Introducing the KORG opsix mk2 

I think at first people were lukewarm to the OpSix because everyone was like meh, FM. Then folks like Oscillator Sink came along and showed just how deep the sound design possibilities go, because the sound engine basically allows you to create your own semi-modular architecture by linking operators together any way you want. Korg completely reimagined what an 'operator' can be in a way that is pretty innovative and I think underappreciated. The thing is, I love doing sound design on my OpSix, but it's not nearly as hands-on as Korg would have you believe. It's not menu-divey per se, but more like... page switchy. It would be way, WAY more engaging if they used some of that ample panel real estate to provide some dedicated controls for things like envelope ADSR. Or imagine if you could push-click the pots to select each operator instead of using those silly buttons to cycle through them. It's not rocket science, just hire a real UI designer. This could really be an amazing synth if they got the UI right.

The video is shot insanely beautifully. And the synthesizer itself is one of the best fm-synths

I own an original OpSix and never felt like I needed more polyphony. :shrugs:

As someone who's pretty new to synths, perhaps I am too näive, but at least I am happy that they are still working on the smaller Opsix rather than moving completely to the SE. I was blown away by how much flexibility this synth has, I have been able to play pretty much every single song I've needed to play, with the only exception being stuff that requires realistic piano. Since the original Opsix was discontinued I was pretty anxious about whether I'd be able to get a replacement should something happened to my current Opsix, so this puts my mind at ease. At the moment I (personally) don't need things such as aftertouch or a module version, the current keybed works for me (plus they've announced the module version). And yeah, it's true that the price was increased, but personally, with my original Opsix I felt like I paid _too little_ money for what I could get out of the synth.

why isn't the MK1 user upgradable baring in mind they're all based on RaspberryPi's?

Interestingly the Opsix module has 6 operator modes painted on the device whereas the mkII has only the 5 that were on the first edition before the 6th was added to mk I in an update.

I missed the first-gen Opsix when it was out. I'm definitely getting this one. AFAIC, this is a better bet than a used DX7IIFD...

STOP MAKING IT SO HARD TO LOVE YOU. Being a Korg fan is like being in an abusive relationship. You give use this crap and the SE, but give us cool shit like the NTSII at the same time. The Opsix is in my top three favorite synths, and it could have been improved so easily, yet you just add more voices we never asked for. WE WANT AT LEAST BI TIMBRALITY. We want multi stage envelopes like on your older digital synths. We want simple on/off switches for the operators for easier sound design. Fuck any justification for not adding more knobs when you have all that damn panel space. And for the love of all that’s holy, could you give please get the fuck with the times and offer at least a 64 (128 preferably) sequencer on these things?! I love the Opsix so much I actually use it as my master midi board even though it has “baby’s first piano” feeling keys. It’s such a sound design powerhouse hamstrung by no aftertouch, minimal knobs, and again not multi timbral. Please listen to us, not your shareholders.

Silly no aftertouch. With the modules coming it would have been a sweet setup to be able to connect this with the 2 other modules into a single unit, but without aftertouch keys its just dumb when the modules do at.

fine. I have now watched a lot of videos on RU-vid and what strikes me is that there are a lot of malfunctions in your synthesizers. Let's start with the Korg Micro Arranger and it doesn't stop there. screens that don't start up, you name it, I think this is a sad thing. I once wanted to buy a Kronos, but I'm now abandoning that and the rest of your products. very unfortunate, I will also investigate these keyboards and synthesizer further. My question is actually to you, how is it possible that these things break so quickly.......

Get a vst plugin for FM synthesis like Halion 7 with FM Lab, it comes with Yamaha FMX engine and call it a day. FM is digital so no discernable difference between hardware and vst plugins.

I love Opsix, it made me like fm synthesis, the only criticism I have is why still 16 steps sequencer!?

So the envelopes still only have 4 stages? come on...that's a major oversight for my money. Ok 64 voices yeah? well whoopee fucking doo. To rub salt in the wound, if there's ever any valued or interesting firmware updates I bet they're only applicable to the MKII as the MKI is discontinued. So, £700 for 32 unnecessary voices and a slight change in the shade of green used on some parts of the synth. Wonderfull, I'm gonna start saving now.

Devices used by the KORG USB-MIDI Driver need to be registered within the first 10 devices. If the device is not recognized on your computer, follow the FAQ to register the device within 10 MIDI devices. Why is this still an issue, why wont Korg finally fix this... what are you actually doing at Korg?! This is a MAJOR annoyance and has been for years!

You are really the most embarrassing company in the world. And you were never responsible for your products to the buyers and did not make any commitments. The pa1000 keyboard is produced by your company. You presented one of the lowest quality keyboards and materials in this keyboard. What is the real purpose of producing the PA700 keyboard? In my opinion, all musicians should make a video about the shortcomings and shortcomings of your devices and complain to you because of the very poor quality of your devices that you use.

Hard pass for me , don't need another keyboard. A module version yes.
