It is enjoyable to watch your technique. I'm more primitive myself. I use cheap metal silverware spoons that I consider disposable, even though I re-use them. Although I have wax beads, I prefer sticks as long as they don't have wicks in them. I use a butane "charcoal" lighter to melt the wax. It is frustrating to use them, though, because they tend to go out and refuse to re-light before the task is completed. I'm not concerned with the perfection of the result--yours turn out beautifully--because having seen the result of old original wax seals, they are often imperfect. My technique is this: I place the seal where I want it to appear on the document, and then draw a light outline around it. Using a wax stick, I use the lighter to melt wax inside the outline, not quite filling it. Then I use the wax stick to move the melted wax until it fills the penciled outline, pressing the stamp into the wax afterward. I usually remove the seal after about 10 seconds. Sometimes, I rub the seal across silver metallic "Encore!" brand ink, then a sprinkling of Sulyn extra-fine gold glitter before stamping the wax.

This video was very informative. I loved hearing you talk about how you just enjoyed the process as I would love to give making wax seals a go but I don't have much use for them atm seeing it as more of a process thing than just the end result gives me more confidence that it isn't a waste of time.

I find these wax seals interesting and I may get some. My dad worked for an antique dealer in the late 60s and 70s and was gifted one of these that came from England and dated back to the late 17 hundreds or early 18 hundreds. I remember using these with the little burner for all of our Christmas cards. We had tthe stick not the beads. I wish I had gotten it when my parents passed away.

Great video! Question - how do you adhere the seals? Liquid glue? Glue dots? I have been doing mine directly onto envelopes but I'm debating making some to adhere later.

I haven't tried adhering the yet but I will be experimenting with it soon. I ordered some adhesive dots from Amazon that I've read work well but I will test a few things out

So, I made the mistake of purchasing a wax seal set on Amazon. While it wasn't terrible, the Spellbinders version looks like such better quality! I gave the other kit away as I was discouraged with it. Maybe this will be a Christmas gift for myself 😊

If you have a make art Stay-tion, or any all metal surface, it will probably work even better for. Cooling off the "stand" and spoon, since it is metal, which will conduct the heat away even better than the glass mat

Thank you for this! I just had ordered my wax seals and was going to sit down this week and try it! So just a quick question, would you just use your glue to put them on your envelopes or cards? I used to think the wax was poured onto the envelope and then sealed. Thanks Mindy, I think I will be like you and find this very satisfying! :)

typically yes you would pour the wax over the seal of an envelope. i haven't tried sealing and mailing yet but I was going to try glue dots or I've read there is an adhesive dot off Amazon that works well. It should be here this week, I'm going to test some things

I wonder if you could use Scentsy wax melts or the pink zebra (Is that the right name?) that are wax beads… then your wax seals would be scented!

Bobby is correct. It's a a different type of wax. If you take the wax and drag it across paper and it leaves a mark, it won't work. So I've been told lol ....

Being left handed, I’m thinking it would be really difficult to use that spoon. Funny they don’t put a pouring spout on both sides. Unless they make a left handed spoon, which I doubt.

Great! A legit question: I emailed HoneyBee over the weekend and hope to get a reply. But if not maybe you could direct me to an answer. Amazon has “mailable” or “flexible” sticks that don’t crack through the mail so I got a few and will dedicate an old hot glue gun to those. I hope to use Spellbinders’ kit, spoon, seals and beads directly on my cards, not the envelopes as I got Spellbinders diecut seals (cheaters?) for the envelopes. Do you know if the HB or SB beads are mailable? No worries-I’ll experiment with your awesome, clear, terrific video when my SB kit arrives. Many thanks for this very well done video!

Watching replay,because I just started playing with wax seals this Christmas. Loved your video! I learned alot! Thank you. Do you know if you need extra postage if you use it on inside of a card(as embellishments)or outside on envelope flap? I used them for my gift packages and hand delivered card this year,but wondering for future makes?

It's possible. I would probably put it i a special padded envelope. I mailed one on the outside and it didn't make it lol so they definitely need to be on the inside.

Im gonna be starting soon and Im so excited! but I have a question: any ideas of what use to give them? it feels a bit like a shame to make all this beatiful crafting and then not use it do you just look for excuses to use the wax seals? like sending lots of letters and presents every chance you get?

they can also be used to decorate the front of cards :-) if using on envelopes, I would suggest placing that envelope inside a small bubble mailer. I mailed one card and my seal came off. Or you may need to have then hand cancel it instead of going through a machine.

I do have a question my tea light candle isn’t very strong and the wax isn’t melting very fast is it the wax’s fault or the candle??

If I am using these as a seal on an envelope, I would need to place that envelope in a sturdy mailer. From my experience so far, these are not withstanding the postal system.
