04:03 - ET 200SP Base Unit
05:36 - How to Install the ET 200SP Remote I/O Components
08:05 - How to Power up the ET 200SP Remote I/O
10:30 - How to Connect a Sensor to the ET 200SP Base Unit
This video will answer two important questions for you.
First, what is an ET 200SP base unit?
And second, how can you install and use this device in your system?
The base unit is, as the name indicates, a base where you can install the I/O cards.
In order for you to be able to install the I/O cards on the et 200sp, you must first have a base unit installed on the din rail. Once in place, you can install your I/O card.
Let’s examine how to install each component of this ET 200SP remote I/O on the din rail.
With the rail in place, you put the head module on the rail.
Then push in the lower part lightly until you hear a click sound.
The same goes for the base unit. You put it on the rail then push it into the rail. Making sure the device clicks into the rail.
Next, push the base unit to the left to attach it to the head module.
When you hear that click sound, it means that the base unit has been properly connected to the head module.
Now, the base unit can easily communicate data with the head module.
To install the I/O cards or theI/O modules, you simply place the card on the base unit.
Then push it in slightly to hear the click sound.
Now, this card is able to communicate data with the head module through the base unit.
You can install the rest of the cards on the base units in the same way.
To power up the head module, you need to first connect a 24-volt power to the module.
Then to power up the rest of the modules in the unit, you simply take the same two wires and connect them to these terminals of the first base unit.
By doing this, you’ll not only be able to power this module, but you’ll see the power also follows through the rest of the base units on right. And turns on the rest of the modules as well.
Bottom line? You don’t have to connect any wire to these base units. Just connect the power to the first unit and the rest will be taken care of.
Now you may ask, does this work with any other base unit setup as well? In other words, can I simply connect the power to the first one, and then the power flows through to the rest of the modules?
The answer is… no!
The reason the power can flow through from this base unit to the rest on the right is because i’m using a type A0 light-colored base unit here.
While the rest of the base units are type B0 dark-colored.
As with any other module, there are several types of base units.
This module features, for example, type A0, A1, B0, B1, C0, and C1 among several others.
Additionally, some of these types come in both light and dark colors.
As a rule of thumb, light-colored base units are usually installed as the first module after the head module and can pass the power to the rest of the modules on the right.
While the dark-colored base units are usually installed from slot two onward and can receive power from the light-colored base units on the right.
How do the i/o cards receive the signals from the sensors and actuators in the field?
Well, this is where the base unit comes into play again.
To connect the sensors and actuators in the field to the I/O cards on the remote I/O, you take the wire from the sensor, put a wire ferrule on it, and then connect it to the push-in terminals on the base unit. Easy peasy, right?

I used to work for the instrumentation department at a consultant office, where we designed an offshore gas compression plant within a 4-level plattform. We needed to install Remote I/Os to later connect them to the main PLC. The control system arquitecture included such RIOs spreaded everywhere, linked to the main control system through profinet cables. Definetely, RIOs are the best way to interconnect field instrumentation to main control system. Thanks RealPars for sharing such a valuale information.

The key on the back of the replacement AI module faces at 7oclock, where as the old one faces at 4 oclock. Therefore the base plate will not except the new AI due to the key direction. How can I make this compatible? Is the key direction on the base plate interchangeable? Thanks.

Good Video! Can I use the ET200 also completely standalone? Just in terms of functionality do I have any disadvantages compared to a 1500?
@realpars
@realpars 5 лет назад
The ET200SP family of I/O can be used ins a standalone I/O rack, but a separate PLC CPU unit, like an S7-1500 or S7-300 series PLC is still required. The S7-1500 can be used with an integrated ET200MP series I/O subsystem or, with a Profinet or Profibus-DP link, the ET200SP I/O subsystem can be used as a remote I/O solution.

