i get so frustrated by people like that. i get told I'm a piece of crap for being and active nihilist. not a single one of these people could argue against me, just instead made petty insults saying I'm selfish and that i should go kill myself. they hate me for something they don't understand, and they don't even try to understand, while I'm pondering constantly trying to understand them.

It is so amazing to discover that the way I have seen life, all my life is a thing and has a name. For 65 years I have thought of myself as an alien amongst others who all seem to think and behave alike. I have never read philosophy and the people mentioned have just been names I've heard, but knew nothing about. What a revelation

I can completely relate to the poem that Nietzsche wrote at the very end. I've a been a loner most of my life. The masses hate when you are your true self and your a free spirit. They crucify you by ignoring and condemning you. It is so painful yet so great to smell the fresh air on the top of the mountain!!! Maybe that's why I love Nietzsche so much and why I already have half of his works in the last 7 months. My Unconscious mind did it!!!! Or it's an omen!!!

I came to the same conclusions of the existentialist philosophers on my own, but it took me decades of reasoning. I am very comfortable with my own interpretation of existence, and therefore I am happy. The path was not easy, but it's certainly worth travelling.

I'm in the same boat, I've seem to discovered these truths on my own, though I am only 24. I think with the scientific knowledge of our age this is not an uncommon truth.

@xainish
@xainish 9 лет назад
Diogenes Lantern How does a revolt against modern art and what academia had become contradict anything metaphysical? Existentialism, really is just a reaction. Secondly, in MY opinion in philosophy the phrase self-evident should not exist, everything must be qualified. Third, what even is a truth, let alone a metaphysical one? Even the very mathematical axioms underlying the corner stones of logic have been challenged rigorously. Finally, induction itself is not a reliable truth source. Read Descartes meditations and about why he needs God to solve the error of sense data. I am not being pedantic, philosophy exists because all of theses things matter deeply.Existentialism doesn't even make many assertions, so when you say "existentialism is mostly bullshit" it makes me think you don't even understand it on a basic level. You realize its broad blanket term, covering dozens of guys who don't agree on anything, right? It is not a philosophy of value or truth, it is set of humanistic philosophies about coping with the inherent struggles that arise in life on top of it being a criticism of philosophy becoming about minutia, instead of about life. About how philosophy had gotten away from solving human problems and toiling in obscure problems that do not positively impact the human condition. I am sorry, but I don't see a connection in that anywhere to "self-evident metaphysical truths", which by the way I have never seen qualified beyond a shadow of a doubt.

I was on the brink of death...and I've been questioning why did I get a 2nd chance at life...??? When I've been told, extremely few people get up from this... Doctors have told me, because I've had a stroke at a very young age, I run a very high risk of having another one...so I have an very short 'expiry' date (death) than most people...I accepted death a long time ago...I don't know when it is...but until it comes, I will make the best of this 2nd chance... As with all aspects of philosophy, much of this can be argued. Some, educated and aligned with academia, would argue that many of the claims in this video are wrong. I just want to say that by and large, this is a great introduction. For one who is looking to take an educated stand on the issues covered in this video, this is an amazing starting point. I just wanted to comment and say that this is a great way to start your venture into philosophy. One of the most important points of this video is that you cannot sum any of these ideas up in a simple slogan. This video faces the same problems that Sartre's "Existentialism is a Humanism" are met with. It is far too simplified. In the same way this is a problem, it is also a gift. You cannot jump into the complexities of these philosophies, unless you are truly a genius, without this simple grounding.
@gnuPirate
@gnuPirate 11 лет назад
I find a lot of philosophy books dense and intimidating to start upon. I watch these videos, which are secondary sources, or occasionally dip into a philosophy reader, to "give me an overview" and simplified version of a philosopher's ideas, and see if there are any ideas that really grab me about some well known work, before I dive in and commit to a large philosophical work.I am a slow reader. Ultimately, I will interpret works myself, but many secondary interpretations are honest and useful.

how many times do self proclaimed existentialists fail to practice what they preech? look at all the broken homes, fractured societies, corrupt governments, murders, suicides, divorces and self destructive behavior each and every one of us flirts with on the reg. It takes more to truly follow your own spirit than to stop at the belief in life's ultimate meaningless and then perpetuate self defeating trends. Do not have bad faith. in yourself and others. take your hands off the wheel and glide.
@yaboiferret8681
@yaboiferret8681 7 лет назад
Alec Tapia so first off, what do you mean by self proclaimed? If I say I'm Jewish, then I'm Jewish. If I say I'm a nihilist, then I'm a nihilist. You can't take that away from me. Secondly you spelled preach wrong. And finally what the hell are you even talking about ? Are you suggesting that to truly be a existentialist, you have to reject society's norms and rules because they suggest that life has a purpose ? While I believe that life has no meaning, it doesn't change the fact that society has rules. I can't just LIVE like life doesn't have a meaning. This isn't grand theft auto. Even though I believe that life has no meaning I still have to live like there is one. If I didn't I'd end up dead or in prison.
@alectapia1518
@alectapia1518 7 лет назад
No the point is to create one, not follow what society comes up for you. That is a principle of Sartre. "BAD FAITH". All the existentialists are about overcoming nihilism and created a "you". Nihilism isn't the end point in any philosophy. It is only ever, a beginning.

