Introduced in 1928, the Theremin is one of the earliest and most widely known electronic instruments. Played artists that manipulate invisible energy fields around antennas which control the pitch and volume of the sound, Theremin music has distinguished hit records from such diverse artists as The Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Clara Rockmore and Linkin Park.
Today (April 1st), Moog Music designers carrying on the legacy of visionary founder, Robert Moog have announced the first major technical Theremin design advance in over 40 years. The PolyTheremin™ incorporates bleeding edge IsoDirectional Inductive Oscillator Technology, to isolate space around five individual pitch antennas thus enabling each to be played simultaneously (finger-by-finger) without interference from its companion antennas. This revolutionary concept breaks the long held belief that the Theremin could only be monophonic instrument.
The PolyTheremin ships with Dorit Chrysler's instructional video "Playing the PolyTheremin is Even Easier Than Playing a Monophonic Theremin."

Ha ha. Technically impossible the field around the antenna is omnidirectional and quite large and those antennae are awfully close together. Does get one to think what a group of accomplished players might sound like on individual instruments playing different parts.

I developed a polyphonic version of the theremin several years ago, but I used another technology that I named "Super Tonal Uniform Polynomial Interpolation Driver", that worked under a system called "Fully Operational Oscillating Linear Sampler". It is now completely forgotten due to the new "Digital Ultra Musical Boosting System".

Technically I see no problems doing it in hardware. The problem is absence of humans, able to precisely and independently control their fingers in realtime.

If the new Moog has been getting out with two different guitars (the run of the mill Stratocaster-body, and a lap steel), the (very, very) last thing on my mind from them would be an electromechanical piano in the vein of a Rhodes or Wurlitzer.

Well you are an Analog Synthesiser Sine Harmonic Oscillator Lowpass Envelope. I don't think it would be that hard to make a poly theremin though. Not that way though, absolutely not.

Apparently they put a lot of thought into developing this amazing instrument, but not quite as much into naming it. It is a beautiful peace of technology and a very interesting contribution to the world of music, but as for the piece played in this video I still prefer an old fashioned, steel stringed wooden guitar, played by mr. Page of course.

The date at start of video is 4.1.2011 i.e. 4th of Jan 2011 so its not an April fool When using dates start with smallest unit i.e. Days then next biggest unit months then next biggest unit i.e. years. Using Month-Day-Year is daft and would be an April fool in itself

Iso Directional Inductive Oscillator Technology We are Idiots arent we? But if there was a way to make the theremin antenna only sensitive to one direction, ie. directly in front of the antenna. then you could play one note per finger. its cool and could be posible. lol

Jokes aside, it's time there was an actual paradigm shift on the Theremin. No, I don't think the "Theramini" is it, nice toy though it is. (I topped up my savings on the "Theremini" and ended buying a Sub Phatty). Over the years, the Theremin was great for two things; 1950s sci-fi and Portishead albums. First "play" on the "polyphonic", I was so bowled over, I was thrilled at the thought of the Theremin having been dragged out of geekdom and into feasible street. Gullible me, nice trick. Dorit, when telling lies, if you glance to the left more frequently, your body language appears more truthful, they say, and I find. And with all due respect, Dorit, if I ever encounter someone as gorgeous and cerebral as you are, I will immediately a) Respect you as a person Namaste. b) The words "I should be so lucky" and nothing carnal (I am a sapiophile) will flash across my mind. And yes, I was suckered in until I revisited this vid. Don't all of you assholes out there say you got the joke first time. Because some of you are lying.
@geomackisback

Dig a little deeper on the Portishead angle and you'll discover that the therimin was not involved. It was the standard modular rig with an extreme pitch-bend.

@bryceHUHwhat You can indeed achieve directionality of capacitive sensing with a technique known as a "driven shield." NASA uses something similar for sensing in robotic systems. (Google "Capaciflector.") John Vranish at Goddard Space Flight Center invented this concept. While the technique may be applied to a polyphonic theremin (for example, one tone per finger), even Leon Theremin, himself, dismissed the usefulness of such a concept, since he considered such an instrument unplayable.