Hello Ehsan Vazirinahad, Thank you for your question. Because I don’t know what application you are working on, I am providing for your review and learning two links below from Siemens, which should have all the information you need with your projects. The first link is the ET-200 SP manual, and the second is software in the cloud that Siemens provides for you to create your hardware project for free. You can also download this information to your computer. You might have to create an account with Siemens for free to use their website on some items they allow you to download. Do we have to download any kind of program into the head module or remote I/O unit? How this remote I/O module is instructed to send and receive data from the main controller?
@realpars
@realpars 4 года назад
No. When you add the ET200SP to the hardware configuration from the hardware catalog, the GSD file for the rack is added to the project. This file tells the CPU how to interpret the data string that is returned from the ET200SP and how to format the commands the CPU sends to the remote I/O head module.

@realpars
@realpars Год назад
Yes, different CPU models allow for differing number of racks/IO cards/IO points. For your CPU, download the CPU documentation from Siemens. For example, the technical specs for an S7-1214C can be found here: support.industry.siemens.com/cs/pd/255094?pdti=td&dl=en&lc=en-WW. The process image table and output image tables are each 1024 bits (1 kB), so this CPU can have up to 1024 inputs and 1024 outputs. There are limitations to the numbers of nodes that are connected (16 for this CPU, so there are limits for each type of remote I/O node that may limit the total number of I/O available. The only limitation connecting switches, servers, PLCs via Profinet is the cable lengths (

Hi.. Thank you for the video explanation. But i have some concern on the architecture of connecting S71500 an ET200SP. Since all the I/O devices are connected to the ET200SP, all the programs should be done on the ET200SP right? Then why do we still need the S71500??
@realpars
@realpars 3 года назад
It depends on the model of the ET200SP system you purchase. There are ET200SP models that include an IM module and can be a Profibus slave node to an S7-1500 or connect to an S7-1500 Profinet master. An example would be an IM 155-6 PN BA, which supplies a typical remote I/O interface using ET200SP modules. There is also a line of ET20)SP CPU"s, which can be programmed as stand-alone PLC and I/O, combined onto the same ET200SP backplane. ET200SP CPU's have small amounts of program memory (150kb - 750kB) as compared to a larger S7-1500 The ET200SP is essentially a smaller and less expensive S7-1500. A typical model number for an ET200SP CPU si S7-1510SP-1 PN.

Hi, Can the dp et 200m be configured with i/o and then programmed without using cpu?
@realpars
@realpars 4 года назад
You can configure the entire system offline including ET200 and the DP network. However, in order to download the configuration, you will need the CPU installed. The ET200M gets is commands from the CPU and you will not be able to monitor I/O without the CPU in place. This is because a DP network requires a master node, which is always the CPU.

Very helpful video. On one white power module how many input output modules can be connected??
@realpars
@realpars 3 года назад
The answer is as many modules as you can add (up to 32 for an ET200SP interface module or 64 for an ET200SP CPU module) and not deplete the power supply. Each module type requires a different amount of current to operate. You would want to add a power module if you need to isolate circuits or use different voltages for the I/O cards (as in separation 24VDC I/O from 120VAC I/O).

Great video In one batch processing plant having 250 I/O can I use ET200SP with S7-1200Cpu? Or S7-1200 1415 with traditional I/O cards will be enough. How many exactly I/O ET1200SP supports? S7-1200 1415 support 8 channel I/o only (DI DO AI AO). Which will be more cost-effective? System has some RTD module as well.

Great question! First, how close are the field sensors and switches from where the PLC is? Many times, the choice of whether to use remote I/O (like ET200SP) or just local I/O depends on the cost of wiring and installation. If your 250 I/O are an average of 100 ft from the PLC, you will need >2500ft of wiring. If you can locate ET200SP "racks" closer to the I/O itself, then there is a substantial cost saving in wiring, conduit, and labor to install these items. As far as the ET200SP is concerned, each ET200SP station can support up to 64 cards. Your S7 PLC model can support up to 8 modules, which indicates you likely will need to use ET200SP I/O to meet your I/O requirements. You can certainly use both. ET200SP is best integrated via Profinet, so you can have many racks of ET200SP located to minimize wiring and installation costs. Both ET200SP and SM12xx modules (used as S7-1200 connected I/O cards) can support the full range of digital and analog signals in your system. I would suggest enlisting the help of a local systems integrator to help you determine the most effective way to proceed.

