Great summary of the Lore! Extra points for making it in such a way that this is a timeless video and relevant no matter when someone starts guild wars 2.
I sadly wasn't fortunate enough to discover guild wars 1 when it came out. I try to play it now but I feel so sad that I missed out on this experience. But even tho I didn't see the fall of Ascalon when it happened, I still get the feeling that I was when I hear the soundtrack of Ascalon in Guild Wars 2 and see the broken walls. Thank you for making this video, it was really fun to listen to. The lore of Guild Wars is so fascinating and inspiring. Like thanks to guild wars 2 I started to work on my own world with many races, inspired by the folks of Guild Wars But I could listen to the lore and stories of Guild Wars for hours! :D
This is exactly what I was looking for as a new player of Guild Wars 2. I have played through much of the story already, but as I never played Guild Wars 1, I was uncertain of the basic lore and setting of the game. There were many references and names mentioned during the story that I didn't recognise or understand their importance while playing through. I think this will clear up many of my questions moving forward. Thanks for the great video!
Love this video! After watching the your 'why Cantha is so special' video I got very excited when I saw you posted a new lore video, and I was not dissapointed (: Please do more :D I started playing GuildWars 2 when it came out, but never having played GuildWars one it can get a little confusing.
I just started playing GW2 from FFXIV. Both games excel at different things and I'm really liking splitting my time between the two. Neither is better than the other. FFXIV seems to have a better story, RP and group PVE / raids. GW2 seems to have way better combat, an exceptional art style and the best mounts I have ever seen.
Oh how I would've loved to have this video when I started 4 years ago xD As a lore nerd myself, if I had known all this, starting playing GW2 would've been a much bigger treat than it was! And hey, I was today years old when I learned that it was the Charr that caused the Orr kingdom to sink to its depths :o They were serious about their revenge! You summarized it beautifully, will give this video to anyone I know that considers starting playing GW2 :D
I've downloaded GW2 yesterday but I'm also that kind of lore nerd that I need to learn the lore before I even play the game. So I've been studying the lore of GW all day lol
I'm new to the game, about 1 month invested so far. And I've come across next to no 'law books' giving backstory into the world & events leading up to this point. I'm L50 a.t.m & have explored everything within those level areas for human, so far. I'm used to games like Elder Scrolls which have a great access to world law & law books throughout the game, & exposition from NPCs; about world history & gods etc. Bit disappointed G.W.2 doesn't seem to have anything like that. I've yet to feel quite so invested in G.W.2 as I did in E.S.O; thanks to world law accessibility, knowing what brought 'us' to this point. Maybe my level is too low to have been exposed to much law just yet. It's the 1 disappointing thing about an otherwise good game, even given its 10 yr vintage & (now) some out-dated visualisations in rendering. I'm still having fun, just wish I could get more invested through immersive exposure in the law. May seem like a bit of a rant this, but it is my only issue so far. Which speaks volumes of the game itself considering its age.
Superb video at exactly the right moment for anyone recent to Guild Wars 2 and lots of detail for many longtime players too. Thanks for the excellent audio and video editing too, a real pleasure. One expects nothing less from Laranity, of course!
Oh wow....Laranity with no bangs!! This is the first older Laranity vid I've watched and.....it was great. No wonder you're so good now. Girl, you're just like fine wine, you get better with age 😻😻😻
Big fan! Thank you so much for your content. Im a WoW veteran since beta in 03, recentlt tried gw2 due to the current and declining state of WoW. I just wisg I would have tried GW2 sooner because its now my favorite MMO. Had i known how great it was i would have been playing this a LONG time ago. Really enjoying pvp.
by far the best video summary out there!! thank you so much for doing it!! it is the most complete, well synthezised, full of relevant video clips from gw1, great narration, you included the most important things and yet you didnt spoil any of gw2 content. Awesome work
It's probably a cool feeling for somone who played GW1 to see a place that used to be on solid ground now being submerged underwater. Feels like playing the game and investing time in it could have some rewards in the long run.
I really wish they had handled the peace treaty better. We are just told "oh yes friends now" but some of us old school GW1 players still hold a grudge against the kitties. Yes, yes, they held the territory originally, but they also nuked a city, killing thousands of women and children, then took slaves. Not gonna forgive that.
Very nice vid, happy to see finally someone who is doing some lore about GW2. Will enjoy it even more if you go in details about different aspect of the game :)
Just ooooone thing. Those lands didn't belong to the Charr either, the Charr took them from others, then the humans came and took them from the Charr. Funny enough, the humans had already lived hundreds of years longer than the Charr did on those lands before the Charr came back claiming those lands were theirs.
