I had the good fortune to play on this for 30 minutes in a showroom. The sound was so lush that I was literally walking on air coming out of there.

At the Gurwitz International piano competition last week they had one of these and two Steinway D's. The gold medalist from China chose the Shigeru and it sounded awesome!

I bought a used studio Kawai in 1990 in Phoenix. Over the next 20 years, I dragged it to Florida and back to Arizona. Despite the transitions from dry to humid and back to dry, I've never had a problem with the action or the sound,with the exception that the damper pedal was so stiff, using it made my hip hurt, so it had to be adjusted. Just tune it regularly and keep it away from heat, and it still sounds beautiful as ever.

What an incredible piano! I can only imagine how very wonderful it sounds in person. Congratulations, Kawai on an amazing instrument! I loved the Grieg "Vanished Days" as it is deceptively complex and a perfect piece to examine the middle register as Ivan said.

I think haven't played a single grand piano in my life, neither do i have any memories of hearing one in person, but i've heard a lot of similar high quality recording of other pianos from many different manufactures(steinway, Bösendorfer, Yamaha, Fazioli, Bechstein), and so far, i like Shigeru Kawai the most.

Thank you, Ivan Ilić, your presentation is extraordinary! Thank you so much, through your presentation I found this piece which I had not in my Lyric Pieces collection and will study it. It is truly wonderful and magic, and introspective. And thank you again for your wonderful play! You have given me the conviction that this is the best concert grand I could ever buy if I had the funds for doing so.

Thank you Peter for your kind message. Grieg wrote 66 lyric pieces; many of them have extraordinary communicative power, using simple means (similar to Satie, Debussy, Chopin, and other masters of miniatures). Take a look at the Nocturne as well, it is exceptionally beautiful. If you have the chance to try a Shigeru Kawai near you at a dealer, it's well worth it. Kawai has been kind enough to send me one to try for a year (an SK-3) and it has completely changed the way I hear certain pieces. The story behind how Kawai created the Shigeru 20 years ago is fascinating and I'm hoping to share it in separate videos.

@@IvanCDGvideos True that Ivan. Your playing is a joy to listen, like I can feel your connection with the piano. I recently bought an digital Kawai ES8, and although its a stage piano within 2000$ budget, the SK EX samples in it are marvelous and they are giving so much feedback, as Im sitting in front of the real SK......It even feels better than playing Yamaha baby grand in a studio couple of times. Kawai are putting much effort in their acoustic pianos and digital keyboards, and for a piano enthusiast they should be on the radar definetly.

The SKs all seem to have a nasally sound in the middle ocataves. It is even captures in the samples of the SK EX and SK-5 in my Kawai ES8.
@haelscheirs_haven
@haelscheirs_haven 4 года назад
@@_trismegistus I personally prefer the EX samples which have none of that nasaliness and a very full and deep bass. The Shigeru Kawais I've come across in showrooms weren't as muffled as the SK EX samples, and bizarrely, the SK-5 samples sounded worse than my GL-20 with how I had it voiced, and you can really hear the register break at the G2 in the SK-5 samples.
@SpaghettiKillah
@SpaghettiKillah 4 года назад
You have no idea what you're talking about. Fazioli (very articulated, defined bass) and Bosendorfer (for extension) OWN the bass register. And it's not even close with other manufacturers.
@vijaysundarrajan1785

@@SpaghettiKillah I'd argue the Fazioli isn't as great, but Bosendorfer certainly is the best in the bass section.

@@vijaysundarrajan1785 Try the bass on a Fazioli f308. That, along with the Bösendorfer 290 imperial grand, is the very best bass on a concert grand piano.

how come the middle register gives an idea of the rest of the piano? in fact treble and bass are usually very problematic... the middle is the "ok" part of almost any piano.

@@tomarmstrong1281 that’s a nice memory. To be honest I kind of feel the same way. As beautiful as concert grands are, I kind of gravitate more towards the idea of having a 52” upright flanked by a couple of bookshelves, maybe between two windows looking outside. The idea of a grand seems cumbersome - maybe I’ll feel differently later in life, but I like the tone of uprights just fine.
