Music theory has the weirdest learning curve. It seems so simple with only 12 keys per octave, but the order in which you hear it gives entirely different feelings. Insane how easy it is to sound off key, yet everything can technically be in key.
Really, these modes other than locrian sound in key as long as you’re playing the respective scale for the mode that you are in. This is because our western ears are very familiar with the sounds that the modes of the major scale can bring. Locrian is different, for it has a flat 5, and a half diminished tonic chord does not sound very nice.
I’m 45 years old, have always been heavily into music, I play drums and I play the bass guitar. However, theory is a weak point. What I know simply comes naturally. In order to improve my game, I’m starting to look into reading and theory to become a better player. This video helped me a lot.
Music school, like college. You'll get all the info for cheap at city college and credit, also. Wait'll you get to marimba, lol. Basically, laid out like piano, but more percussive. You can major in drums all you like, but trust me, keyboards make theory easier to see. I'm a drum major, as is a classmate. We're both doing theory and aural skills (singing) on keys. There's lots of older people, though you'll probably be closer to the age of the professors than the students overall. It isn't really an issue.

Actually, The Simpsons is in a Lydian Dominant scale, with a B-flat in the scale as well. Ordinary Lydian has B-natural. Best way to distinguish is Lydian Dominant begins on 4th degree of melodic minor, whereas ordinary Lydian is just a major scale with an augmented 4th
I like to understand the relationship between the modes by placing them in circle of fifths order beginning with Lydian then Ionian, Mixolydian, Dorian, Aeolian, Phrygian and Locrian. Each mode in the sequence differs from the previous by flattening one note. #4->4, 7->b7, 3->b3, 6->b6, 2->b2, 5->b5. In this way they form a kind of continuum from brightest or most major to darkest or most minor. Dorian sits in the middle perfectly balanced and symmetrical.
That's u talking in term of scale playing... But u dont play scale during real piece play.. so those distances keep on changing.. A minor scale sound lil gloomy to u cause we anchor on first note so important are first note changes. But u easily get lost when u play real pieces. Its distance between its pattern notes thats gonna make it sound like what it sounds rather than major or minor. Cause technically major minor has no difference they same scale. So how could they sound different. They sound different cause u play them like that. And those changes get registered in your mind. A trill of CD and DE sound different no matter how long u play it. Unless u break that spell in-between through some means whatever they may. Same way CDE loop or ECD loop will sound different. Or CDEDC .. and EDCDE.. repeats will sound different cause of start notes changes. Though after one repeat u playing same notes in same sequence. So how certain tune or pattern sound doesnt depend that much on scale whether its major or minor but notes pattern themselves I guess. And if u can assume a song can start from any note of a scale... Where is the minor major difference?. I mean as far as natural minor and major scale is concern. Other minors are certainly different than major. I guess if I remember correctly harmonic got minor 3rd distance between 6th and 7th I guess like blues and some other system scales. But then again between 2nd and 4th of major u had minor 3rd difference u c. 😀 And yep...melodic is I guess that has 5 chromatic notes at end. I mean if u add ascending and descending. 😀🙏

North Indian classsical music has 10 modes , which are very similar to these , primarily there were 72 modes prepared using simple mathematics but later pandit bhatkhande dumped 62 of them and said that only 10 are aesthetic . mode is called "thaat" in Indian music . 1. bilawal : similar to ionian e.g., raga bilawal , alhayia bilawal , hansdhwani etc belongs to this mode . 2. kalyan : similar to lydian e.g., raga yaman , suddha kalyan , yaman kalyan etc belongs to this mode. 3. khamaj : similar to mixoydian e.g., raga desh , manjh khamaj , khamaj etc belongs to this mode. 4. kafi : similar to dorian e.g., raga bhimpalasi , kafi , pilu , jaijaiwanti etc belongs to this mode. 5. bhairav : I don't know anything similar to this mode. e.g., raga bhairav , ahir bhairav , jogiya etc belongs to this mode. 6. bhairavi : similar to phrygian. e.g., raga bhairavi , malkauns , bilaskhani todi etc belongs to this mode. 7. purvi (or poorvi) : I don't know anything similar to this mode. e.g., raga poorvi , puriya dhanashree , basant , shree etc belongs to this mode. 8. todi : I don't know anything similar to this mode. e.g., raga todi , gurjari todi , multani etc belongs to this mode. 9. marwa : I don't know anything similar to this mode. e.g., raga marwa , puriya , lalit , sohini etc belongs to this mode. 10. asavari (asawari) : similar to aeolian e.g., raga ashavari , sindhu bhairavi ,darbari kanada etc belongs to this mode. I cannot say any Indian mode similar to locrian though !
I’ve been banging on the piano for 60 years, knowing I am very limited in my understanding. I’ve been sawing away on an accordion for ten years, and love the sounds but find it a mystery. But after watching this video, I can barely express how my mind is drinking in this information about modes. Why have I never heard about this stuff? It’s so basic! I learn so slowly but everything you said and showed registered in my brain and made sense. It really helps that you show the visual, that I hear it, and that you explain it slowly enough that I can process it. This is wonderful. Thank you! I LOVE it! This is like when God gave me the ability to learn a song, and to immediately change it to another key. He showed me the structure and relationships of the chords and melody so I can just shift them to another key. This is going to change my playing.

