail or other signs of distress. just like sibling arguements. my first two are babies and my third is an older male.

i have a 3 year old ferret and a about 1 year old ferret male and female i have had the 3 year old a few months and i got the 1 year old one a few days ago im trying to introduce them right now they are staying in separate cages till they get use to each other im worried because whenever they are out in the ferret room my 3 year old hisses at my new one quit a bit i never heard him do it till my 1 ear old came along is this normal what can i do?

I got a ferret recently. And im so happy to have him as my companion!! its been 4 days since i got him(got him on Thursday) and i just want to check if he's doing fine. Can you list any signs that a ferret might be still nervous, scared, stressed, etc. from moving to a new house? Ok so I just got a 1 month baby ferret and I introduced her to my male and female(they are unsexed) and all he does and goes after her and bites her neck and make her squeal really loud. I don't know what to do because every time I try to put them together he just bites her.

I have a 2 year old female and just recently added a 7 mo old male rescue. They are both spayed or neutered. I followed all these suggestions and they still don't seem to get along. My female has always preferred my company to other animals and humans (only child syndrome I fear). They play on occasion but Tuk (the larger male by 3 lbs) always backs away and retreats. I can't see any direct change in them, but the male always hisses and backs away. My female maintains run of the place, but Tuk always retreats into the closet he has claimed as his "safe space". Nori (my female) never follows him, but puffs up when he comes out. Is this normal territorial behavior or should I be worried? She always scent marks everything, including me. I want him to feel welcome and comfortable here, but it's almost been three months and she still seems to view him as an interloper.

Hi I own ferrets for working like to send out rabbits my first ferret was a poltry and then I got my self a older albino silver I uterjust them to each other they were playing but one startted to bite then I did it again but he stared straight away fighting what can I do because there in two different places and they are for working soo if they don’t get a long they can’t work together

I have a question. i was wondering how to go about introducing my older cat to my new ferrets. i have had my cat for about 11 years so she is a bit older now and has a 'whatever' attitude about pretty much everything but i still want to make sure i am introducing them in the right way. I have been letting my cat get used to the empty cage first and she doesn't show any interest in it. good sign?

He's always the sweetest, gentlest little guy.We got him some new treats that he's crazy for. He loves them so much that if we try to take one from him, he shrieks and bites, drawing blood. I already have a fixed male ferret and i have been thinking about getting a second. Is it true that ferrets that are bonded to each other like people less? My ferret is only bonded to me right now and I dont want to loose that. He gets lots of attention from both my mom and I and does have play mates, as my dog and cat love to play with him.

How do you reduce the ferret smell on work clothes, coats, etc.?

I have a 8 month old ferret named Otis. He's been a solo ferret (up until now) who has a double unit ferret nation cage. I wanted to get another fuzzy so he could have a buddy when I'm at work. I just got a female who I named lily. My problem is that lily is only 6 weeks old. She has a separate cage near Otis with some of his blankets so she can smell him. When I let them have time together in another room it's very supervised. Otis will usually bite lily on the back side of the neck. I never see any head shaking or real aggression. Lily will make some noises but if I separate her she always comes back for more immediately. Any tips?

help! i tried introducing my 4 ferrets today (2 groups of 2) 2 of my ferrets were chasing each other around a lot and they did a thing where they scruffed one and dragged them (no shaking at all) across the floor for a couple seconds. then i had to hold aspen until she let go which took like 7 seconds. he (one being dragged) wasn’t bleeding and only had a little spit on the back of the neck. so idk anymore i’m worried and scared to let them meet again

Can you please help me- I have had Oliver for two years.. unfortunately he was bonded with Meeko (my first ferret) since I got him- I got Meeko first and then 4 months later got Oliver. Then Meeko died at a year and a month old from kidney stones.. I had to put him down because over 50% of his urinary tract was stones.. the only place I can get ferret is from petco. There are no breeders in New England USA so a lot have been having kidney stones from birth from genetic issues. So once I lost Meeko I was devastated and only purchase very very very high quality ferret kibble- I tried to get Oliver on a raw diet but he is SOOOO picky. He won’t even eat treats or chicken.. he only eats two types of kibble and to get him to switch to the healthy kibble took me almost six months and he lost so much weight from not eating.. so a week after Meeko I got Oliver a new friend named Theo. I didn’t mean for this to happen but Theo grew up looking almost exactly like Meeko and they had very similar personalities.. well at 8 months old Theo had the same problem and more than 60% of his tract was kidney stones.. and I know it wasn’t the food or water :( I’ve been so devastated by losing my babies from this.. well I just got a third baby and this time I got a darker one like Oliver- instead of a lighter shade like Meeko and Theo.. it’s been two weeks and Oliver HATES the baby Loki:( Oliver isn’t even trying to have a dominance fight he just darts and bites the baby so hard and scares him and thrashes him around.. so I’ve been letting them see each other and hangout in cages next to each other, they have been swapping bedding and I try to scruff Ollie and I’ll even hold his neck while he and Loki sniff each other but I’m so worried .. Ollie has dominance fights with the other two but it was never this bad :/ I thought it would help him bc when he was depressed over losing Meeko it helped to have Theo.. so I thought this would help him. I’m so worried that Ollie won’t stop trying to hurt/kill Loki.. is there any advice or insight u can give? Thank u so much!!!!

if you go to your nearest ferret rescue center you'll find they will probably have some young (and/or old) ferrets that would rather be homed on their own, I'd try that first because then they are going to be de-sexed and have their injections etc, plus you know it won't be lonely because its already proved that it would rather be alone.

I was wondering. I have 3 ferrets, and I'm getting a 4th one. My female ferret is the dominate ferret, and the new ferret that I'm getting is also female. ( she's younger by a few months. ) How do I know when my dominate female ferret is being too rough? When I introduced my last ferret, she dominated him for 2 days, and then they were pretty fine. But I don't know how much is too much with the new ferret, seeing as how she squeals and hisses quite a lot. Any advice?

Okay so I got a new ferret I have one already and he is about a year and a half and I got him a girlfriend but, this girlfriend has something in the back of her neck. Yesterday I tried to introduce my 6 month male to a younger female. They both came from petco and both desexed, he looked at her and began his attack, he pinned her down and she started to squeal. She is a lot smaller and a bit younger. She's very calm and he's very hyper. It broke my heart to take her back but I was reading the comments and was wondering if there was any hope. Should I buy her again and try again or is it a lost cause?

I already have a male ferret who's been fixed but i just got a female ferret and i wanted to know how i can tell if she's been fixed or not because my mom doesn't want ferret babies.

I saw you have a cat. And I've read cats and ferrets can play well together. Do you have any tips on how to introduce your cats to ferrets? I didn't introduce my first cat to my second cat the right way, and it was a very stressful situation for all of us. I would hate to go through that again and be worried my cat may end up doing serious harm when we do get one

I'm trying to bond my new ferret ( Blaze) with my first ferret(slinky), they are both males, Slinkys 2yrs and Blaze is 3 months. when I let them play together slinky try's to fight blaze (and he does bite pretty hard he bite me once one I was trying to brake up the fight) and blaze just screams and goes potty(he's not fully potty trained). when I first got slinky he was with another ferret and he was fine and when I got blaze he was with another ferret too. so what do I do? Please reply soon thx

I Have one male ferret about 2 years old and i just bought another female ferret about a year and 6 months theyve been together for about 4 days now and Bruce (male ferret) chases her and grabs her by her neck and Zoey(Female) screams really loud. this has been going on since she got home. any suggestions?