Most people I talk to say that philosophy (or more specifically the existential crisis you may sometimes go through while exploring the questions of the universe) is scary. Although I understand where they're coming from because it can be a little frightening, I find it so fulfilling to search. It's comforting to me because I don't need an answer (in fact I prefer the mystery of it all). I just love the journey it takes you on

I recently became an existentialist and ive never been happier. Sometimes I do go into despair and anguish because im forced to make a decision in my life and I dont know what to do but I always make a choice and accept my fate. I feel free and im finally starting to real passion in my life and realizing that something as simple as painting a beautiful piece of artwork or having passionate sex can make life worth living and makes it meaningful to me. I used to be an alcoholic for 7 years and looking back on it now I was using alcohol to avoid dealing with problems which is essentially avoiding making choices that require action from me. I was living in a delusion and not really dealing with reality and not really feeling anything at all besides self pity and anger. Ive been sober for 7 months and existentialism has helped me live a better life and helped me stay sober. Everyone should be living like this!

to live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffering. If there is a purpose in life at all, there must be a purpose in suffering and in dying. But no man can tell another what this purpose is. Each must find out for himself, and must accept the responsibility that hisanswer prescribes. If he succeeds he will continue to grow in spite of all indignities

Check out our Nietzsche and Nihilism series if you haven't already. More is on the way. If you're interested in reading Nietzsche I'd recommend reading a book about his ideas before reading his works directly. I just finished "Friedrich Nietzsche and the Politics of the Soul: A Study of Heroic Individualism" by Leslie Thiele which was amazing and a great introduction to his key ideas. When you read Nietzsche's actual works in my opinion it doesn't matter which one you start with.

You make some interesting points. When I was talking about nihilism I was talking about existential nihilism (i.e., negating meaning of life), not epistemological nihilism. The point I was trying to make in distinguishing between existentialism and nihilism was that being an existentialist does not necessarily entail being an “existential nihilist”. For example while Nietzsche was an epistemological nihilist his writing seems to strongly suggest he was not an existential nihilist.

Also in terms of existentialism’s “essence” the lecture was more focused on the thought of the first few generations of existentialists (Kierkegaard to Sartre) and the divergence in their thought is quite wide, so I guess I structured it based on Kaufmann’s view of existentialism as “not a philosophy but a label for several different revolts against traditional philosophy”. So I am assuming I characterized it in a less rigid manner than your view of it as a “structural foundation of philosophy”.

The Sartre quote that sticks with me is the we are 'condemned to be free.' This is so beautifully paradoxical. Who doesn't want to be free? But with freedom comes the terrifying responsibility to make all your own choices. If you live your life under the dictates of an all-embracing ideology, whether it is religious, political, cultural, social or whatever, that relieves you of the burden of having to make your own choices and decisions - you can simply do what your belief system dictates. So freedom, paradoxically, entails taking on a massive burden of responsibility. Hence, we are condemned to be free.

Existentialism is sometimes viewed as anti-Christian because of Nietzsche’s, and many of the 20th century existentialists views on religion. However, Kierkegaard and Dostoevsky (who was an atheist for a period of his life) still put forth ideas on the “existential questions” which are extremely influential and can be adopted by an existentialist even if they do not believe in god. Read Dosteovsky's Grand Inquisitor parable and you can see how he could be influential to non-Christians.

On the contrary, the traditionalist school and the perennialist philosophy hold the key to escape the existential nihilism of modernity. Religious fundamentalists are our brothers in the metaphysical war of objective, transcendental, traditional values against the nihilism and organised deviancy of the mob; this great lie of egalitarianism and this organised nihilism of universal suffrage and the organised deviancy of the cult of modernity: the sexual deviant as political entity seeking access to your children under the guise of "anti-bullying" - the gender nihilism and grooming of children; their parents' lost to metaphysical truths that religious people still hold; the folk wisdom and intuitive sense of the common man. These are the traditionalist forces of metaphysical objective truths holding out against the irrational, organised nihilism of postmodernity.

