A roasted raw Gushu PuErh?! Yes we have never heard of this either! This is a totally unique batch of PuErh that came about after a lot of late night tea drinking.
This is made from Gushu Lao Man E tea trees aged between 400-500 years old and house roasted by Mei Leaf in London.

Lao Man E is well known amongst PuErh lovers as an area producing potent tea with nuanced fruits and sweetness fighting their way through layers of bitterness. Lao Man E PuErh is considered to be a tea that you would only pull out for those who have tasted a LOT of PuErh because it is not an easy drinker.
Many people find Lao Man E PuErh to be crude and overwhelmingly bitter to begin with but Love and Hate are two sides of the same coin and there is something about Lao Man E that keeps you tasting until it captures your enthusiasm. Lao Man E has shifting flavours and complex subtleties that you often have to discover through later infusions - after the bitterness is manageable. The persistant PuErh drinker can grow to adore Lao Man E.
For many, the best way to temper Lao Man E is to age it for several years or longer. This will calm some of the bitterness but the tea will lose some of its youthful fragrances.
So, whilst drinking a particularly potent Lao Man E, we began wondering if roasting the tea may allow us to transform PuErh to maintain its youthful verve and punchy power while reducing the bitterness. After all it works for Oolongs.
We began hunting for young PuErh to play with and found this Gushu Lao Man E. The raw tea was so wonderfully sweet and complex and yet it was masked by persistent bitterness so we bought up the whole batch.
When the tea arrived we began roasting. Needless to say we had to use up a lot of tea to experiment with the parameters but after a few weeks we nailed it - these tea cakes are the result of all this experimentation.
This PuErh has all the punch and strength of the original, raw Lao Man E, but the bitters are rounded and shortened to allow a crescendo of woodsy fruits and starchy sweetness to fill the mouth. The roasting has added a depth of colour and caramel warmth similar to a roasted Oolong. It has tempered the rushiness of young PuErh to leave you feeling high without any jitteriness.
All in all a total success in our eyes. So, whilst it may not be for the purists, we love our 'Psychic Stream Seeker' and highly recommend you pick up this experimental PuErh.

Just tasted this tea. This is definitely a successful experiment and my favourite raw puerh I've tasted. Please roast more puerh teas in the future. :)

I think experimenting with tea is a good thing. After all - it's all about what taste good for us :) That's why people scent them, blend them, roast them and process in all kinds of ways. Keep up the experiments :))

Hey Don! I recently decided to go to a local tea shop here in Texas and picked up a roasted tie guan yin. I decided to do this because the shipping cost and time from UK to USA is expensive and long. I tried the tea and the quality was high and the leaves looked very good as they opened up. The smell of the leaf reminded me so much of baked goods, sadly I have no more of that, but when I tasted it.... let’s just say I will only be purchasing from you. The flavour lacked so much and was so basic compared to your tie guan yins. It goes to show that even if it looks high quality and is high quality, the taste can vary so much. Ahaha anyway it brings up an interest for me to start blind taste with different brands myself.

Just had the Gushu PuErh today in your Camden shop. I have to say that this was not only my first PuErh tea but also the first time I had tea in gongfu style and also the first time when I was tasting the tea from a yixing clay pot. Celine was there and she was so helpful! I could not resist to buy the yixing pot and some PuErh tea to brew at home! Thank you guys, you are amazing and I will surely be visiting you soon! All the best, Mihai!

I'm waiting for the delivery of this tea. I may sound weird, but when I saw it in your shop it made me giggle, because the lama looks like a hippie dude that just tried a funky new "tea" that made him fly on pink-purple clouds (if you know what I mean ). I'm really curious about this guy

We are down to our last couple of cakes in our teahouse and we are sold out in our warehouse. It will not be coming back into stock as this was a limited, single batch roast so if you want to grab the last cake then please email sales-support@meileaf.com and we can try to reserve one for you if possible. I am happy that you enjoyed the Seeker.

I tasted this gem tea along with your video, and I think you are spot on. After many steeps, I find there is also a slight note of cinnamon bark lingering in the mouth. It's quite thick too. For the bitter notes, it reminds me of walnut skin. I agree with the short steeps. I lost counts of the steeps. It's still going strong and revealing more subtle notes. Amazing tea! Cheers!

Great idea! As a peaty whisky lover, roasted tea is right up my street, and I love da hong pao & Dan cong oolongs. The purists may quibble if it's Sheng Puerh, but if it tastes that good, who's arguing!

I really want to encourage what you did! I find your experiment is very interesting and I appreciate your "courage" because you could waste tea if you don't roasted good, right? I also have a too bitter gush and I didn't touch it for a year because of its bitterness but now you show me a way to "save" it! I don't know enough about roasting but I'll try to get a good job only by following my instinct. Nice job guysss

Hi there ... Since you're tea taste tester and drinker , is there significant difference between ordinary chlorinated water, some bottled water and untouched forest mountain spring water and how much does it influence on tea taste and smell, and can you make taste test and video about it?

Did you roast the whole cake? If so, just the outer leaves would really get roasted. You could experiment with different parameters of roasted and unroasted leaves in the gaiwan/pot to alter the taste right in the session itself. Or, of course, you could experiment with compressing individually roasted leaves while processing the tea - I think you've opened up a whole new world of tea to discover there :D

Oh my lord, I am from Denmark, but I am currently living in Australia. So when you mentioned rye bread I was like: "I need to try out this tea ASAP, because I miss rye bread so much right now". The only thing that annoys me is the fact that I also want to test out your upcoming aged puerh...

Also anybody who is upset over trying to roast a puerh to see what it's like better not be drinking any ripe puerh tea either, because ripe was discovered by people screwing around with fermenting the tea different ways! This makes me want to try house roasting some of my extra young sheng. I have some that dried out and went a little sour before I put together a pumidor system, I wonder if this could save them!

+gebriele de Don made a video on this topic named "How to Keep Loose Leaf Tea between Infusions". He recommends to store the leafs dry (i.e. place the leafs on a kitchen towell to let them air dry) in an odourless place.

We agree you should share wisdom of spouse more; different perspectives are always great. She should record as many videos as you do for twice the perspective and production! Take 3-5 minutes per video and talk about the teaware you're using. We don't think (or expect) it all to be for sale but would love the story of the pieces you use each time (if not typical Mei leaf products.) No tea without the teaware! Last: No new anything ever came without experimentation.
