Hey Mei Leaf, we have been sparing our Monocle Boss for the past 7 years, and it is aging beautifully. It has become smoother, more buttery, less green and less astringent. It still has little leather feel in the initial brews. The mineral feel has gone. The color of the brew has turned more orange and peachy. Looks like maple syrup. Still as potent. It's great to see a tea age naturally like this. Thought you would like to know. Thank you for sourcing amazing teas ❤

First impression of a Pasha Gushu Raw 2016 sold by Mei Leaf under the name “Monocle Boss Puerh” In this review, I will try to be as honest as possible and clean from suggestions from other reviews and marketing tasting notes (as much as possible) 1. Before even opening the paper rap, a strong small of dried apricots rising from the cake. 2. The presentation is beautiful, with a nice print of the flamingo in the dark library. 3. After moving all over the world, from china to the UK to Germany, the cake is a bit damaged and the paper is full of broken Leaves. The cake itself is beautiful, green, yellow, brown, grey, and white. Smells les of the dried apricot. 4. The smell of the dry leaves in a hot Gaiwan: cooked dried apricot, burned sugar, a hint of see breeze, a feeling of dry nose and leaps like the feeling from the ocean wind, baked raisins from a carrot cake. 5. first infusion (95c): wet leave smell - burned dried apricot, wet charcoals, sweet chicken fat, dry nose, and leaps. Liquid smell: mossy wet wood, dried apricots from an old book. Taste - a bit bitter and smooth, soft texture, dried apricots cooked in chicken fat. Finish - dried apricots and dry/salty mouthfeel. 6. 2nd infusion: wet leaves are rich and full of cooked dried apricot in a boiling chicken fat. Liquid smell more like the ocean and wet wood. Taste: clean bitterness, dry moth not a lot of fruitiness. Burned sugar (not sweet, but bitter). Finish: bitter dry and floral, long lasting finish. The empty cup smells like roosted dark chocolate, roses, and baked apples. 7. 3rd infusion (not as hot but longer): smell: baked dried apricot (more intense this time) taste: very bitter (over powering bitterness) like unripe fruits, very dry mouth. Finish: bitterness dissolve slowly into sweetness (like burned sugar that is also bitter), fresh charry stones (seeds) dryness. Very long finish. 8. 4th infusion (a bit colder and shorter): smell - see breeze and see salt (also in the nose and leaps feel), the dry apricot is not as strong, floral: Jasmin, roses and orchid (the floral note is very gentle and coming up only after the tea has been left in the cup to cool down). Taste - less bitter (shorter brew is better), dry white wine or aged bitter liquor. Smooth texture but tingly sensation (like from unripe apples - no apple taste though) again I feel like I am drinking a sweet chicken fat with over cooked dried apricots. Remind me of an Iraqi dish my mother used to cook. After the tea cooled down a bit a strong woody note rising on the tang, with tannins, vanilla oil, and coconut. Finish - the bitterness dissolve and a sweetness arrive. Again, like sucking on the seeds of over ripe cherries (the combination of woody bitterness with the burned sugar and fruitiness). The feeling of creaminess is rising in the finish, and I feel like I am getting tea drunk. The finish evolves into vanilla oil. The next infusions I will enjoy alone :-) Overall: this tea is special, and it’s not for everybody. The finish is very beautiful, rich, evolving, and everlasting. The taste is bitter and strong. The smell is fruity and salty (in a special way). Other tasting notes: wet tobacco sourness, old leather dryness (for me these tasting notes are not very important when enjoying this tea)

I LOVE that image! Wonderful, Monocle Boss! ART and tea goes together, don't you think? I love you guys and how you work together and support each other in this venture. It adds so much to the overall enjoyment of this process for me. I've been getting trained up on teas. Have tried some of your recommends and they were all what you said. I haven't ordered from you bc I am in Canada but I am working my way around to that. Love this tea! First PuErh that I have tried and enjoyed. You guys totally killed it with that image association. Its like drinking a Boss ass flamingo who's wearing a monocle, smelling of books & colone and I think he's eating oysters. I totally appreciate all the effort you put into this tea experience & enjoyed drinking it with you guys. Peace & Love!

