I've been waiting for something like this, because PNGTubers aren't as expressive as VTubers, but I don't have a webcam and cartoon VTubers are practically nonexistant. This is like actually amazing!
for real, my character is very cartoony and I've always wanted to V-tuber-like streams because I don't show my face, and V-tubers are too realistic for my character, this is a life saver!
I love the whole Toontuber idea and look over the Vtuber style. The cartoon art style has always been my favorite, especially the golden ages 30's-90's.
I agree, but damn that is a long period of time to count as one "Golden Age". That's practically the entirety of animation's existence only excluding the 2000s (which is funny considering the toontuber Scott uses has a very 2000s aesthetic)
VTubing has never had a required artstyle. Most people who do it use an anime style but definitely not all of us. Plenty of people have gone down a different path over the years
This seems like an upgraded version of what Lythero does on his streams. Not to say this is a bad thing, it’s absolutely amazing! I just couldn’t ignore the deja vu lmao.
yeah. I was kind of eye brow raised when he said invent, because I had the strong feeling that I know I've seen this method before. But it's cool I have friends that will love this tutorial
@@Bolomoto Most likely. I'm not too familiar, but I know Scott and Lythero are atleast acquainted. Either way, its still a cool idea no matter who it's from, and is a nice tutorial
@@Bolomoto regardless of whether lythero did it first, scott streamlined and actually made/spread a replicable process for it himself, so for all intents and purposes it's his thing (in the nebulous sense since he's inherently making it for widespread use and he doesn't gain anything except maybe some notoriety so it's not like it particularly matters one way or another)
I really like this a lot! Not just because it's really cute, but it makes it easier for people who want to make a really good VTuber, but don't know how and don't have the money bc omg VTubers are a lot! Also it allows for young animators practice animation, while also creating a cool Toontuber for videos and streams! Another thing is they feel lively and have lots of personality in their movement compared to Vtubers and PNGtubers. (Vtubers while they track well real person movement, it always felt weird since the model itself isn't real, that's just me, still do love them though. And PNGtubers, well I mean their PNGs you can only do so much) but yeah I'm super excited about this, I hope people start using these because their so fun. There just lil guys!
I honestly would love using the toontuber thing if I ever do get into streaming or just feel like doing certain videos such as reviews much more easily without having to do a face reveal or anything which is great for me... Also it might help me learn how to animate and get better with my artstyles in case I wasn't already attempting that slowly at best.
Same, I was thinking about doing vtubing but couldn’t bring myself to learn live2d, 3d modeling even worse. I like animating for fun and this seems like that perfect middle ground for me to settle in.
I have no desire personally to create a toontuber but I think it is amazing that you did all this work and are happy to share it with others so freely! I frequently lurk on your streams so I knew you had been talking about doing this for a while and your passion and excitement for this project is awesome!
Congrats on creating a new way for faceless content creators to express themselves. I probably won't make a ToonTuber, I am not a content creator. But I like this concept more than a VTuber and PNGTuber for the same reasons you said at the beginning.
As a guy whose kid wants to get into YouTubing, in a world where every single face on the net can get turned into AI porn, this sort of thing is exactly what we needed. Thank you!!
Wow, yeah... that's a dark take that I can't dismiss or argue agenst given where we are now with the available technology. The scary part is the zoom face pattern harvest that many people already let their kids participate with for remote school. But at least if you tell zoom to turn off your camera, it will turn it off and not keep spying on you like your cellphone might still watch where your eyes are on the screen.
@@shanggosteen9804 For sure. I've already "ruined Santa Claus" for her so to speak by letting her know her favorite RU-vidrs are all fake, basically just throwing their parents' money around... I think part of what really sucks kids in is when their parents let them become unsupervised, obsessive fans over these fake personalities and start thinking these rich man-children can do no wrong, lol. You gotta know what your kids are watching, and teach them not to idolize people.
Something to note about the sound filter setup at 5:00 is that it implies that you've set up your mic withing OBS' global sound parameter. If you're a barbarian like me, you will need to add your mic within the sources so you can put the filters on it. Makes sure you go into the advance sound properties and deactivate your mic's track, though, otherwise you might end up with your voice being doubled on your stream.