@@realpars Thank you so much to RealPars for this detail reply ❤ I got really clear picture now Plant I/Os are situated very near to each other not more than 60ft from DCS/PLC room I will combine S7 1200 with ET200SP to get desired no. Of I/O I will use full 8 channel of S7 1200 including RTD and remaining I will include in ET200SP

Can you please tell what is the difference between the two ports 1L+and 2L+ in this CPU power supply?
@realpars
@realpars 4 года назад
These ports allow for 2 separate 24VDC circuits to be wired. 1L+ and 2L+ are both 24VDC sources, so one circuit can be formed with 1L+ (24VDC+) and common, and the second circuit can be formed with 2L+ (also 24VDC+) and common.

The power supply is part of the head module. Power wiring is connected at the lower left of the head module. A separate power module is not required.

Hi.currently we are using ET 200 SP 4ch, 2A, DO card (18nos.) With Profinet IM module. Everything is working fine the only problem is the heating. When all DOs are turn ON the PLC temperature I checked was 45 to 48 deg. C. Is this a normal? Because even with this temperature my operation is working fine. Load on each module is also less than 5A.
@realpars
@realpars 2 года назад
I have heard of this happening before. There may be a number of causes. Is this ET200SP rack in a closed panel? You may need to ventilate or provide internal panel cooling, especially if the power supply feeding the output circuits is also in the panel. I may also be a grounding issue, as electrical noise can be dissipated as heat. Try grounding the DIN rail on which the ET200SP is mounted, and make sure the power supply is properly grounded. Also, insure that there is at least 20mm clearance above and below the ET200SP rack and at least 10mm on each side. Lastly, ensure the power wires to the CPU are at least 14AWG and that there are no loose connections.

@@realpars Thank you for your prompt reply. we kept PLC in close panel with Power supply. actually we are supplying IP65 rated panel due to this fans are not provided for ventilation. 45mm empty space we maintain above and below PLC. Earthing we checked it was 0.85ohm. One more question we saw some residual voltage(6.9V) at the DO card when DO was not forced is because PNP?

@realpars
@realpars 2 года назад
The power module (6ES7138-4CA01-0AA0) has been phased out. It was used in the ET200S product line, which has been replaced by ET200SP, as shown in this video. There is one power module available for the ET200SP (6ES7136-6PA00-0BC0) which is used only if a fail-safe power supply with diagnostics is required.

Can we connect an instrument on the light colored base unit??
@realpars
@realpars 3 года назад
Sure, just place an Analog Input card on the first (light-colored) base unit. The difference in the base units is only in how power is distributed between the modules. Each type of base can take any of the I/O card types.

question. i'm currently working with this ET200SP and i've found a problem, once the digital output is activated it should be just showing a DC voltage, but its not. i dont know why the output also contain an AC voltage, amount is 6 to 9 V AC in measurement .. can someone help me with that?
@realpars
@realpars 3 года назад
It appears that you have mixed DC and AC cards in the same power section. Whatever voltage/power source you are using to power a light-colored (Type A0) base unit, that same voltage will flow to each dark-colored unit to the right. If another Type A0 unit is installed, it creates another power zone with the voltage connected. This allows DC and AC modules to be located on the same rack. But be careful not to mix DC and AC cards in the same section or power DC cards with AC voltage or vice versa.

Any other way to send signals from Remote I/O to PLC in that such distance? how about wireless? what device I can use if i want to make wireless from Remote I/O to PLC?
@realpars
@realpars 5 лет назад
There are a number of ways to send Remote I/O signals over a long distance. Wireless, as you mention, is one, but it will be limited by the quality and number of repeaters and gateways that are part of the mesh network. Another way is fiber optics, which can be run for up to 23km. Another way, that is often used for remote metering sites is cellular or RF signal. How far do you need to send the signals in your system?

Hello, Are the ET200S I/O modules compatible with ET200SP ?
@realpars
@realpars 3 года назад
Yes, but each product is different. The ET200SP product features a processor to which ET200SP I/O cards are attached with backplane connectors to form one "rack". ET200S I/O is distributed I/O with no processor in the "rack", and requires an IM card to join the I/O to a Profinet or ProfiBus network.

You add modules up to the point where the modules use all available power from the power module. Each type of I/O module requires a different amount of power. Typically, this is 12 - 15 modules.