I just tried this tea. It is very interesting. The tingling sensation is definitely present. There is some gentle bitterness and astringency with the first couple of brews, but what I find amazing is how the sweetness remains throughout many brews. The body sensation is interesting. I wouldn't say it was a high-energy rush for me. It does give a slightly stoned effect but is more uplifting at the same time. My body feels relaxed and somewhat numbed. My mood is enhanced and I feel more peaceful. Definitely worth trying.

Great to see that it is a fairly loosely compressed tea cake. That makes it easier for some of us who like to store sheng tea cakes for further ageing. Looking forward to try this one next time I come over to Camden if it is available (in my old age lately I have been slipping up in keeping up with all the teas that come out). By the way I never filter the pouring of pu'er teas.

Celine, I've watched your wrapping video and I still can't make mine look as nice as you do...but I'm glad the doesn't affect the tea and I still LOVE the artwork! Thanks and I love the taster (I ordered 4 because the cake was sold out), that's why one is missing in my collection because I couldn't wait for the full cake to come in to taste it. I'd love to add a couple of pictures to this post but I just cant seem to make that happen. Oh well, I LOVE THIS TEA!!!!!

I'm tasting a PuErh I got from Damann Frères - couldn't be any more different. It is leathery, but it does also remind of seafood and salt water. It is a curious contrast. The color is much darker and caramel-ish. Also, significant astringency and thickness. Just for the fun, I have to point out 16:59 :D Such a great gag.

Are you going to have taster bags available for this tea anytime soon? I can't wait to try it out! Also, the cake is pretty big at 357g, that would last forever (years, if consumed responsibly, or otherwise over two months of gongfu-style daily treats!), would you consider selling smaller packages like 30-50g?

At first I was like 130€ for tea? That's expensive! But then I did the math: 357g / 5g servings = 71 servings Each serving gets 15 infusions a 150ml = 2,25l per serving 71 servings times 2,25l per serving = 160l of tea from the whole cake So 160l / 130€ = Amazing 81 cents per litre of 500 year old gushu ! So for 81 cents I can either get a pisspoor cup of coffee or a whole litre of amazing tea. Guess who's going to order some tea soon ;P

Hi Don and Celine! Started making kombucha and fell into the rabbit hole of whole leaf teas and the wonderful flavors/experiences that go with. I would definitely consider myself a transformed Teahead! Your videos are fantastic, fun to watch and super informative for my nerdy tea seeking. You've done a lot of videos about #PuErh. I recently tried one with a friend (unknown to me, a Teahead!) and the PuErh had a fishy (marine) and leathery character. I was wondering if you guys were planning on talking about PuErh that you dream of and hope to find and PuErh you wouldn't wish on your worst enemies? The best and worse of PuErh? or what to look for when searching? What you might find when looking?

Hi Don/Celine, I have a question, I watched the video but don't know Wether I have missed out this point. say you buy a gushu pu erh. and say it starts to loose it's nice flavours after a year. would you then leave that tea alone for a couple of years or maybe taste it yearly to see if it has improved? I have been watching your videos since 2015, and I am trying to persuade my other half to get me a gongfu guru for my birthday! Don, I love this tea but have you considered the possibility of making a Monocle Boss Pasha Gush Experience boxed gift set like you have had in the past for Tiger Spirit and still have for the Dinosaur box? It truly is a very SPECIAL tea and deserves the chance for it's own Experience set.

Hey Don, I think your video's are fantastic, the production value is spot on. The knowledge and information you share has really opened my eye's to the world of tea. I have just recently started my tea journey "coming from a heavy coffee drinking background" and was wondering if you had any recommendations for good beginner tea's that I could try using the Gongfu method. I have mainly been drinking black tea with milk and would like to explore beyond that. I was also wondering what size Gaiwan you are using in this video. Thanks!!!

