In this Film Courage video interview, Acting Coach and Specialist in the application of the Alexander Technique Jean-Louis Rodrigue shares how he was introduced to the Alexander Technique by his teacher Sonia Moore in 1969, who invited an Alexander Technique teacher to their class. Initially expecting something related to Alexander the Great, Jean-Louis was surprised when a small woman began teaching them to move and be aware of their bodies. When she placed her hands on his neck, he experienced a profound unlocking of breath, which had a significant impact on his life. The Alexander Technique, a form of psychophysical re-education, focuses on improving self-awareness and using oneself more effectively.
Jean-Louis Rodrigue is an internationally recognized acting coach, movement director, and specialist in the application of the Alexander Technique to film, theater and television. In film, he coached actors and collaborated with directors in Passion Fish, Vice, J. Edgar, Life of Pi, W., I, Tonya, and many more. In theater, he collaborated with director Larry Moss and former NFL player Bo Eason in his play Runt of the Litter and playwright Pamela Gien in her Obie- and Drama Desk- award-winning one-person play, The Syringa Tree, both in New York and internationally. Jean-Louis has worked on- and off-Broadway and at major performing arts institutions such as Berlin International Film Festival, Cirque du Soleil, Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute, Getty Villa, Geffen Playhouse, Royal National Theatre, Piccolo Teatro di Milano, Verbier Festival, Royal Shakespeare Company. For the past 34 years, Jean-Louis has taught at the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television and the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. Jean-Louis lives in Los Angeles with his husband, Kristof Konrad.

Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/425k5rG
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/3WEuz0k
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv

Have you tried The Alexander Technique? Has it helped you as a performer (actor, musician, dancer, etc.)?

We were always told to stand up straight and project to the back of the room.

tried it in college in a theatre group. I was very tense and had the teacher work with me, it felt like I had a massage! It was some 15 years ago but I still have that recollection.

@albertabramson3157 Just like Jean-Louis, my journey with the Alexander Technique began in college back in 2002, and the impact has been profound. Since then, I've been on a continuous journey of study and self-discovery. Beyond its benefits for my acting, this practice, much like Jean-Louis's experience, has reshaped the trajectory of my life. Today, I share my passion by teaching actors, singers, musicians, and anyone eager to acquire skills that empower them to enhance their well-being. My mission is to guide individuals on a path where they can not only feel better physically but also tap into a transformative journey of self-improvement. I say, at the very least, it can't hurt to give it a try! ☺

I love Jean-Louis' book, Back to the Body. It is the best book on the Alexander Technique, especially for actors. What a great interview.

Yes! And my teacher i just found out studied under your guest! It helped me as a dancer to learn how to move with less tension and pain. And how to observe my habits and unwind them to allow me to move freely. Amazing stuff.

I have scoliosis. I really need to deep dive into this subject.

Sorry to hear this. Is this the first time you have heard of the Alexander Technique?
@MorganRysdonCenterStudio

Certainly! Scoliosis can indeed be a challenging condition, and the Alexander Technique offers a unique and beneficial approach to support individuals dealing with it. The Alexander Technique focuses on improving overall posture, body awareness, and movement patterns. For individuals with scoliosis, this can be particularly valuable.

Great interview. Any chance of a Howard Fine interview sometime? I think he's brilliant.

Even though she herself unfortunately past away recently, you might want to look into instructors of Kristin Linklater’s Voice training techniques. Highly regarded work and given flowers by Brian Cox in his autobiography as being transformative to his overall technique.

Kristin Linklater's book 'Freeing the Natural Voice' is a must-read! Great recommendation!

I'd like to see an interview with some who hits the mark and says the line as a contrast to the more elaborate techniques.

Thank you for the heads up! It looks like this is a RU-vid problem and they are working on it. Sorry for the inconvenience. Hopefully they will have it back up and running soon!

Perhaps this advice is good for writing action. "He walked to the table" is boring. "He stepped quietly to the table" is better. Give your character some grace, or boldness, or mystery.
