I loved Can You Forgive Her? Trollope's description of the various characters makes me curious as to how he'd describe me as a character. A perfect beginning to a series!

Long, long book but I did think it was well done. There's lots of humour in it, I liked how the two separate stories come together near the end. Trollope had a really good eye for detail and satire though. It does do what a lot of the books in this series do though which is a young character who must choose between two suitors, one flashy and adventurous but also insincere, the other duller and plainer but more good in a conventional sense.

I like your enthusiasm. I've never read Anthony Trollope so far, but in Victober I am going to give a try to The Warden.

I read it a few months ago and really enjoyed it! I feel like I need to re-read it, though because there is so much going on. That’s going to be a project for 2020 I think.

Can you forgive her? was the second novel I read of Trollope’s. I can say with confidence, I’m becoming obsessed with Trollope. The writing makes me feel as if I have fallen into the pages to become a fly on the wall soaking in the scenes. Just delicious.

The three plot lines of this book were engaging. I loved Glencora's personality and her dilemma in regards to following her heart or doing what was expected of her. Even though I love how her relationship with Plantagenet developed throughout the series, I like to think that if she had resisted her family's pressure to marry him, she probably would have been successful. I feel that Mrs Greenow didn't need to marry anybody and I think she did it just to have something to do. It was as if she needed "a project" to keep herself entertain.

This was the first Trollope book I ever read. At first, I had trouble forgiving her, but by the end of the novel, I did forgive her and felt badly about my prejudice.

I think I forgave Alice too - and Glencora; I kind of feel like it refers to both of them in a way.

This was actually my least favorite of the Trollope books. I read somewhere that others have nicknamed it "Can You Stand Her" or "Can You Ever Get Through This Book."

I recently read this one and man, did i dislike Alice! I could not empathize with her at all and for some reason persist with the belief that Alice and Grey will be a little unhappy in their marriage. I also was not a fan of Mr Grey. I think he crossed the line and went from romantic to annoying and stalker-ish. (While reading about Mr Grey, i couldn't get rid of the two words "It follows") Glencora is the most lovely character ever! Her and Planty Pally are just incredible! Mrs. Greenow is a wonderfully fascinating character! She is the only one in these three parallel storylines who chooses the "wrong 'un" and yet, i am pretty sure that she will end up being happy, since she goes into it fully prepared and with eyes wide open. I liked this book a lot!!!

Initially I thought Mr Grey seemed perfect (perhaps too perfect!), but the coercive way in which he ultimately seals his engagement with her - "imperious" argument about his right to the engagement followed by him embracing and kissing her as she shrinks away from him - is disturbing. He is arguably just as imperious as George Vavasor, though in a very different way, which makes me wonder whether Alice will find marriage to him stifling and unfulfilling.

The Palliser plotline I do love more than the Alice and Grey plotline, but I actually really like Alice, and found the George Vavasor plotline really dramatic. Mr Grey is complex but I mostly do like him. He's not quite perfect, but I think he doesn't give up because he knows that she does love him, that she has other reasons for breaking it off with him.

@@katiejlumsden I like Alice too and am not convinced that she needs our forgiveness for vacillating between two unsuitable men. I do think that the fear that she will lose her freedom and identity is one of the reasons for Alice's reluctance to marry Mr Grey. Whether she will do so remains open at the end of the novel, though her self-abasement from guilt does not augur well and seems to have made her more timid. While it may be true that she loves him, the way in which he forces her to renew her engagement to him justifies her concerns about marrying him. It demonstrates that he does not treat her as a person capable of making, and entitled to make, her own choices, for good or ill. But this darkness beneath the surface makes the book more interesting that if it just had the uncomplicatedly happy romantic ending that it may seem on the surface to have!
