wow, thank you!!! I am a sophomore student of psychology. I am beginning to like Adler more than Jung and even more than Freud. I understand that we, as future psychotherapists, we need to find the thought school that resonates the most with us, as this could be our future specialisation. Thank you again, very well structured video.

Dear Alexandru, thank you so much for your comment! I couldn't agree more. Every psychotherapy approach has its own way of understanding human nature, methods and important factors in change. I always felt draw the most toward the psychodynamic approach but the world of psychotherapy is so rich and interesting that everyone can find a good match. Ultimately, as psychotherapists we will always design our own special mix drawing from all the different approaches and techniques ;) I wish you all the best for your studies 🍀

What a delightful analogy. I am really enjoying all of your videos on Adler, who is so often overlooked. I have just subscribed to your channel, so this is a generic response to everything I have watched so far. I think (I am a lay person) that Adler has an understanding of human nature which Freud does not. I must admit that I have not read any Jung. Thank you for breaking down Adler's meanings so well. His translations into English are sometimes a little confusing, especially his use of 'horizontal' and 'vertical'. I have heard it said, even by academics, that Adler was obsessed with power. I think that your interpretation (and indeed I think he says so himself) is that a person's idea of self-worth is what motivates them, is more accurate. Thank you also for breaking down the German words. I am an English-speaker and struggle with them. Your spoken English is excellent, by the way. Regards, Bob McGowan.
@PsychodynamicPsychology
@PsychodynamicPsychology 11 месяцев назад
Bob, thank you so much for your comment! Thank you for your kind words, that means a lot. The reason I like to study many different psychodynamic thinkers is because I feel they all add a piece of the puzzle. Adler and Freud saw very different demographics as their patients and certainly their own struggles and upbringing played into the theories they developed (hence maybe why Adler focused that much on power?). I wish you all the best! Alina

These are really nice videos of yours, keep it up! The last years i'm turning more into psychology and these days i wanted to study about Adler's work, so i guess you're helping me in my way to superiority hehe. But I have a question for you (and for mr. Adler haha): You said it's not the environment but our fiction that shapes our strive. What if our fiction is shaped by our society; Have you ever thought about it; Just food for thought hehe
@PsychodynamicPsychology
@PsychodynamicPsychology 2 года назад
Hi 😊 Thanks for your comment! I have indeed thought about it and just recently read about the importance of culture when considering neurosis in Karen Horney's book "The Neurotic Personality of Our Time" (didn't enjoy that book as much as her others btw). She writes, for example: "In fact the cultural conditions not only lend weight and color to the individual experiences but in the last analysis determine their particular form. It is an individual fate, for example, to have a domineering or a "self-sacrificing" mother, but it is only under definite cultural conditions that we find domineering or self-sacrificing mothers, and it is also only because of these existing conditions that such an experience will have an influence on later life" (Introduction, p. viii). According to Adler your fictional goal is supposed to alleviate you from your feeling of inferiority. But of course, also what is considered inferior or superior can vary not just by the individual but also by society/culture. It is important, if not simply interesting, to know how culture could have impacted the way in which you perceive goals to be worthwhile or desirable. But then it's up to you to decide if and how you want to change that in your own life. Best wishes 🍀

Thank you so much for your kind words, Hasan :) I think that for most people Adler always remained in the shadow of Freud and Jung, who accumulated more popularity than Adler ever did. Freud as the founder of psychoanalysis had a huge following from the beginning, and Jung's ideas in particular have gather more interest in the "new-age" community recently. I think the best thing about Adler is also the thing that keeps him from being truly popular: he advocates for taking responsibility. You can't blame it on your parents. Unfortunately - and this is a great detriment to society in my eyes - taking responsibility seems not too popular these days. With victim and cancel culture on the rise it will be harder to engage in a different (and more effective) way of changing your life. Good news is that (at least in Germany) we still have institutes that train future psychotherapists precisely in Adlerian therapy :) So at least this approach and knowledge won't get lost. Best wishes ☘️

It was never about "where we're headed" but where we are and how we can live it fruitfully. In Adlerian psychology, this future you miscommunicated is one's "purpose". Purpose, in this case, is defined as a mean's for an individual to "contribute to others" (I'll assume you're familiar with this) and a well of encouragement. Though this might not be that helpful considering the age of this video as you have most likely developed your knowledge, I hope it communicates some amount of insight.