I think that this video did a good job of explaining what existentialism is and the idea of "existence (for humans) before essence". It is a logical consequence of being an atheist (which I am), but also a consequence of not believing in evolution or worse not knowing it. The "essence" of a person is their DNA and the society they are born into. Their inherent character, is their essence, their emotional responses are determined by the DNA, and their interactions with the world around them is existence. Thus I say, rather presumptuously, that Sartre was brilliantly and eruditely wrong. :-)

"What's the meaning of it all?" Existentialist answer: "There is no meaning, you must create meaning." Q: "What is the mind, spirit, will, in me that is doing the creating of meaning?" Existentialist answer: "No idea." Q: "How does that help?" The Existentialists are just kicking the can down the road. The meaning-creating-subject is just as mysterious as any objective meaning offered by religions or philosophies or artists. The question is: Which is more uplifting? Which is more healthy? Which is more joyous? Which is more inspirational? Which is more creative? Which is more life-affirming? Which is more beautiful? Which is more functional? Which leads to more life? A richer lifer life? A brighter life? A better life? We are not born in a vacuum. We are born in a historical context, with concepts and languages and technologies in place. We are born with an over billions of years biological evolutionary past contiguous with our drives and hopes and fears. We are not fully autonomous individuals. We are a link in a chain going back to the very beginning of Creation. Before biological life appeared on the scene. Before even our planet appeared on the scene. And the "essence" of that Creation is the "essence" alive and active in us. We are divine creatures. The LOGOS. The Tao. The Rta. Creator. Creation. Creativity. Align with the functional, the expansive, the wonderful. Learn, improve, grow - that's the meaning of it all. Life is good. Keep it going. Make it better. But we cannot get away with just anything. There is a world we have to adhere to. Will-resistance. Cheers!

Certainly an existentialist can accept science, and most do/did. What many existentialists would reject is something like scientism which is the view that the method of the natural sciences is the superior/only method for humans to gain knowledge of the world. In terms of anarcho-capitalism, while there might be some tenets of existentialism which coincide with it to a degree, the most well-known anarcho-capitalists, people such as Rothbard and Hoppe, are not existentialists.

The problem for the existentialist is, has been and will always be the establishment of a comprehensive philosophy as to what human behavior may be attributed to various genetic, cultural, political, religious, social, tribal, economic and geographical deterministic influences, and to what culpability is attributed to individual freedom. Existentialism is a novel, but ultimately failed proposition. Being deliberately abstruse (eg, sartres' being and nothingness) does nothing to promote philosophical authenticity.

Indeed, the "true believers" in the tradition of radical objective metaphysical systems of Muhammadan monotheism represents a wildcard with Pakistan and Iran and the hyperloonie, hyper-irrational personality deism cult of North Korea may explode out onto the offensive nuclear theatre of the 21st Century in an act of irrational fanaticism. The places the realist in international relations in the existential and the absurd; thus, the geopolitical becomes metaphysical.

Thanks! this has help me understand the views of many I know. I am a Christian and i do strongly believe that existentialism does ultimately lead to nihilism but I had trouble knowing the exact difference between the two!
@stefangebhard7074
@stefangebhard7074 5 лет назад
EnnioSabata I believe it depends upon the direction one goes with existentialism that determines whether one becomes a nihilist or not. Like yourself, I'm a Christian also. I also find the biblical patriarchs as having 'existential' situations that came down between them and God. Especially, during times when no one around them understood what they were dealing with and what they were going through. I wouldn't say they were existentialists 'in-of-themselves', but that their 'existential' situations became pertinent to their circumstances. Abraham was told to sacrifice Issac by the Lord as a test to his faith and obedience until an angel interceded. God spoke to Moses through a burning bush, calling him to liberate the Jewish people from Egypt. Again, a situation between God and the person he was addressing Himself to. Same goes for David, Ezekiel, Jeremiah and Isaiah. The list goes on all the way into the New Testament. Disciples and apostles had their own personal existential moments with the Lord--of which the world would have never understood. Now as far as your concern that existentialism leading to nihilism goes, there is a writer I find to be fascinating that has been a help over the years. His name is Jacques Maritain. He embraces an 'existential intellectualist' approach. Essentially, the worlds of the subjective and objective reality is bridged together by the use of divine revelation founded in the light of God's Holy Word. Practically speaking, faith and reason are not at opposite ends of the spectrum according to this manner. Rather, the two become a single and corresponding reality, established within the same framework of understanding. That explains why Maritain believed that Saint Thomas Aquinas was the first existentialist, in contrast to Kierkegaard--of whom is more popularly known as being the 'father of existentialism' .

