Introduction to FabFilter Pro-MB multiband compressor/expander

Compression (in the case of downward compression which is most common) reduces dynamic range by decreasing the volume of anything above a certain threshold. Downward expansion increases dynamic range by reducing the volume of anything below a certain threshold. There's also upward compression, which increases the volume of anything below the threshold, and upward expansion, which increases the volume of anything above the threshold. This plugin can do all four from the looks of it.

When the frequency drops below the threshold, volume is reduced. This expands the dynamic range by making the lowest volumes lower. Upward expansion is what you said, it expands dynamic range by making the loudest volumes louder.

This is a multiband compressor, use it on the master channel as a mixing tool (like Alloy) and not a mastering tool (like Ozone). One smart thing I use to do is that I use pro MB on the master channel to mix all timbres and get the most out of them, then I export the file when I'm happy, as an audio file. Then I put the audio file back in my DAW and use for example Ozone on the complete mix so I can master the track. A good reason to do this is that you can't mess whith the mixing when the mix has been rendered as an audio file.

FabFilter- can you guys PLEASE get with Propellerhead (Reason) to make plug-ins for their platform?

A compressor in general turns down the loud parts, so you can turn up the overall. it's more complex than that but it allows say a guitar part that's low in one place and high in the other to even out better. It all depends on how much threshold, Ratio and attack, release you give it. It makes drums more punchy and present and bass more thick and able to punch through the mix.

Side chaining a single band using the free mode and slider handles is an excellent way of handling an otherwise tricky step with a single click and drag. Bravo Fab! I assume this be in the Mastering bundle? If so, is this an extra cost for current master bundle owners?

FabFilter Pro-MB Hi. I'm very new to the mixing world and there is something with compression that I don't get. When I apply extreme compression(lowest threshold + range/infinite ration/low attack/low release) to a sound on pro MB, the moment I use the ''Band Level'' gain ( which looks like a ''make-up'' gain) and level the sound back to where it was before the compression, I hear near no difference between the compressed sound and the uncompressed sound. So it makes me feel like the actual compressor doesn't compress...

can someone explain "downward expansion"? so does this mean when the frequency drops BELOW the threshhold, they are expanded (volume increased)? SO therefore uppward expansion would be the opposite? when the frequency goes above a certain threshhold they are increased?

So, is the typical fabfilter modulation matrix available? If so, is it possible to get the compressor to 'pump' via a clock (1/4 note, 1/8 note, etc.) instead of a sidechain. The Vengeance Multi-band sidechain does this, and was thinking about purchasing that, but maybe this is a better option...

The modulation is more of a creative series feature than a "Pro-XX" feature, unfortunately Take a look at Xfer LFOTool if you want clocked sidechaining. It's $100 cheaper than Vengeance Multi-band sidechain, has most of the same features in its current beta (frequency splitting was added recently), plus it can also do panning, filtering, flanging, trancegates, etc. Oh, and no stupid dongle either, which is a major plus IMO.

about the different phase modes. if using pro mb for frequency splitting (soloing one band per track to add different processing to them) , which mode is best? dynamic phase?
