The Mellon Arena (originally called the Civic Arena) in Pittsburgh is one of the most unusual buildings in the world, and in this clip from WQED's special titled INVENTED, ENGINEERED & PIONEERED IN PITTSBURGH, we learn what is still impressive about the structure through the eyes of engineers and architects.

I feel privileged to have attended many events at the arena--hockey, basketball, concerts, even a Mass--and to have witnessed the opening and closing of the dome. I especially remember James Taylor's comment when they opened the dome for his performance: "Nice place you got here."

They should have reused the space as a shopping and dining area for downtown, used the hockey rink as a public ice skating rink when PPG place is closed for the season, or even use it as an indoor park, mini golf, ext. there could have been so many ideas for this place.
