The Pilot is a great family SUV with a functional-yet-forgettable driving style like most of its competitors. Unlike the Ridgeline, with which it shares a platform, it doesn't compete with truck-based body-on-frame competitors in ride comfort and driving characteristics. Three-row SUVs are its main rival in America's vehicle market. Many of those are really good, making the Pilot average in dynamics and comfort. Still, its sensible cabin, many trims and drive choices, and utility are great.
Driving the Pilot is mixed. The V6 barks when you press the gas, but acceleration is mediocre. Our Pilot TrailSport test vehicle reached 0-60 mph in 7.8 seconds at Edmunds. The transmission is overcrowded, especially in town. This can also make the Pilot too eager and sensitive to gas pedal inputs when accelerating from a stop. The Pilot has longer emergency stopping distances than normal and smooth braking, but the pedal is mushy and numb.