An amazing concept from an amazing creator. And the bunch of cherries on top of it are the limitless potential of not just customizing to your liking, but trying out variety of drawing styles. Got inspired to give it a try with Pixel arts to see if it can work. You are a legend, Scott, and everyone thanks you for that!
Scott changing up the "on-screen avatar scene" by giving people more variety to work with. congrats on getting this all figured out to begin with without being a programmer. i cant imagine the hurdle this was to want to do something like this and actually get it working like you wanted for the most part. this actually reminds me of a recent thing i saw where somebody was able to make one of those "talking character portraits" like in some RPGs, but that only worked in some rather specific program that i hadnt heard of before.
I hope we see more ToonTubers in the future because it looks infinity better than all the $1 VTuber models you see in those no views poorly made thumbnails. The possibilities with ToonTubers are virtually limitless!
No need to put down others because you don’t like their model; most of the time it’s people making their own. Not everyone is skilled when it comes to art, this also ties into the ToonTubsrs too since you’d have to draw your own as well.
@@Nobodynotable1 “$1 VTuber models you see in those no views poorly made thumbnails” that is putting people down. Vtubers / VTubing isn’t about money, it’s about having fun. It actively encourages creativity so by calling people’s stuff cheap is in fact putting people down. As someone who makes models it is extremely time consuming and complicated; let’s not put down others work in a community about supporting others and having fun :)
Thanks for the tutorial, this seems like an incredibly cool concept! The best thing about making stuff like this public is that it will slowly, but surely, get better for everyone!
Much appreciated tutorial, Scott X3 hope to see more toontubers out there! Its a good way of letting people use their own art assets too and get creative with it.
I've actually had an idea like this in my head for a while: What if png-tubers had animation backing their stills. I originally thought that doing such a thing would take a lot of time and editing, but I'm glad that you used a similar system to vtubers while not copying it all together. Props to you, man!
Very nice! I appreciate this! My friend group has been really looking forward to getting her goblin animated and I've been looking for more style variations for my own Live2D Vtuber as well as "visiting guests" that would show up for specific games. This gives more options for interesting characters to bring on board! I'm excited to get to work
I really love this kind of avatar, from the cartoony style of expressions to the way it's animated just hits all the right buttons. Great work, can't wait to see more of these!
This is some pretty great stuff! Hopefully in the future, this whole process could be streamlined into a single program doing all of this stuff, like how Veadotube mini has a separate program which manages all the tuber stuff, and then OBS simply captures that footage.
I really can't thank you enough for taking the time to make this tutorial! This is something I've wanted to do in the future of my channel, but never knew if it was possible, or even where I could start to find out how. Can't wait to do try this out!
INCREDIBLE stuff! I can definitely see this being yet another option for people to get into streaming, or for current VTubers who might have some games that can’t run while VTube studio is. Good stuff, Scott! I’ll keep my eyes peeled for more info!
Man this is so cool! If only I could draw/animate or had the money to commission! I love how virtual avatars are becoming more and more commonplace and varied, they offer so much creativity and freedom of expression.
This is awesome! I really hope people adapt this because this is a really cool idea, and from watching your streams, it gives off just the effect you’d expect
Caught one of the livestreams where you were testing this and I am SO happy that you are posting this stuff now!! I really want to experiment with this, with a talented artist this could be a huge quality of life improvement on streams!
Excited to try this, I had experimented with PNGtubing but disliked the snapping between poses, stiffness, etc. Thank you for sharing the process and encouraging what will hopefully be a wave of toontubers! It's gonna be awesome to see everyone's hard work on their animations and expressions!
I've been subscribed to Scott for years now, ever since the first Sig and Tessa, and I'm so happy to see how far he's come! I'll do my best to follow this!