Existentialists and nihilists both believe that there is no objective universal meaning in life. But existentialists think one can make their own meaning while nihilists think its pointless. I think nihilism, is very much similar to depression. Any effort towards giving yourself a reason to exist is pointless. I think that is why Nietzsche thought of nihilism as a disease.

Does anyone know how to cope with existential depression? I'm 16 and it's a really big problem because it's consuming my life and thoughts. I no longer feel the need to live anymore because I always question everything that people take for granted. Always thinking of deep philosophical issues that no one seems to regard, and when I try to explain myself people either become confused or react with over exaggerated dismay. If I want to spend my life living freely, its impossible to do so, humans do not enter a world which is inherently structured. But I'm subjugated to live in a world which I can't explore because it violates human made laws that are enforced by a corrupt society. So why must I conform and spend my only life studying things I find no interest in and working a dead end job. I guess I struggle the most with the philosophy of freedom the most, concerning existentialism. Advice?
@popcornman574

+Mila Zie hey, i had a similar problem about a year ago when i was 17. Mine was not so much an issue of freedom but really the fact that I was depressed over trying to find the answers to life's questions and be 100% confident in those answers. My solution may not apply to you, but what I did to get over it was simply give up on caring about what the answer is. Maybe what you need to do is simply give up trying to find what the answer to your problem is and you will be happy.
@drunkenrampage1588
@drunkenrampage1588 8 лет назад
+Mila Zie Sorry for the late reply. I've experience the same depression that you have. Existentialism from one hand is very liberating. No longer do you have to follow a set path of life that does not work best for you. On the other hand, you feel that life is meaningless and everybody you love will eventually pass from this world leaving you completely unmotivated to do anything. My problem was that I simply believed that every single little thing was meaningless when that wasn't the case at all. Just because I didn't believe in following "The American Dream" doesn't mean that I can't take out the good parts of that dream and completely invent a new future for me. Have you considered the possibility that you are simply thinking too much about others? People will ignore you, people will leave you, and people will fight you because of who you are; it is your job to not make anybody happy but make yourself happy. Eventually you will at least one person who you can share your ideas with. Find what you love, get better at it, and realize that you have control over your life. *This way of life is not easy but then again when has something worth doing ever been easy?*

+DrunkenRampage Thank you for this, when I wrote this about a year ago I was in a really bad place. Turns out I have ADD, anxiety and clinical depression; I got diagnosed a month after I had posted when I was kind of going through an existential crisis. It feels odd looking back on it because I'm doing a whole lot better now but I guess it serves as a constructive reminder in a way. "No longer do you have to follow a set path of life that does not work best for you", I thought this was pretty brilliant. I still care a little bit too much about what other people think, although I don't think it affects me on the same level that it used to.

@drunkenrampage1588
@drunkenrampage1588 8 лет назад
Mila Zie It's good to hear that you are doing better than last year. Going back to my "American Dream" sentence, I believe my depression stem from the fact that I wasn't satisfy with my life. I realized the vast amount of divorce rate and came from a broken home so I didn't believe in "marriage". I saw the terrors inflected onto others due to religious beliefs so I didn't believe in "religion". I flunked out of school for being bullied by teachers and students, so I didn't believe in the "education system". Nothing in my life was going right for me and I failed at everything. Eventually this all added up to Nihilism. Then I realized that ideas such as "democracy", "marriage", and the "American Dream", weren't bad belief systems. They had just been taken advantage of and polluted by other people. I like existentialism because I have control in my life. The fact that I can create something out of nothing and find meaning for myself is a powerful feeling.

I think you're correct in pointing out that i have dealt more regidly with these terms. It could be said that i've allowed myself to be drawn in by the semantics. I also agree that Kaufmann's treatment would a practical and sound point to work from. Often, it seems the social context takes over from the more strictly rigorous rational view. Neither, it seems, are insignificant. Together, balance is achieved. It's great how you've been able to break thes topics down so succinctly. Thanks.

On one small point, the problem with allowing people to 'create their own values' is that it is anarchy, and it does not take into account twisted mentalities, which would ruin such a system. A regulated social system creates consequences for actions, promoting and allowing people to live in close proximity, and even, on a higher plane, in cooperation and mutual benefit, which twisted mentalities do not consider, being completely self-centered, and blind to what really affects their well-being (and the well-being of others).