Hey Blake, It is always difficult to pick out teas for someone because it all depends on their tastes but I would certainly encourage you to explore Oolongs to get a feel for the variety of flavour in tea. A lot of people start with a light oolong like Alishan Cream (chinalifeweb.com/shop/product/tea-acoc) and I would recommend tasting against a medium Oolong like Royal Peach Orchid (chinalifeweb.com/shop/product/royal_peach_orchid). The gaiwan is 150ml.

have one of them on the way! i hope it is really as incredible as you describe and act. for 100 that would be a really great cake. the unfiltered color already looks very promissing for such a young tea. but guys pls stop taking all my money :D and the artwork of this wrapper would also give a very nice shirt, but the male version pls without the pink :D

the tea reminds me very strong about the young gushu 2015 you selled. is this the same tea just in cake form instead of loose leafs? or is it common for gu shu to taste similar, i wasn't expecting it, no bad thing thou.

love your channel! in the "different ways to make matcha" video what electric kettle do you use? i also noticed there looks to be a water spout connected to it, correct me if I'm wrong I'd love to own one myself!

This kettle is a Kamjove kettle but they are hard to get outside China. It has a water spout to connect to a bottle of water which pumps water into the kettle!

This might actually be worth the 5GBP shipping cost. I just need to convince my teamates to share this tea in taste and price as 300g+ is quite a lot for one person. By the way I have suggestion to make: I would really like to see a video explaining how to properly brew DanCong or atleast how to find out how to properly brew it. I have tried that tea only once and from the five infusions I did two came out as amazing one was okay and two were totally awful to the point that I couln't go back to the tea. Very strange! I don't know if I just got a bad tea or if it's my fault.

It is funny because a lot of people have written similar things about Dancong and I know that Dancong's can become very astringent and bitter if not a great one. What was the flavour/texture that made the Dancong undrinkable exactly?

You already nailed it. The bad infusions were very very bitter and astringent. The bitterness was so intense that I was trying to get it out of my mouth for hours afterwards. Not pleasant. :)

Yep it usually means that the tea was not finished properly (roasting part is so important) and you are tasting a semi Maocha which is what we have to try when selecting tea sometimes. Or it is not very good tea of course.

Not every infusion was like that though which is strange to me. Buying tea is just so hard. You can have the same tea seller both amaze and disappoint you every time you order. I always buy samples of tea before I buy a larger amount. So, good quality DanCong shouldn't be hard to brew is what I got from your answer. I would still love to see a video about this like you did for Da Hong Pao which was a very informative and enjoyable video by the way.

great video as usual but I have 2 question: 1. are you brewing in gaiwan for filming/display reasons or other? Would it be a mistake to use Zisha Yixing pot with raw puerh? ( I just got one!) 2. if I'm not wrong, raw puerh tea is a green tea sun dried and destinate to fermentation right? How come that you need to brew it close to 100C degrees even when is not yet aged? I need to go deeper into puerh knowledge!

1. We brew in Gaiwans for a transparent flavour but you can certainly use a Yixing. 2. The temperature of the water is more about the size of the leaf and the cultivar rather than strictly about tea types. You can use cooler water for a lighter taste but I like to get the full physical experience of a hot brewed raw, young PuErh.

Aging? Would you suggest the same process of breaking up the bing like with Tiger Spirit? Enjoy it now for a year and then store for aging for 10 years?

Don I'm a bit disappointed (bummed, slightly depressed...insert your favorite descriptor here). I got in with enough time to get the Jade restock but I didn't get in for the Monocle Boss (your name you placed upon this new and fascinating sounding tea)! OUCH, I know that you'll continue to try and restock this (SOON I HOPE). What happened? I'm guessing that since you expected this to last for a few weeks that you got REALLY SLAMMED with orders. Oh well, such is life. I've asked to be on the restock email list when you get the next batch in. Good luck, I'm just glad that I did get the Jade as my taster I had before Christmas was well worth the wait for the new cake. THANKS as always for your careful sourcing of your products both tea and tea wares.

