Schubert based the theme of the second movement of his Piano Trio no. 2 on the Swedish song 'Se Solen Sjunker'.
The song became famous as the inspiration for the second movement (Andante con moto) and parts of the fourth movement of Franz Schubert's Piano Trio No 2. The slow second movement in C minor has a melody that Schubert's friend Leopold von Sonnleithner later described as that of a Swedish folk song. Schubert had heard the song in early November 1827 at the Fröhlich sisters' home when it was performed there by Swedish tenor Isak Albert Berg. It was only in 1978, after extensive musicological research, that the song could be identified as Se solen sjunker; it was previously assumed that Schubert had simply adopted the song for the trio, but it has now been shown that he rather adapted and expanded it.