This is very easy for those who have knowledge in Indian Classical Music (which may be why you keep saying "eastern sound"), as only the names and other few small things are different. I was able to learn this very quickly. Ionian - Thaat Bilawal Dorian - Thaat Kaafi Phrygian - Thaat Bhairavi Lydian - Thaat Kalyan Mixolydian - Thaat Khamaaj Aeolian - Thaat Aasaavari Locrian - ?? (Coudn't figure that one out)
My piano teacher tried to show me this when I was 9 years old. I thought it was stupid and something that I would never need to know. Now that I am in my 30's and discovering jazz, I am dying to know and understand this. Wish I could go back in time and relearn it with EXAMPLES. Hearing their use in popular songs really helps. In Skyfall, it alternates between C Minor (Aeolian) and C Dorian and uses some aspects of the melodic minor. It uses part of the Dorian when an A natural is played in a chord like Fmaj or F7, which normally isn't in the C Minor scale. The chord progression in the verse is Cm - Ab - F7 (From Dorian Mode) - Fm7. The chord progression in the chorus is complicated, but it is Cm - Cm7/Bb - Ab - Abmaj7/G - Fm7 - Ab/Eb - Cmadd9/D - G7 (From Melodic Minor), then the second time around it is Cm - Cm7/Bb - Ab - Abmaj7/G - Fmaj (From Dorian) - F7 (From Dorian) - D7 (From A Mode I Forget) - G7 (From Melodic Minor).
Thank you! I've being taking guitar lessons for two years during the pandemic. I've always been interested in music theory but didn't understand what the modes were. You've explained it perfectly. And what I think I'm gleaning is that it's not just the notes in the key but the starting note as well that determines the sound. What it seems to me is that all the different key signatures in ionian mode also have a second mode by using C as the root note.
I love Aeolian(Good ol minor) a lot. Its probably my favorite. From, the Skyrim theme, to shine on you crazy diamond. It just has that epic vibe to it. But Locrian also has a pretty cool sound to it. I'm all for that dissonance sound.

I've always known Modes have a direct connection to a major scale. I just needed a simple formula to help me memorize it all. This is it!!! PERFECTLY concise. I find there are so many different ways to explain the modes, some people just don't understand certain explanations of them, and other people only understand the others. The way I taught it here is the way I first understood it and I'm glad it's helped you out as well :)
Thank you so much for this information. The main thing I was able to understand is that essentially the modes are the scales of another key that represents that position number in the key you are playing in. You said we should not try to remember them that way but looking at them that way is what makes me remember them. Also another problem I had was trying to remember the names of all of these particular modes so I came up with my own word ID-PLY-MALO (Ionia Dorian Phrygian LYdian Mixolydian Aeolian LOcrian). This should be THE go to video for modes. I have seen so many other people stumble all over the place, particularly guitarists, trying to explain something really hard, but just ending up confusing people in the comments. The answer (of course) is to sit someone down at a keyboard. The WHITE NOTES the white notes the white notes - That’s it. Every interval and scale can be worked out from the white notes. Presented, in the clearest style I have ever seen. Bloody well done! C Ionian D Dorian E Phrygian that’s the way to do it. Now all that’s needed is a decent mnemonic - I have one but it’s really stupid. IAN opened the DOOR of the FRIDGE, LYDIA MIXED it up and I’LL LOCK it. Rubbish eh?
Okay if u wanna play modes like boss says. What u need to know is in which scale certain note falls at certain position. Or actually u have to go back same interval distance. i.e. M2, M3 P4, P5, M6, M7 etc. Simply distances at which major scale notes fall... Right?... Now everybody has his/her own way of getting to that. But for newbie I tell a easier method till u haven't mastered the keyboard mentally. Just as you see a octave is basically divided into two blocks. 2 black note block and 3 black notes block. Just link the black notes of one block with white notes of other block & vice versa. So u will get 2 cross linked chain across whole keyboard... Right? ..In which notes are tone distance apart. So lets say u have to play phrygian mode from some note. Lets say Ab note. Just walk back 3 notes in the chain that will be Ab F# & E I guess since chain is criss cross linked. These are 3 scales in which Ab falls in that note position .. so just play E. Now if u go forward in chain u get first 3 notes of a major scale. Now for 4th u have to step up a semitone distance and count rest 4 notes from other chain like for E scale they are E, F#, Ab, step up semitone - A B C# D# . They the scale notes of E major scale. Same way u reverse the process for finding scales in which a particular note fall. As for Ab ..those scales are. Ab, F#, E step down a semitone count 4 notes- Eb Db, B, A ..and they the scales on which E falls and in that order. 😀 And obviously it means any note falls in 7 & only 7 scales. Now as one more example lets say we have to play a mixolydian mode from F# key. Count back 3 in chain ... F# E D... Now go back a semitone. i.e. to Db count rest 4 notes from that chain. Which are Db, B A & G. As u see at 5th it was B note ... So just play B from F#. Now if u wanna play like other method. What key is at mixolydian position in C scale. Its G note right?. Now what black notes it got?.. just one at 7th position. So just suppress 7th note of F# scale ..and u will see it B scale now. 😀 F# and B scale has just 1 note difference... Right that is F & E in case of B scale. Simple.. cya guys bye. So null set whether u go back in chain and play that scale from this note. Or play this very scale from its that note position both are mixolydian modes. Like whether u play B scale from F# note or F# scale from its 5th note i.e. C# note. Both are mixolydian.. only whose mixolydian ...u decide. But boss say its when u play B scale from F# then its F# mixolydian. I agree but lets then call it mixolydian mode from that key not of that scale. Anyway agar aap nahin manoge toh main koi case thodi karunga aap pe... Aap ki cheez hai jo marzi kaho. 😂🙏

