Loved the Barsetshire novels, especially The Last Chronicle of Barset, a wonderful book 😊

I love Phineas Redux - I kept going over it after I read it for the first time - certain passages just stuck with me (Phineas after, wandering the streets of London especially)(which I hope manages to avoid spoilers). The language in some passages is soaring. And I was, when I read it the first time, when I was really exploring Victorian literature seriously for the first time, also becoming a mystery fan, so it fit both interests. Still does.

I do think the middle third of Phineas Redux is fantastic - but I guess I just don't love Phineas that much as a character, and didn't want another book about him! I feel like Phineas Redux undid/spoiled Phineas Finn, if that makes sense? And then the ending frustrated me a little.

I’m loving the warden so plan to carry on reading the barchester chronicles first but will definitely carry on with Anthony Trollope 😊

I read Can You Forgive Her a few months ago but really need to delve into Trollope in the way you suggest. We’ll see how the rest of Victober goes if I can add any Trollope to my TBR.

I’ve read the first 2 and loved them, Phineas Finn especially, but haven’t read any of the Barrsetshire ones yet so thanks for the tip about Doctor Thorne! Ill rearrange my reading order, I just got a nice set of the Palliser ones on sale so started there 😊

I would definitely recommend reading Doctor Thorne before the Prime Minister :)

This is so timing! I'm reading this series now, I just finished Phineas Finn last week, politics are not my favorite subject so I felt a little tired about it in this series. I absolutely love the Barchester Chronicles, and I am liking this series too. I read The way we live now, some years ago and didn't catch the reference in this books, I will put more atention. Thanks for talking about them

Thanks :) The politics isn't my favourite thing about the series, but some of the characters are amazing.

Once again, first rate content. Thanks for the reading tips! I am slowly working through the the Barsetshire Chronicles. _The Warden_ was quite brilliant and subtle.

So far I've only read The Duke's Children (starting with the last one... I know...) but really enjoyed it. It's one of my favorite novel by Trollope so far. I intend to read the whole series, hopefully next year, starting from the beginning. Which is why I'm very much looking forward to your videos :)

I hope you like the series! I can't imagine how it must have been to read The Duke's Children last - you are really going to see some of the characters become themselves over the previous books!

I read the first four Barsetshire novels first, then took the opportunity to read the Palliser novels in entirety with a read along. I have now returned to start The Small House at Allington. I loved the Pallisers, but like you, prefer the Barsetshire ones.

This sucks! But i am so glad that you are doing this series! This was really helpful!!! I think i am going to switch over to the Barsetshire Series, finish that and come back to Palliser.

I really love the Palliser series. I did my 3rd re-read of the series earlier this year. I love that you talked about them in conjunction with the Barsetshire series with regard to spoilers. I read the Palliser series first so when I did eventually read Dr. Thorne I was a tiny bit bummed. Great video! Looking forward to the rest of the week. 😊📚❤

They're such a great series :) I do think it's worth considering the spoilers - there are just so many little connections between his works!

I think when you've read both series enough times, it just feels like visiting friends when the people from Barsetshire show up in the Palliser series. :) I read Barchester Towers first, then most of the Palliser series with Framley Parsonage thrown in, and I think The Warden. That was back in the late 1970's and early 1980's. When I finally read The Small House at Allington and Plantagenet Palliser showed up as a minor comic character, I wondered how Trollope got from that to Can You Forgive Her. He does take minor characters and make them major characters in other novels, but Palliser is remarkable. Trollope considered him to be what he'd be remembered for, felt he lived and breathed. He also named Josiah Crawley as his other best character.
@brettnorris1428

The Barsetshire chronicles are still Trollope's best work, but the fact that these characters inhabit the same world adds depth. Plantagenet Palliser was 100 years ahead of his time in respect of decimal currency.

Hello and thank you for another interesting video. I look forward to your thoughts on The Palliser novels. Just one thing if I may and that is can you please pronounce Phineas Redux correctly? I refer to the Redux part of the title which is pronounced Ree-ducks not re-doo. It comes from the Latin and not the French (as I suspect you may think). Apologies if this offends I certainly don't mean it to. Your channel is one of the brighter, intelligent and more thoughtful places on RU-vid. Many thanks.
@katiejlumsden
@katiejlumsden 4 года назад
Oh, sorry, I didn't realise. I've heard other people pronounce it like I do. I'm afraid my video on Phineas Redux is already filmed so it'll be wrong there too.
@gingerladd6900

My favourite Palliser novel is Phineus Redux, but it was the one I read first, so I don't know if that made a difference. I just love all the drama with the court case, and I found all the Lady Laura stuff very involving. Also Madame Max Goesler is one of my favourite characters and she has a lot to do in it. Also my least favourite is The Duke's Children, mainly because I was hoping it would be like The Last Chronicle of Barset, and it just isn't. Anyway, looking forward to hear what you have to say about the individual novels.
@katiejlumsden
@katiejlumsden 4 года назад
I expect reading Phineas Redux first would make you like it more - one of the reasons why I don't love it is that it kind of invalidates the ending/point of Phineas Finn, if you see what I mean? I loved the Duke's Children, but I do agree - it doesn't bring everything together in way the Last Chronicle does.

The rest of the series is a bit more dramatic and engaging - so I recommend reading on. For quite a lot of people The Warden is their least favourite in the series.

I am reading the Barsetshire Chronicles first and I think you must have recommended this before. So many books and not enough time. I’m currently struggling with Deerbrook, not because of the writing, or story, but because my copy only has tiny print and 241 pages, which is about half the Penguin edition. Did you finish it yet?
@katiejlumsden
@katiejlumsden 4 года назад
No, I'm still only a fifth of the way through Deerbrook. I'm really enjoying it - reading it on kindle, which sounds better than your edition! It's not a short book, that sounds mad!
