You are a gift, my friend. I never would have been able to see myself as an extrovert before watching your videos. Still haven't determined my type, but with your help I'm getting there.

I'm really glad, someone else said what I've been thinking about, though unable to put it into words. I just hate it when I'm at parties and I start on extra/introversion and the only thing people know is whether you like socializing or not. It's hard to explain the "cognitive extra/introversion" to others but thanks to you, I know now the terms and words, so I will try. :)

Extroverts consider the context of surrounding/external objects. Introverts will either ignore or negate this external context in favor of their own internal framework. The extent in which this individual integrates this external 'context' (within their dominant function) is how this parameter can be determined.
@CognitivePersonality
@CognitivePersonality 4 года назад
Quite often indeed! Some Extroverts have tunnel vision where they only see what they are focusing on; some Introverts are more keenly observant of external reality than most Extroverts as their dominant dialogue relates to the external (Fi-Te). Introverts can perhaps more easily disengage from external reality though, whereas the reality an Extrovert does perceive (which isn't necessarily a lot) they often have an intense need to interact with.
@infinitysconcinnity2418
@infinitysconcinnity2418 4 года назад
@@CognitivePersonality So I wonder if when extroverts have that tunnel vision, if perhaps they are engaging in their (2nd, 4th, and/or shadow) introverted functions (in order to achieve their own subjective goal/aim). Likewise, when introverts have that keen observation of external reality, I wonder if that stems from one of their (2nd, 4th, and/or shadow) extroverted functions. This is my best explanation for how the polarities can switch (beyond the usage of that individual's dominant function).
@ghaywoood5
@ghaywoood5 4 года назад
Yup. I've been confused for a dominant extrovert a couple of times because I can talk to people easily and be a bit witty. I understand the confusion because it seems like the terms anti-social, asocial, and social anxiety have been attached to introversion, but there are plenty of extroverts that have those things. But I am very much only reactive when I need to be or I'm feeling adventurous that day.

I've thought my whole life I was an extrovert just because I could talk to people easily and it never bothered me to talk to strangers. Being raised by the quietest man I've ever met, I thought that's just what introversion is. Finding out I'm introverted has been so odd, feels like an identity crisis.

can you please give an example of reactive and proactive functions? I'm having trouble figuring out which I use/prefer more
@NightCloudI
@NightCloudI 8 месяцев назад
You can read about it on the internet. I also wasn't sure and I thought I may be reactive which completely didn't feel right because I'm an introvert, but I've read some more about it and I know I'm proactive even if I might sometimes act like a reactive type. I always think about the future, I also have lack of spontaneity and I prefer to think what might be ahead of me and never live fully in the moment. I'm not quick with dealing with a problem as it arises and I'm always overthinking it.
@marybachmann

"And the cognitively proactive individual will oftentimes be envisioning future outcomes--potential courses of action--far more than oftentimes they will be pursuing them..." lol Right on. This is the story of my life. Thanks for solving that mystery. I think this settles it for me and clarifies much better than anything I've ever read before.

I have typed myself ENTJ after studying JCF theory a bit. But based on every description out there in the internet of ENTJ, I have begun to think perhaps I'm INTJ with strong use of TE. I would very much like to hear your take.
@mrtophat1720
@mrtophat1720 3 года назад
well turns out Im not ENTJ. as is mentioned in one of these videos a common mistype of INTJ is ISTP. Turns out my being thinking dom with feeling inferior and having Se and Ni as auxiliary is what led me to think i was ENTJ
@morganlowder51
@morganlowder51 3 года назад
@@mrtophat1720 Funny enough, I keep going between not knowing whether I'm INTJ, ENTJ and thirdly ISTP often.. mainly between these three. Entj and Istp have two of the same functions in the middle, being both a thinking dominant and feeling inferior type. So it's understandable why they'd mistype.

Thank you for this very interesting video about cognitive introversion/extraversion ! Would anyone be willing to help me by checking if I understood correctly ? So let's say that one spent their afternoon dancing alone while listening to music...is that person being cognitively reactive ? (reacting to "concrete" music by engaging in a dancing activity) And if one is sitting in their room alone, thinking about how more benevolence ability in human beings could have changed the past, the present and might impact the future, is that person being proactive ? Do you guys find easy to know wether your cognitive preference is extraversion or introversion ?
@xkagutaba

I like this pro/re-active measure and I think it's way more effective &/ efficient than those which are based on behavioral traits. actually, I'm wondering why the 'behaviorism' school is still operational despite its numerous flaws and limits regarding the cognitive realm. anyway, if I've understood correctly, both introversion and extroversion are process based representations of the underlying architecture of our cognition (i.e. input -> output s.t. '->' is a feedback loop) where (loosely speaking) their difference is mainly due to the source/domain of input. when the domain is chosen to be relative to the other processes and their outputs (i.e. the external world/feed) then it represents extroversion, while if it's independent (to a high degree) and relies mostly/solely on its self-generated (initial) inputs, then it represents introversion (like an A.I. which self-learns without any initial data fed by humans).
@CognitivePersonality
@CognitivePersonality 4 года назад
That's it - the source -> output is a nice way to put it; I often use the analogy of doorways and access points to demonsrate this. One invariably informs the other but the reactive cognition is absolutely far less autonomous than the proactive one :)

Big Five doesn't have such serious flaws. Its only "relevant" problem is that not much can be said about it, and that its characteristics are very open. However, I did produce good scientific results. Bif Five is an example of a behavioral and functional operant school.

The question isn't: "Are you more flexible?" OR "Are you more fixed?" --> --> It is: "WHERE are you more flexible?" (cognitively speaking) and, "WHERE are you more fixed?" (cognitively speaking)

would you say that introverts have a more predictive/adaptive attitude? they go with the flow, observe processes rather than change them? whereas extroverts are more exploratory, resisting and tend to recombine existing elements to make something new? i still don't get subtle difference although i rewatched your video like 4 times in the last month.

Do you think extroverts rely on the social world to determine their place within society/gain validity, where as introverts dismiss this and kind of 'go their own' way so to speak?
@CognitivePersonality

Both types can 'go their own way', though introverts may have a higher proclivity towards doing so. Extraverts absolutely determine their place by way of interaction more than introverts though!

I've seen the "four dichotomies" come up in several of your videos, and how tests on the four dichotomies don't work. What about tests based on cognitive functions? I've seen people take online tests to assess their cognitive function usage. I assume many of the problems of self-assessment still apply, but are these cognitive function tests "less bad" than "four dichotomy"-based tests? Or is there no real difference in accuracy?
@CognitivePersonality
@CognitivePersonality 4 года назад
I'd say it's a different kind of bad. Perhaps a lesser of two bads, so to speak. The plus is that they're looking in the right place; the minus is that type is assigned based upon a hierarchy of function preference. An additional minus would be that the validity of the test is relative to the creator's understanding of cognitive function interplay - as such Se and Si will tend to be scored lower, and Fi and Ti will tend to be scored higher. I do feel this newer approach shows promise, however.. At least in regards to determining primary functions; less so in regards to positioning these functions within the cognitive map :)

In your INFP vs ISFP video you say that these types are by nature conformist to the preexisting rule sets around them. Wouldn't this mean they are being reactive rather than proactive in their behavior?
