Hi! This time we have a look at modular / eurorack self-playing patches, or generative music! We go over making a clock, trigger and gates. What to do with triggers and gates once you have a nice structure going on. And we also go over how to generate some interesting melodies. Finally we’ll have a look at some structures.
If you haven’t watched my previous video about drones, make sure to check that one as well! In that one we took a look at sound generators and modulators, to get interesting moving sounds going on. That is also very relevant for self-generating patches!

This is one of the best value Patreon packages out there- a bunch of clear, concise, informative videos, with patch sheets. Added value? The use of Doepfer modules. Who hasn’t watched a video, thought “I could make good use of that module”, only to find that it costs £250+…

I have browsed so much of the eurorack space on RU-vid, and it's hard to find a channel that will dive into technical explanations complex patching techniques as opposed to showing off more and more gear that a newbie like me feels like they need due to lacking knowledge on how to make patches with the stuff they already have. Thank you so much for these videos and those clean diagrams you show in them.

Hey, thanks for your thoughts! That's exactly the reason I started making these videos. Have to admit along the way I got tempted to work with some new and fancy stuff, but this year I am back on my old goals, making more content without any of the newest and latest. I feel that is an endless stream! Enjoy your journey, and thanks for watching!

Your videos are amazing, thank you so much for producing these. I am very new to synthesised music and rather than buying modules I’m building them from scratch. This adds even more complexity because not only am I learning how to make these circuits, but I don’t always even know why I need them in the first place. It’s a bit of a ‘chicken and egg’ situation where I need the finished modules to try out so I know what to build. Or… well that’s where your videos come in. My brain often hurts at the end, but in a good way. You pack in so much useful information and so clearly. Incredible. Thanks again :)

Hello James! Thanks for your comment, so nice to read these kind of messages. I did a few very simple 9v circuits at some point, just because I wanted to get a little bit more feeling of what was going on inside of modules. But also quickly decided it is very complex, and would take me to much time to make anything with quality. But I for sure understand the attraction to building yourself! Im glad you get some value out of these videos, I'm happy to make them, and plan to do a lot more! All the best :)

@@MonotrailTechTalk That's cool you played around with some circuits too. It can be good to get an understanding and appreciation of where the sound comes from and how it can be influenced, but for sure it shouldn't get in the way of creating music if that's your main interest. Also I've been playing around with VCV Rack recently which is great for certain things but it's crazy how much better hardware sounds compared to digital when it comes to basic oscillators and subtractive synthesis in general... Great video. The two Doepfer clock dividers are fundamentally different, no? One is a binary divider, the newer one is a musical divider. I don't have either but it'd be cool to see a comparison of both.
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk 3 года назад
Thanks! There are two Doepfer dividers the a160-1, and the a160-2. Both are simple dividers that output gates instead of triggers. The a160-1 only has divide by 2/4/8 etc. The a160-2 also offers divide by 2/3/4/5 etc, and prime number divisions, so its more flexible. However, then theres also the Doepfer a161, wich is not a divider at all, it just takes a clock and then cycles a single high output through 8 steps. The a161 only works when fysically linked to the a160-1 though, and not with the a161-2. Nice and confusing, hope that is what you ment!

Thanks for the video! How do you synchronize the SQ-1 with the Beatstep Pro? I tried to connect the "In sync" of the SQ-1 to a "drum gate" of the Beatstep pro, and I keep having "ghost" triggers.
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk 3 года назад
Yes unfortunately the Korg (also the volca series) respond to a gate / trigger 'off' signal as well as the 'on' signal, thats pretty anoying if you ask me. I I often use a attack decay envelope in between. If you tweek the decay time, you can get a propper sync.

@@MonotrailTechTalk If you use the midi center from Aturia you can change the clock out of your beatstep pro to be Korg clock. This way you can sync up your volca's (and believe also your SQ-1) with the Beatstep pro's clock using the clock out.

Hi! Many thanks for this super clear tutorial. I have a question: I Owe a MI Marbles and was wondering if a clock source (+dividers) and additional quantizers could help our are redundant for generative music? Thx.

Hi Omega, glad to hear you liked it, you're welcome! The end of your question confuses me a bit, so Im not sure. A clock source, dividers and quantizer are intersting for generative music for sure, I mention some functions in the video. The MI Marbles is great as well, can also generate melodies and random voltages, I don't think it can divide, but I have no experience with that module. I think it can do more than the basic modules!

What a great explanation! Thanks a lot! Can you suggest some modules for a newbie "generative drummer system"? I just want a small system with "whom" I can jam. As having your own mad drummer. Someone/something you do not have to program.

Hi there, and thanks :) Hmm, drum module wise id say have a look at the Basimilu Iteritas Alter. A digital very flexible drum voice. But my personal favorite is to work with a sample player. You can load all sortsof sounds into it, single hits, loops, etc, and will keep you sounding goof for decades. When it comes to not programming, or jamming, maybe look into modules that can provide random votlages and triggers :) If you say "mad drummer" to jam with I think a buot a video I made a while ago, just using the 4ms stereo triggered sampler. One side with 10 drum samples, and one side with a merimba kind of sample. Then just used the Korg SQ-1 to sequence both parts: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KfWquEL8hnU.html

Thanks@@MonotrailTechTalk I will have a look at the module you mentioned. I know a sampler might do the job. However, I don't want anything prerecorded, since I want to create everything on the spot. Have a nice day. :)

I'd be happy to, but really like to be able to demo the theory with a module and don't actually have on yet ;) I plan to get or borrow few doepfer modules to explain some more interesting basics.

Good info. What can you do with a modular synth that you can not do with an Arturia Polybrute, Novation Summit, Korg Prologue, Korg Kronos...etc.? Thanks.
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk 6 месяцев назад
Those synths you mention are all poly synths, which is something the modular is bad at. But to me a modular is a customizable toolbox. There are a lot of things those synths can't do. Many most people wont miss, like having fun with custom patched sequencers, switches, quantizers etc. For me the big thing. I can do a full performance with multiple voices, percussion, mixing, FX etc, all in a portable case smaller than any of those synths.

Awesome stuff! One question: did you design those patch animations yourself or did you use a tool for it? Looks kinda nice to document patches and ideas..

Glad to hear you like it! And indeed, design and animate the flow charts myself in Adobe illustrator/animate.

Hmm, not completely sure, but by the sound I'd say I used on of my favorite easy tricks: Running a simple saw wave oscillator through a delay with very short delay times, slightly modulated. Cheers!

I would love a generative modular setup. Or any eurorack setup at all. Lol 😆 Damn is this shit expensive to get into. Not sure if I'm ready to take the plunge
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk 3 года назад
Yeah, unfortunately it really is. I always recommend having a look at the Behringer Neutron, It still offers a lot of patching fun and sounds for a price tag I think is worth it. Or of course have a look at VCV rack. It's a free and actually really good digital modular plugin :) Lot's of fun to be had there, you can easily experiment with great gererative setups! vcvrack.com/

@@MonotrailTechTalk I already have a moog grandmother,.. just bought a Eurorack case tonight because I couldn't resist lol. It only 88hp but hoping to fill it with things to compliment the grandmother and do simple generative stuff with it.