This corresponds to the Indian classical music system, where any note can get started as the root note, and then the next set of 12 keys define the melody or Raaga.
Thank you so much for this. My piano teacher was good, and while she taught me to read music, scales, circle of fifths… and drummed into me (no pun intended) the necessity of proper fingering (while keeping fingers in position), she never taught me any of the more advanced theory like modes. I'm trying to teach my kids and this is incredibly helpful. If I might add a suggestion and if it's not too difficult, could you perhaps add fingering notation on the basic notation you already show (thank you thank you thank you!) to further assist? Having learned it's a no-brainer, but for those starting out, it's hard to know when and where to nearly break your thumb in crossover & conversion. It's necessary for the notes three measures down the line but often uncomfortable when it needs to be done, but the earlier learned, the better and easier it is. *Edit* -- You're right up there with Rick Beato and David Bennet, but in a different and VERY helpful direction which helps me to help teach others. Please never stop being so awesome. I'm bingeing on your videos; you bring a hell of a lot to the party. Please let me know if there's anything I might be able to do (research, script editing, etc.) to help you.
This video definitely explained the modes in a way I actually _get_ more than other videos I've seen on it. Just the first part alone, where you showed that merely by playing the same white notes only but going down a starting note each time, was clearer than other things I've seen. It was at that point I had to put a like on it. :)

In Indian classical these modes are called Thaats. Total Thaats are there. They are known as Bilawal, Kalyan, khamaj, Kaafi and all.In Karnataka (South India) total 72 modes are there.
In indian classical music we have 10 modes. Its really interesting! Coz I learned it in such easy way because I could relate the same I have learnt . Thankyou so much . I'm new to western music and can yet see too much similarities. Very nice explanation 👌
They are not modes man .. they called thaats! 😂 ... Modes suppose to set different moods.. and there are ragas for that purpose in your system I guess. Thaats are kinda basic scales. U got 10 .. South Indians got 72 I guess. And even among them 6 are just like major scales... Except 4 ..i.e. bharav, marwa, purvi & thodi.. No? 😀 Anyway for moods or modes u need to learn particular ragas of your system I guess. But I may be wrong cause dunno much about music. But that is my guess. 😀🙏

Then I think Ab is 2 whole tones below ..which makes C C Phrygian come from Ab major scale . Ab Bb C Db Eb F G Ab .. C Phrygian C Db Eb F G Ab Bb C. Next s shown on the video ... C Lydian ..C D E F# G A B C.. Next C Mixolydian .. C is the fifth of some scale. F G A Bb C D E F. fits so C Mixolydian. C D E F G A Bb C. Scale degrees 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7 8. As shown in video ..it has the Dominant C7. A good way to find C AOLIAN or C natural minor . C D Eb F G Ab Bb C .As time goes on..we can see 3 flats Eb Ab Bb.. That is from the Eb major scale C is the 6th scale degree of Eb..Eb F G Ab Bb.(C).. This may be helpful. I did not do C Locrian..C is the 7th mode of some scale . C is the 7th note of what scale. Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb C Db.. So C through C using the notes of Db. C Db Eb....... C Db.
