In this video, I test several inverters I purchased throughout the years and discuss some of the details of each of them. All inverters work, but IMO, some work better than others.
My favorite low cost inverter is the Harbor Freight Cen-tech 750w modified sine wave inverter.
My favorite travel inverter is the Schumacher 140w modified sine wave inverter.
The Bestek inverters function, but I wouldn’t buy the 300w one again due to the lower ac output voltage. The 1000w works good but the fan on it always runs which wastes power and is annoying!
My overall favorite brand of inverter is Reliable Electric because it is pure sine wave and it comes the closest to 120v AC output.

No need to leave ON to drain capacitor. All electronics have drain resistors to do that for you, The output voltage can be adjusted by turn a potentiometer inside.

I have been researching different inverters. I REALLY appreciate your creating this video to show the differences. I have heard so many times from people "If it's rated for that load, it will do it just fine" and that is simply not true. Thanks again!

Just a note about the spark...I put a disconnect switch on the inverter post...attach cables..no spark..turn switch on..if you ever explode a battery youll probably do yours that way too..it tends to make a mess..be safe ..oh..I bought a Schumacher 410 watt inverter for $10.49 at the auto parts store..closeout on them I think..I got the last one..also bought the 150 watt for the lighter socket for $12.49... The 410 is a modified sine but runs my t.v. (visio 24 inch) just fine...the 24 volt Aims 2000 watt inverter/charger coming next week I had to pay full price for lol but it has everything I wanted...I just had to pay for it ouch...but I would have it now so Im gonna try to keep it from screwing up...Ive had 12 volt ones but man they really hit the batteries hard so I think 24 volts is better..Ill find out about next Monday the blue box will be here

I bought that same little red/black 300 watt Bestek inverter about a year ago. It performs the same way. Has barely 110v too. I opened it up hoping to find a pot to adjust, but, NOPE! It is so cheap there is no way to adjust voltage. I wrote Bestek an e-mail, got no response. You were good on observing the speed changes on fan between different inverters. Note that the "modified sine wave" ones will not run a fan to full speed because of the nasty harmonic loaded poor waveform they have. The big 1000 watt Bestek you have seems fairly decent. I own a 3500 watt (un)Reliable inverter too. I haven't blown it up yet, but it has many issues. Nice video.

So you're saying the reliable pure sine wave isn't any good nor reliable?
@rhiantaylor3446
@rhiantaylor3446 3 года назад
Just an observation - if you look at the waveform of a modified sin wave inverter you will see it has periods with zero volts plus periods with a flat-topped peak voltage designed to create the correct RMS value as is indicated on the sticker. However, unless you have a "true RMS" reading voltmeter, which are expensive and not that common, other voltmeters will not accurately indicate the "RMS" value of anything but a fairly good sin wave.
@boots7859
@boots7859 3 года назад
True, You need a scope to see the actual sine wave. A DMM, even a good one will be very hard to see anything useful with relating to RMS.

I did a test on my Aims 2000 watt inverter/charger , with a 2200 watt load it stayed on 120.0 volts for 3 minutes, then it dropped to 119 .8 right before the charger coming on...I had a 1450 watt air fryer and a 700 watt coffeepot and TV on...I was just testing the 1/0 cable connections for extra heat but there wasn't any...

It sparks when connected because of the large capacitors in the inverter. The "surge" could damage the inverter. You need to connect through a large resister to pre-charge those caps and avoid the spark.

I believe you mentioned your refrigerator twice. Did I miss you telling us what kind of refrigerator? I’m looking to power a 90 L dorm refrigerator. My 300 W didn’t do it. I was sort of hoping it would. Now I’m wondering if 800 hundred will be enough or should I go all the way to 1000. Knowing what kind of fridge you have might help.

I'm trying to keep my 500w ebike charged as I'm riding. I have a 4lb scooter battery that powered on a 750w power inverter. So I thought about plugging the ebike charger in the inverter with just 1 small scooter battery. So I asked the man that works at the battery store he told me since the charger is 48v , he said I need to have 4 small scooter batteries to make it 48v. Do I need 4 batteries or can I just use 1 battery. He said if I use less than 48v it can mess up something. Is that true or false ?? May some 1 tell me the names of the jump starters that has 1000w and more that's all electric and very light weight or the lightest possible like around 23-50 lbs so I can mount it on my ebike ??

Thanks for sharing. It may be a misunderstanding, since I'm not a English native speaker. But you mentioned that modified sine wave is not adequate to electronics, but at the end of the video you recommend keeping the portable inverter in the car to charge your eletronics? Did I get it wrong?

With the inverters off, do they stil draw power from the battery when off? I.e. draining your battery.
@kimmer6
@kimmer6 2 года назад
Yes...some do. The Bestek 300 watt unit powers up the USB ports even with the inverter switched off. I think I saw 6 watts in this mode. I was wondering why my lithium battery was draining faster than an identical battery that was not hooked up. So I unplug the inverter every time its not being used.

You may know this already, but I heard you state that you thought the low voltage had something to do with the watts.. You are correct... Volts x Amps = Watts

Interesting. The voltage coming out of my wall is 111v and my moms place 106v. One thing with under-volting is there is likely less chance to burn out badly designed electronics that are already operating at the top of their range, in most cases as that will mean the device is drawing little less current, I cant think of any electronics that have failed us in the last 30 years. I guess we've been living with a little less light, fan, heat and air conditioning and saving some energy without even knowing it!

Not sure but I think there is a small electricity cost consumed by the inverter in the conversion. Least in the modified sine wave inverters and more for the pure sine wave inverters. This is greater for the 2000 W inverters rather than the 300W one. So if you only have a small load, don’t buy a 2KW inverter “just in case”
@wallacegrommet9343
@wallacegrommet9343 2 года назад
Do you have that reversed? My MSW inverter uses 80 amps to create 900 watts of AC. Crude comparison, but my microwave cooks three times longer on the inverter than on utility supplied AC.
@darylcheshire1618

@@wallacegrommet9343 I wouldn’t use MSW on anything except resistive loads.

@darylcheshire1618
@darylcheshire1618 2 года назад
@@wallacegrommet9343 I recently got a 500W PSW inverter as the 300W MSW was sucessful in running my NBN stuff during a power failure and it wasn’t that expensive. You could get a 1000W PSW for your lab rat. Inverters in Oz used to cost a dollar per watt but is cheaper nowadays.

Good video, however unless you can get a scope on them while running you don't know how good the sine wave actually is. Better than modified most likely, however could still be killing you equipment a lot faster than normal 120v utility power would.

Wzrelb 3000watt inverter. Not recommended. Other you tube reviews show zero short circuit protection. Risk of fire or damage to unit is possible and therefore expense.

The exact voltage isn't really important. You don't need to "drain" the inverters. The initial spark is harmless.

500W not enough to power a fridge ??? Normal fridge is 150W max.
@yeslawrence
@yeslawrence Год назад
the starting current needed to start the compressor, aka LRA: lock rotor amps, is a lot more than 500w. You are right that the running wattage of a typical consumer fridge compressor is in the 150w range.

What happened to the audio @5:07 ? Almost totally inaudible, and at @8:01 it is inaudible! Seriously dude you should have fixed that before posting this video :(, had to use sub titles. @6:32 would have been useful to see the voltage then and your other load tests (bar the ones that have their own voltmeter). Also it would have been really useful to push all your inverters to near their max ratings, or at least a good chunk of it. e.g you could've connected your fridge to the 2 big inverters to see if they hold their voltages. Some useful info here, but many opportunities missed.
