Every child is guaranteed a public education free from discrimination, but a WCNC Charlotte investigation found schools in North Carolina report suspending and expelling students with disabilities, per capita, more than any other state in the country. North Carolina's reliance on this form of punishment forces vulnerable kids, many of them in elementary school, to miss weeks of classroom learning.
Advocates say the research shows exclusionary discipline doesn't correct the behavior and only creates more problems for students and society.

Did anyone read what they child did? He assaulted the teacher multiple times and destroyed expensive property. Thats why there is a teacher shortage. No one wants to get injured. The kid is on a fast track to jail. This was a terrible, one-sided piece.

As a teacher, what I know is there are frequent coverups and discipline action that isn’t taken while some students are pushed out of school. To discipline is to teach. Schools across our nation are even pushing kids out which pushes them to prison, the street, or psychiatric hospitals. The metro area I live in has actually closed day treatment programs that leave students and their families in crisis.

When I was in Grade 5, I started having Epileptic Seizures. Teachers complained they couldn't complete the lesson because of me, so I was suspended. Even when medications reduced the seizures from daily to weekly (which was a huge success to my family), that wasn't good enough. Instead of standing for my rights, I was told to stop thinking about what I want, and focus on what's best for others. Same with Sports Groups, as I was redirected to the Special Olympics and leave Society alone.
