The radios that Freddie demonstrated are good for repeater linking. I have made several packet digipeaters out of those and they just rock. Good vslue and not hard to repurpose into Ham uses. And GMRS as well.

Me too...Zello preferred. I now have switched to Mumble so that I am in control of server rather than Zello.

i picked up an old xp laptop at a ham fest and turned into a dos machine with serial port for 20 bucks work great on the old radios

I have several Icom IC-FR4000 repeaters that use for GMRS. Would that GMRS live thing work as a controller with my repeaters?

Don't overlook the cooling fan, these radios barely have a heat sink capable of supporting a 5-5-90 duty cycle. Gas bag ham/GMRS use will kill the PA in short order without a good fan. I know lots of hams have a fetish for building repeaters out of old mobile radios, but these compact radios with light duty cycle transmitters are not ideal unless you beef up the cooling and then run it at 5-10 watts max and drive and external PA.

I have my Motorola RSS dos programming software on a bootable flash drive and I boot my Panasonic CF-19 Toughbook computer in dos mode and works well since I have a serial port on the Toughbook, For the Motorola CPS Programming software I use windows XP..

I program my Motorola HT-1000 MT-2000 Handheld and the Motorola GR300 Repeater and a Motorola Maxtrac300 and a Motorola Maratrac with the dos RSS . With the Motorola CPS I program the HT-1250 handheld and with the XTS Saber I program the XTS 3000 VHF and 800 handheld and the Astro Spectra CPS the Astro Spectra VHF and 800 mobiles . I also Have the Astro Portable CPS for the XTS 5000 and XTS1500 800 mhz I also have the Astro Mobile for the XTL 5000 XTL 2500 800, I also have the Mototrbo CPS for my XPR4550 UHF also UHF and the XPR6550 VHF and UHF and the XPR6580 800/900 mhz and the CPS for my Motorola CM300's VHF and UHF and the RSS for the Motorola SM50 .. @@HamRadioCrusader