Alfred Schutz, Eric Voegelin, and Felix Kaufmann, were well aware of the work of Husserl as well as much of the existentialists. All three participated in the "Mises Circle" centered around Ludwig von Mises, a primarily influence on Murray Rothbard. Many have explored Austrian Economics and hermeneutics (Gadamer and Ricoeur); Barry Smith explored the ties between the proto-phenomenologists and Austrian Economics; but very little has been explored between Austrian Economics and existentialism.

Sorry - interrupted. The key distinction to be emphasized is that of whether we speak of existentialism as a cultural movement or as a structural foundation in philosphy. As the later, it comes with limitting implications, epistemological and ontological, and by extention psychological. Philosophical nihilism is the natural extension, what is implied rationally without complexity beyond necessity. Absurdism is a reasonable, healthy and popular response, but not the only legitimate one.

My Existentialism is based on three parts which exist, Being, Shell and Environment. The Being is composed of known and unknown senses, the shell is the experience, the learned, and the expression and the environment is the community of the Beings, the Shells, and the interaction and also the Voice of GOD/GODDESS read by Theophylointerpretative means.

Barry Smith, in his books Austrian Philosophy and Austrian Economics: Historical and Philosophical Background, explored connections within the philosophy of values, involving Carl Menger, Eugen Bohm-Bawerk, Friedrich Wieser, Franz Brentano, Alexius Meinong, and Christian Ehrenfels, who together framed the groundwork for later musings of Husserl, Heidegger, et al. Hence phenomenologists and existentialists tend to emphasize choice and generally embrace a subjective theory of value.

The "essense" of life is it's "motor-source" aka "SOUL", that returns to ITS SOURCE upon exiting it's material "vehicles". The goal of life is to acquire "harmony" with that Essense, that is fed by the shared vibration called LOVE and it's many forms, the most overwhelming being that version that lead to reproductive union. Further harmony relates to the sharing of "ideas" or inspirations that lead to beneficial outcomes a la Edison-Tesla for the creation of a better life for the majority. "The meaning of life" is comprised of the materlization of inspired ideas and making sense of nonsense that requires a functional brain structure, as in "thinking outside the box" to use a common expression, and "no man is an island". We're each a copy of Creation with emphasis on "individualism".

Philosophy is a sand castle. From the imagination back to the imagination. With each idea and concept the sand castle gets washed away and built again. In the end we settle on nihilism upon realizing its only a sand castle until the tide sets in. Spirituality is a phenomenon of the individual that gets it energy from the collective. We all have this inclination and in numbers it becomes real for us .The Spiritualist would say essence precedes existence but the self aware logician would beg to differ . The reality is both .Paradoxically meeting the criteria for phenomenon. All contingencies and intentionalities met for the existentialist. Everything applies both to the individual as well as the collective as object to object and subject to subject. So you see why we end up in nihilism.

I went through a similar process a couple years ago (nihilism➡existentialism) . Upon understanding that there is no free will, the concept of hatred has overall broken down for me, to the point that I hold one thing and one thing alone to be the source of all conflict: Ignorance. I came to this conclusion miraculously _prior_ to discovering Socrates's quote "There is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance." Upon asking why enough about every evil, you can see just how true his words are. Sometimes it isn't mere ignorance, but false knowledge or willful ignorance, though his eloquence still rings true. I seek to maximize my happiness, via the most efficient means. What is your purpose, then?

Those who wish to prescribe denial of God due to our existence & all we do left to our own fallible devices, fail to take into account the Fall. We have the essence of God within us but the Fall has fatally cut connection with that life force which is God within us. Existentialism is one of many steps necessary after Christ, inevitable as a process in the path of reconciliation to our original purpose. We are not rational but rather it is imposed upon us from the void left in separation from the Divine. A child-like attempt to walk before we can crawl. Catholicism, and all other denominations are mass movements, necessary in the course of time for the growth of humanity but like that pernicious guest, well over staying its welcome. Lost, mankind crawls inexorably back toward God, the source of all existence. Philosophical movements are cloaks of world views, held tightly to oneself during the cold & bleak times, only to be let loose when the warmth of the Truth gently caresses the soul as it approaches home. Christ is the living embodiment of the Truth necessary for all lost souls, a gift, a reference point so that one can bridge that unbreachable yet infinitesimal gap between man & his Creator. To blame Christ for Christianity is like blaming Nietzsche for those who misinterpreted his words & to attempt to formulate a meaning to our existence without God is like rowing an expanse of water without a boat (of course possible with Christ but not for us alone). I appreciate all these giants of philosophical thought & this age of rationalism. It is necessary & inevitable, yet I can feel in my heart they lack in some way & it is by filling in the gaps I gain insight. I see the necessity of these like bricks that make a wall & see the wall, with all its faults, as an impediment to climb and that which delimits for the purpose of guidance.