This is actually pretty cool. It's pretty much the closest thing I was thinking of when it came to my perfect animated stream avatars. Really the only thing I'd do differently is make it so you can switch emotes by using a webcam instead of just foot pedals and hotkeys. Basically simple head gestures could trigger certain animations. Like moving your head to one side could trigger the "confused" animation, moving your head down could trigger an "angry" animation, and moving your head closer could trigger a "focused" animation. You'd still need a foot pedal for more complicated expressions and animations, and I think it could be possible to implement a "simple" feature like that if someone messes around with how Vtubers code their stuff, but overall this is a great little tool you've made.
hmm, vseeface does have the ability to trigger expressions from your own facial expressions, and the vseeface tracking is open source as openseeface, i wonder if that functionality is also included in openseeface. though using facetracking does mean significantly more cpu usage
@@nidgithm Oh yeah, I didn't think about the cpu usage. Is there a way to simplify it? Like maybe make it closer to the PS2's eye toy, and only track changes in pixels instead of identifying the entire face. It wouldn't be as good, but it could be another option for people with lower-end tech
@@thepuzzlemaster64 i just remembered, the openseeface implementation in vtube studio does indeed have quality levels to lower your cpu usage, so i believe it should have that option yes (I'm guessing VSeeFace has it too but i don't remember) VTube studio also has the ability to do webcam hand tracking which iirc is also from an open source thing, and you can set certain hand gestures to activate hotkeys, so that's also an option. but i don't know which is more cpu intense, the hand tracking or level 1 face tracking. i feel like if you are using the things you mentioned for switching expressions then its going to be really easy to accidentally trigger an expression, so maybe the hand gestures would work better? im not sure how accurate the whole facial expression capture thing is when the quality is lower, i think I've only tried it at the highest quality and that was years ago
I've only recently got into streaming and have already been asked multiple times if I was going to get a Avatar, but nothing really felt like it suited me. Until I saw your Toontuber a few months back. Really appreciate the tutorial. I'm gonna have to find an animator to commission because I think this is the route for me~!
i feel like this can be improved into something that's easier to set up overtime like how veadotube made pngtubing very accessible! toontubing seems to be a very charming middleground between 2d vtubers and pngtubers
Oh boy, this sent me down a rabbit hole of learning some stuff trying to get StreamFX to work, but ultimately I wasn't able to with OBS 29.0.2 even with the file swap that Scott mentions here. I even tried building my own OBS binaries with CMake, but got walled off by all the dependencies. Hoping the updated versions of StreamFX get public releases soon.
This is great! I had an idea to make something like this but I'm restricted due to my full-time job. I'll take notes and see if I can work on the animations. Thank you so much for working on this out and sharing, Scott!
This is very cool. I still have a butch of gifs for all my characters we used to use for videos (till we got Vtuber models) so as this gets more optimized I'll give this a shot! For the channel. I sure as heck can't do this myself. This stuff went way over my head xD. Hopefully a programmer partners with you and makes something like Vtuber studio but for your toon version if you know what I mean. ^^ Very cool stuff!
That video was awesome!!!! Just a reminder that if propper configuration you can use the Advanced Scene Switcher obs plugin that is really complete with lots of functions and I am tweaking it to use with toontubers!! You really inspired me!! PS.: The Scene Switcher plugin can do that too, definitely. The problem is that it has loads of functions and this can be intimidating, but I garantee that it's not complicated at all! Already made a test pngtuber (that can use mp4 and .gifs making it a toontuber) really easily!! If you want to know what I did it was really simple: - downloaded the Scene Switcher plugin, the most recent one - configured it and modified the status `Check conditions every: 50ms` in the plugin settings accessed in the obs - made 2 Macros, one with the condition of `if (Audio) Output Volume of Mic/Aux is above 5%` modify the ""camera (GIF)"" to the talking gif, and the other just the oposite condition to modify the ""camera (GIF)"" to idle And that was it, really simple indeed.
Hopefully this trends really well, so that one day there be someone that can make a software where you can get help animating a toontuber a lot easier.
Really excited to try this! I've been wanting to learn a new skill recently and you put it perfectly: more than a PNG and less smooth/jank smooth than a Live2D/3D model. Thanks for this!!