Since I've heard about Alfred Adler psychology, I started to ask myself why is he so underated if compared with Freud and Jung (both massively known)? Here in Brazil has a lot of psychologists and I never heard of even one who aplies Adler knowledge, most and only Lacan, Jung, Freud, Winnicott...
@PsychodynamicPsychology
@PsychodynamicPsychology Год назад
I've also heard that Brazil seems to have a much more "classical" psychoanalytic scene going. So interesting! I guess that Adler was leaning a lot towards what is now humanistic thinking. Plus, back in the day (and unfortunately still today some) psychoanalysts can be incredibly dogmatic.

@@PsychodynamicPsychology yeah, really unfortunate there are still dogmas inside science. But thanks to people like you, I hope this knowledge gets recognised for it's huge value to our society, specially in this days, I feel like we are thirst for this kind of psychology, which BTW I loved the "perennial" designation.. that's is how it should be, right? I saw other videos too and I think you are doing a great job in pro of mental (and general) health, keep going! : )

On what topic exactly? On Adler I know no other books suitable for beginners. But you might want to try reading Adler's originals, he's much more readable than Freud or Jung.

There is the sequel "The Courage to Be Happy" by the same authors if you prefer a light and fun read. If you're interested in a more academic approach, there is "The Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler - A Systematic Representation In Selections From His Writings" by Ansbacher & Ansbacher.

Great video but if you read and understand Heinz Kohut's psychology of the Self you can be an Adlerian, a Jungian and a Freudian.
@PsychodynamicPsychology
@PsychodynamicPsychology Год назад
What a coicidence, I have started diving into Kohut's thinking actually. I started reading "Restoration of the Self" but he just dives in knee-deep into heavy terminology right away - so I have some secondary reading to do before I can fully appreciate this one. Do you have a good introductory book that you can recommend?
@stuartschneiderman8517
@stuartschneiderman8517 Год назад
@@PsychodynamicPsychology I would recommend you read his earlier 'Analysis of the Self' before reading the Restoration of the Self', this is because he gives more detail about his ideas concerning areas like the vertical and horizontal split. Kohut allows for a Freudian drive structural guilty man view of conflict because he views sexual and aggressive drives as breakdown products of a vulnerable depleted sense of self and self value. He views these drives and their structures as compensatory attempts to shore up a loss of self esteem. To this extent he is quite close to Adler who also views such phenomena as secondary attempts to deal with inferiority. There are a number of good Kohutian books (Kohut wasn't the greatest writer though) My favorites are; Allen M. Siegal 'Heinz Kohut and the Psychology of the Self', Philip F. D. Rubovits-Seitz 'Kohut's Freudian Vision', Miriam Elson Self Psychology in Clinical Social Work', 'Using Self Psychology in Psychotherapy' edited by Helene Jackson' also Kohut's Chicago Institute Lectures are very well edited and were given during the period between 'Analysis of the Self' and 'Restoration of the Self' they are very well edited and quite comprehensible. Just to add it may be best to start with Allen Siegal's book before reading Analysis of the Self since it is the clearest overview of Kohut's thought I know of. ' Keep up the great work.

Wow. Thank you so much! This is an incredibly valuable overview, it's so kind of you to share your extensive knowledge. I deeply appreciate it and now I'm even more excited for my week off next week to have time to properly dive into this. I'll start with Allen Siegal's book then. Thank you again and best wishes.