Thanks Don, I just checked and only the tasters were available so I now have two orders coming from you probably being boxed at about the same time. I ordered the Jade on Tuesday when I found it was available again and 4 tasters for Monocle today! By the way, at least in the US today is Ground Hog Day and since the little critter saw its shadow, it means we have 6 more weeks of winter! :) sounds like a good reason to drink more hot tea (like I really NEED a reason).

Hey Don! Quick question! Do you let your teas and puerh cakes rest after arrival? Why or why not? Also if you do, how long would you suggest I let a my 100g puerh cakes rest?

We try to leave them about a week although I have not done a proper A/B test on the differences (impossible to do if they arrive in the same shipments). I know other leave them longer to bring the cakes to even temp and humidity.

Hi Don, 2 questions. I know there are probably no hard and fast rules, but with Pu'erh, if I do a 20 odd steeping session, with say 10 grams in my 180 mill teapot, do you know if the caffeine is weighted fairly evenly throughout all of those steeps, or would it come out in the first 5 or so? Not sure if there is data on this anywhere online so thought I'd ask you. Secondly, what is your opinion when people say drinking young raw pu is bad for you? What does your TCM knowledge say about this?

Great questions. I have read some research on caffeine extraction and from my recollection the first 5 infusions are the strongest and then caffeine content drops steadily with the 15th infusion having quite small amounts of caffeine. Don't quote that though because it is a little fuzzy in my mind but I think it is is accurate. Young Raw PuErh is cooling in TCM. Therefore it suits body types that are more hot (Yang type people). For others Young Raw PuErh is too cooling and has a depleting effect on their Zang Fu Stomach and Kidneys - for these people I would recommend drinking Young Raw in moderation and after a fatty meal. Young Shengs are very stimulating and can be overly stimulating for the stomach so drinking on an empty stomach can be too much for some and again I would recommend health fats to line the stomach if this is the case but everyone is different and it is important to listen to your body and observe the effects of the tea.

Usually the looseness of the cake if anything becomes looser rather than tighter with age in our experience.

Hi Don. I really like your videos! :-) But what is the brewing time for this Pu Erh? It looks like you would brew the first few infusions more or less the same time (30 sec). But in your Tea Brewing Chart for Pu Erh you give the brewing times with 5 sec only (with increments of 10 sec). And also the amount of tea (5g for 150 ml) is different than here. This is quite confusing. Could you clarify that please?

Sorry! It is 4-5g per 100ml (we used 7g for this 150ml gaiwan). Brewing time for this one is about 15 seconds plus 5 for each infusion but this is up to personal tastes. In our brewing chart (chinalifeweb.com/guides/the-tea-brewing-chart/) we recommend a starting point of 10 seconds and adding 3 seconds per infusion but every tea and person is different so please play with the parameters yourself too.

Okay, I see now that you have changed the brewing chart, the numbers are different now. It's not a big deal, it only proves that we can play with the brewing times according to personal tastes :-). That's good. But for the Monocle Boss in this video you have brewed the following times in seconds: 10, 40, 37, 30 (feeling high), 37 (sweat, shocking tea, addictive daily treat), 68. So obviously we don't have to be too religious about the brewing times. But I remember in another video (a guide to brewing tea) you have mentioned that one of the big mistakes in brewing tea is over-brewing, brewing it for too long. So how do we know that the brewing time was too long? Is it the bitterness one tastes?

Yeach, I know. I found a set with three yixing cups without that but I didn't find a gong dao bei like that. I've asked because I haven't seen many yixing cups which aren't glazed what made me think if pure yixing cups are worse than porcelain ones

As always it depends on the quality ofthe clay and the fact is that the good clay is most often used for pots and not as often used for cups (of course they do make them though). This is why I am always a bit suspicious of the cups unless it is sold with a high quality pot together.
