At over five times the cost, what are the advantages of this printer over any of the other LCD based printers that have been out for over two years already? It's the same resolution, same print area, same print speed as Phrozen and Elegoo's $800 printers. Plus, it's locked into Formlabs' ecosystem and (horrible) slicer. Your cheapest resin is over 10 times the cost of most prototyping SLA resins. Whereas for other printers all the settings are openly adjustable, and available for every other printer. Chitu-Box is state of the art, provides a wonderful user experience, valuable features such as hollowing, drain holes, etc, and we can download or create settings for whatever resins we want.

The advantage is the brand and support. Formlabs is the Apple equivalent of an SLA printer. It's a real shame though because I would be willing to lock myself in to the Formlabs ecosystem if it was unambiguously superior but to your point, the much cheaper competition has a lot going for it in almost every metric.

Would love more info on how fine details compare to form 3 series. This really matters for us and the nominal xy resolution has actually gotten worse 😳. 50um instead of 25um on form 3. I realize those numbers are not directly comparable because of changes in the print technology but some kind of quantitative comparison would be nice. There are brief statements on the website that fine feature performance is actually better but what that actually means and how subpixel resolution is achieved is not clear.
@rjakiel73
@rjakiel73 2 месяца назад
Agreed. Not only that but the speed demos were 100um to 160um models. The newer, higher end, resin printers out there for 25% the cost or less are running 30um at 150mm/hr nevermind 50um.
@paulgemperlein626
@paulgemperlein626 2 месяца назад
They say in the Tested review that 25um would have made print times much worse and wasn't worth it. Also seems like they said they'll sell a separate display that enables 25um so that's interesting and Tested also said they have a comparison video in the works.

The more important question is how this compares to a 450 dollar msla printer from China. The laser unit in previous generations was an actual design feature, but this thing is basically giving up and trying to play catch up.

Absolut peinliches Produkt.

Does it have or will it have a quick release build platform? Also are the new tanks consumables regardless of resin or are there some resins where tanks last indefinitely?
@Formlabs
@Formlabs 2 месяца назад
Form 4 introduces the Build Platform Flex with Quick Release Technology for easy print removal, enhancing workflow efficiency. Resin Tanks are built to last and deliver consistent performance for at least 75,000 layers of printing-tank lifetime is now the same for all materials. The tank design has been updated and is no longer degraded by the components present in some of our resins. (No more tank lifetime counter like with Form 3 Tanks)

Are the prints as strong as Form 3 prints? I have used formlabs prints vs display based resin printers before and anything that wasn't locally fused with a laser was significantly weaker layer by layer.
@gizmoguyar
@gizmoguyar 2 месяца назад
LCD based SLA produces much more flexible prints vs laser-based printers (with the same resin). But there should not be any strength issues. If you're having layer strength issues, it suggests you were not giving each layer enough energy to cure fully.

Yes. Our resins have the same mechanical properties (including strength) when printed on Form 3 or Form 4 printers. To make sure part properties are the same, we tune and validate print settings for every material and layer height available on Form 4/B. You can see mechanical properties for our resins by clicking any material on formlabs.com/materials/.

@@dogichowFL I'm concerned that adapting your existing materials library to the new print engine could cause problems. I think embracing mSLA was the right choice and you obviously need to keep resin compatibility but it seems a bit shoehorned and I wonder if there will be weird quirks.

@gizmoguyar
@gizmoguyar 2 месяца назад
@@ipodfernando I've spent most of my career in 3D printer research. The only 4K DLP mirror array that I'm aware of in this price range is only rated for < 1 Watt objective power. This is almost four times that. Additionally I can basically guarantee you that the "4K" DLP projectors that you have seen (maybe used) are pseudo 4K. They are a 2k mirror array that shifts half a pixel to interlace two images. This is super detrimental to 3D printing quality and resolution. If you know of any 405 nm true 4K DLP projectors capable of 4 Watts off-lens optical power, I'd certainly love to hear about it. I'm only aware of two, and they retail for $12,000 and $16,000 respectively.

I'm kind of curious about why the price of 1L clear resin for the Form 4 is $100 while the price of 1L of clear resin for the Form 3 is 50% higher at $150. It feels really weird and almost seems to be a way of trying to force organizations to the Form 4 due to the reduced run cost which isn't exactly customer centric.
@Formlabs
@Formlabs 2 месяца назад
Our new general purpose resins, such as Clear v5, have been reformulated to be optimized for the new Low Force Display print engine that powers the Form 4. During reformulation we were also able to cut costs and pass the savings on to our customers.
@Chaosghoul
@Chaosghoul 2 месяца назад

@cassie_mmk
@cassie_mmk 2 месяца назад
@@Chaosghoulless that and more I’m not understanding what makes the resin for the Form 4 that much cheaper than the resin for the Form 3. Sure there’s changes in the manufacturing process but the process can’t be that different that those changes in manufacturing can’t be used on the resin for the Form 3. Like, given how much cheaper the new process supposedly is, Formlabs would be stupid not to utilize it even if they didn’t lower prices, which gets back to my original point of it not being a customer centric move. Hopefully Formlabs can touch on any actual technical reasons why tomorrow in their webinar.
@Chaosghoul
@Chaosghoul 2 месяца назад
@@cassie_mmk Do you know how expensive it is to re tool for a product you're already producing? Also don't forget that the cartridges are *vastly* more complex for Form 3 than they are for Form 4. Look at the resin pumping system: If you buy the 5L Jugs, you're already getting almost the same price of the V5 resins. If one doesn't like the 1L cartridge price, just get the 5L ones
@cassie_mmk
@cassie_mmk 2 месяца назад
@@Chaosghoul the 5L jugs are $134/L, that is hardly getting almost the same price as the V5 resins. Yes, the V4 cartridges are more complicated than the V5 ones. Even then, they're still injection molded, and I'd have a hard time believing the cost per unit of the cartridges is $5, let alone $50 of the cost of the V4 resin. Though you do bring up a good point about retooling production lines, but something still seems off here because I imagine Formlabs expects to sell resin for the Form 3 for several more years. If that's the case, then they'd be financially stupid to not retool their production lines for the V4 to not get the cost savings and pocket the difference. Though that wouldn't be very customer centric either. Basically, to quote Corey Doctorow, the price difference in resin seems to be a form of "enshittification" to force Form 3 users and businesses onto the Form 4 platform. I am happy to eat my words if Formlabs is able to give a good explanation here.