Thank you SO much for this!! I'll have to see what the overhead is like for my specific computer, but I 100% plan on using this as at least a redemption. If I can get good enough animation done, I may even fully swap! I also know friends who are going to LOVE this, so thank you for this amazing sauce!
Thank you so much! I've been wanting to stream for a while with PNGs but after seeing your short on ToonTubers, I've been wanting to be a ToonTuber!! Thank you!!
I've been wanting to see how you make your ToonTuber, because this seems like it's gonna be perfect for me! People have said this already, but PNGTubers are just... flat images, and VTubers seem a little bit... too much. Plus, I'm already starting to learn digital art, so translating that into ToonTuber making seems great! Plus it means I don't need to commission a modeler to make a Kirby model for VTubing. I don't even know if that's possible! Also, I LOVE how expressive your ToonTuber is. You're really good at what you do, so keep it up!
Ive been wanting to do something exactly like this for when i start streaming, im so glad someone did the heavy lifting of figuring out mostly how to do it so i can work on polishing it out and animating, tysm scott!!
With the exception of obs, I've never used a single program mentioned in this video but it sounds so much more straight forward than learning 2dLive was! Thank you for the tutorial!
I would be mad that recommends refreshed the page when I was clicking on a video, but now I'm glad that it did refresh cause I found you,I love finding new youtubers
It would be nice if Scott added subtitles, as there may be a part of the audience that isn't 100% fluent in English yet, so just listening won't be enough.
Hey! -I'm just leaving this here in hopes of a more in-depth tutorial for people without Stream FX. I found it a bit difficult to understand what type of Sources the two top pages were, as well as the top and peak sources in separate scenes.- Edit: -There also seems to be a change in the Audio Move Filter, as I couldn't find the Threshold action. Instead it replaced with transform, basevalue and factor.- Solved :D Edit: Figured it all out! It was fun seeing the mouth move and it looks like I'm talking through your mouth. Now time to figure out how to keybind without a stream deck, but it will be helpful
@@Starbonsai So basically if you've done the Sammi bit, you should have 3 media sources already. Idle is currently the top one. Make a new source and title it "TOP-PEAK" (or whatever title to differentiate between the one on top and the one on the bottom) and source the PEAK file. Make another new source and title it "TOP-TALKING" (or whatever title), and put it right underneath the COVER-PEAK. It should now look like TOP PEAK TOP TALKING tuber-Idle tuber-peak tuber-talk make sure all the properties in sources have only Loop checked. In your Microphone, go to Filters. This is assuming you have the Audio plugin. You'll make two "Audio Move" filters. Set both of them as Magnitutde. Put the Action as Source Visibility Set the Scene in ToonTuber Source your TOP-PEAK as one filter, and TOP-TALKING as another filter. The Threshold action should be "Enable over and Disable Under" for both filters. You'll need to mess around with both the Easing and the Threshold, but until you get that figured out you're all set!
@@Starbonsai Hi! Yeah I do have a discord, but I'm not comfortable with sharing it just yet. I have figured it out! I just need to figure out the emotes and it should be alright. The other emotes (like crying, angry, surprised) I think are just making difference scenes and key-binding it so that if pushed the keybind, it would switch to that. But it will be very sudden. I'll rewatch the video to see how he did it ^^
God I wish someone who knew what they were doing would remake this tutorial and make it more in depth because i can't even get the examples to work lmfao.
Me and a LOT of others have been so excited for this. Thank you THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!! This will honestly revolutionize video content creation. Thank you so much for giving us this amazing piece of technology.
If you can't add mirror sources, your version of streamfx might not work properly with your version of obs. I have obs 27.0 and the streamfx free stable release. I remember I had the same issue with 26.1 obs and 28 onwards.
damn, created a way to watch someone and get that feeling of quality animation while at the same time being able to experience it in different variations on the fly. amazing
This was really interesting, even for someone who isn't a content creator or anything. It fells like getting a look behind the scenes, very exciting! So thanks for sharing!
