How to read the Qor label: goldenartistcolors.com/resour...
Swatching:
Used a ceramic palette to help with color distribution, since I'm not ready to pan these yet.
Color is immediate and vibrant, quick to combine with water. A little goes a long way, loads of saturated color payoff. I really love the Naples yellow deep- its like a paste buttery gold. The Isoindolinone yellow is nice too- a very warm bright yellow. Most of these colors are very 'clean' to the point where some feel quite synthetic (Benzimidazolone Burnt Orange), but some are also very lovely like the perylene violet and the Ultramarine Pink dark. The Paynes Grey (Violet) would be lovely as a neutral tint or a shadow color.

I am SO GLAD you researched the pigments and surfaced the EPA Warning on perylene!!!! I, too, have respiratory issues and am appalled at the risk to Golden employees to produce them.

Qor does their own lightfastness test and make them fully transparent and public. I remember I had to dive somehow deep into their website. 😊 But the information was so extensive - I was glued hours to screen.

I wonder if Cobalt Violet is a discontinued color, since I couldn't find any info on it on the QoR website and it's in the old packaging. My guess is you were looking for the Cadmium Purple and you did a switcheroo and bought the Cobalt Violet instead. I love the Iso. Yellow and the Disazo Scarlet - such happy colors! Thank you for sharing them with us and the research on the pigments! Daniel Smith's Perylene Violet also doesn't have a warning icon (nether the CL or Prop 65), so I don't think QoR is trying to hide anything from consumers. Your research on PV 29 really brings to light that just because a color doesn't have a warning icon doesn't mean it is non-toxic and harmless.

Yes colbalt violet was discontinued, luckily I had 3 tubes, I love it for mixing. But it wasn't that impressive on its own. Just a few niche things it was good for.

That sounds like what happened! The tubes are sold a bit higher than my head, so I would take a photo of the row and try to grab the tubes. I must've just missed it- I'll have to keep an eye out for it next time I go- it would be interesting to try a Cad Purple!

Very intersting! I have qour neutral tint from a set years ago. I wonder if they changed it.

Watercolor is the only medium, that I know of, at least, where artists have such in-depth discussions about pigments. I'm primarily a watercolorist but I also enjoy pastels, oils and a variety of "mixed media." For me "mixed media" means whatever strikes my fancy (I'm actually a big fan of gel crayons like Gelatos & Marabu art markers.) But thanks for reviewing these new Qor colors. I think I'll pick up at least a few. I love Qor and it's good to see them stepping out more now and expanding their range.

"I will probably mispronounce several of these" - it's the effort that counts!! 😊 Artists are remarkably good at tongue-twisters.

I have a few other brands that I reach for before I grab any of the QoR palettes that I own. That said, I did just buy a quartet of palettes that went on sale before they released these new colors! I combined them so I now can make 2 more QoR speciality palettes! I will use their 24 box set to start with adding some of the new colors. I am thankful for your evaluation in this video, so thank you for sharing this with us! I am wondering about the toxic properties of watercolor paint. I have been made to understand that you should never aerosolize any paints without using a very good mask and ventilation! I use a gravel bucket to dispose of my paint waters. I just let it evaporate and many colors do just go away into the atmosphere or stick to the gravel.

While we all need to know any risks associated with the ingredients in art products we use, I tend to think that Golden is a fairly conscientious and ethically driven company. For instance since we know cobalts and cadmiums have risks associated with them, yet we are told that with reasonable care (limit skin contact, no ingestion or breathing the dust) we should not have any problems. So I would think the pigments you're concerned about should be safe. But really, I'm sure if you contacted Golden, they could give you the information you're seeking to put your mind at ease. When I began using soft pastels last year, I decided to get a desktop hepa air filter to help reduce the very tiny dust particles that would be flying around since I am sensitive to dust and I don't want be breathing anything toxic either. I think the thing to keep in mind is that many of the warnings on product packaging for anything is for the potential or "worst" case that could potentially happen, but not the most likely thing to happen. That's my 2 cents anyway.

The EPA determination was for industrial scale exposure, and those workers should definitely be protected. Unfortunately with the demise of the Chevron ruling, they wont be. Four out of 14 conditions of use do not drive the unreasonable risk, including distribution in commerce; industrial and commercial uses in finished plastic and rubber products for automobile plastics and industrial carpeting; and consumer use in professional-quality watercolor and acrylic artist paint. So that’s why you wont see a warning on your watercolor tubes. Believe me, living in Luling in chemical alley is more dangerous than your minor exposure to a perylene watercolor. However, I will treat them as I do my cadmiums, and dispose of my waste water very carefully

The general thinking around watercolors is that unless you are working with the pigments in powder or aerosol form you don't need to worry as a consumer, but the manufacture is where the issues exist. Don't eat paint, don't put paint in dishes you eat/drink from! 👍

Those 2 browns are my favorite, pbr24 n 25, the naples is basically a clean yellow ochre, but many brands including paul ruebens has them

Honestly, I think we have to remember these are manufactured for adults. Why panic? Just living life is a risk. Part of teaching children any skill is safety, including washing hands. This goes a long way. A warning label is often ignored anyway. If we use our brain and not rely on others for our safety we will be better off. Tfs.
@Nattosoup

I wasn't suggesting panic, but I do think clear labels help people make informed decisions. Years ago, when I reviewed alcohol markers, I received a lot of comments asking me about the smell/thanking me for noting the smell, as many people have sensitive noses and can get dizzy easily. I think if people have smell sensitivities and appreciate a warning, they'll probably appreciate a toxicity warning- especially with the amount of memes RE drinking watercolor water I see floating around on Tiktok & RU-vid.

im not sure where to put this but in five below i saw some a sketchbook with tan and grey paper and i saw some watercolor paper. could you do them in a haul ? id be interested in your thoughts on them. the tan and grey paper seemed smooth and probably nice for pencil and dry stuff and the watercolor paper seemed decently thick for cheap paper. ive never tried them though so i dont know if they are actually good or decent or terrible.
@mjpete27
@mjpete27 7 дней назад
You can always coat a paper with sizing to give your watercolor paint a better surface to “work” on. Most papers are quite thin for wet media, but there are some printmaking paper that is thicker and with the additional element of sizing makes them wonderful for watercolor paintings