Since the last dragon in Guild Wars is coming out to fight what do you think the lore will go from here? Been hearing that people not sure what the future holds for Guild Wars.
I wish we could explore the why The Six gods brought Humans to Tryria. What was so terrible about the human "home world" that Tryria was a better place? Or was it something else? Plus all the unanswered questions PoF left us with about the human gods.
This game doesn't have the most exciting, nail-biting plot, but damn is its world-building rich and well realized. It's largely thanks to the wealth of lore inherited from the 4 campaigns of Guild Wars 1. The benevolent dragon Glint? You see her in GW1, flesh and bones (and crystal). The ascension of Kormir to godhood? You witness that first-hand in Nightfall campaign. Palawa Joko's conquest of Elona? Yep, GW1. The transformation of dwarves from flesh and bones to stones? Witnessed first hand in Eye of the North campaign.
This was an amazing story, thank you. It helps me as well since I am a new player, 30 days today and honestly I cannot get enough of it, the characters, scenery, history, cultures, everything about it seperates it from others and honestly I like that, was never much of a WoW fan and other similar mmos that fell into a similar form, but not GW2. Don't get me wrong WoW and the others are cool games, just not for me. Odd that it took me so long to even learn about gw2 having been gaming a long time, but it's good, I know it's early for just one month, but I really feel like I finally found my home in GW2. Thank you again for all the content you share, definitely avide subscriber and follower. May the spirits of the four winds walk with you as you walk your path. (That is actually a traditional Native Indigenous saying, and since I am one I share this sincere blessing with you).
This was so helpful. I can’t even begin to thank you enough. New player still taking in everything system-wise and lore-wise. It’s absolutely wonderful but wrapping my head around the background having not been a GW1 player hasn’t been terribly easy. Do the novels cover pre or post game events?
Nice introduction to the lore of the game. There is so much to tell, so much to explore, and you did a very good summary, with the most important details. Nicely done :)
I've been playing GW2 since shortly after launch and never knew some of this stuff . . . . . thank you so much for making this video! You just earned another YT subscriber, a like for this video, and of course I also activated the notification bell so I won't miss any of your future content. I know you're in the EU, but since you're also an Arenanet partner, so you also play on the NA servers any part of the week? I'd love to play GW2 with you and your guild on a regular basis. I believe that you are the BEST kind of GW2 player. Not too serious, willing to try any of the GW2 content and just have fun doing it. I've seen some of your other videos, and absolutely love how you and your friends enjoy playing this game for the fun of it. I also think it's really cool that Anet put musical instruments into the game, and that players like you take advantage of that feature to entertain yourselves and others with concerts. I hope you will organize more concerts in the future, and advertise them, so more players like me can enjoy them live, in the game, instead of just through a recorded video.
It's weird how nostalgic this video made me feel, considering I haven't played too much of Guild Wars 2. Great job! Now I REALLY need to figure out what race I want to play in GW2 :^)
I love this, thank you for the summary! even though I played gw2 many years ago, back them I didn't pay attention to the story at all. now I'm back and really wanna understand the story, so this is amazing! now I just gotta go find out what happened with destiny's edge and glint, that was all over the the personal story. it is so cool that you cam find the gw1 lion's arch under the water in gw2, that is just tingles moment
What a brilliant video. As a new player just working on Living World 2 this gives me a great source of info. so I can appreciate the story even better. Thanks!
Daaaaaamn Lara, your videos are getting better and better, i love it \o/ As a veteran player, i did learn more stuff that i was expecting! Good luck on your futur : )
You did a really great job of making this succinct considering how much ground it covers. One thing I'm not sure I've ever seen for someone to do a guild Wars 2 video on is to talk about their favorite aspects of story (with this proficiency of editing behind it), maybe a particular personal story quest that really stood out to you or just a plot twist or a character development, the things that are really great about the story. Too many videos about mechanics, I did not like Taimi and Brahm going through season 2, but after going through heart of thorns and path of fire I really got to appreciate how much those characters had changed.
As someone who started the game this week, this guide was extremely helpful in understanding what the heck is going on in this world. Thank you for taking the time to explain the setting in such a clear and spoiler-free way for us newbies starting out!
I just started playing the game and the lore is about my favorite part with just how much there is to it. Thankyou for this great introduction to the world!
