Hats off to you for breaking down the movie Boiler Room in such an engaging way! 🧐 It's awesome how you dove into the plot, highlighted the parallels with other films, and emphasized the importance of humanizing the scam victims. The finance concepts were explained in a clear and relatable manner, making it easy for viewers to follow along. Your insights shed light on the unethical practices in the brokerage industry, and it's great to see someone addressing these issues. Keep up the fantastic work, and looking forward to more intriguing content from you!

I wanted to become a stock broker after watching this movie when I grew up, but thankfully never went that direction because it would have been concerning lol. But I'll forever really enjoy this movie. I don't know if anyone else knows the movie Bookies or Poolhall Junkies, but those are also two other great ones that are definitely different movies but also incredibly similar.

Alternativ derivation of the Piker term: English infantry men (using pikes) were known to not usually go all out with daily deaths between pikers in the english civil war being in the single digits. Only when officers or mounted troops joined the fight it would become a decisive battle.

It wasnt exclusive to English Civil Wars or early modern era. Medieval battles (that also was dominated by polearms) ussualy 'only' had 10-20 percent casualties on both sides of the engagement. The (in)famous use of greatswords were invented during the late middle ages with breaking up spear/pike formations in order to inflict more casualties in shorter amount of time. Thus achieving decisive victory in an otherwise prolionged war. The Landskneckht under Emperor Maximilian were amongst the fiercest of these men.

I have always understood the phrase Boiler Room to reference the practice of using the reputation of a prestigious address to facilitate deception as in: "Perkins Elmont and Hastings maintains the central office at 40 Wall" suggesting mahogany lined corner offices with territorial views while in fact operating out of a janitors closet with a phone line in the sub-basement. A more florid version of a mail drop.

I think there is a legend from the '29 crash that a shoeshine boy named Colombo (I think) worked out front of the NY Stock Exchange. Over time he had gotten to know many of the important traders. When the crash started, he asked one of his regular customers what he should do. The advice the man gave was "don't start immediately selling just because other people are. That's for pikers." That was the first time I heard "pikers" used.

There's an alternative ending to this movie where at the end Harry shows up at JT Marlin building carrying a gun in his backpack. Before the Police arrives he collide with Seth by accident, who is leaving the building. Seth helps him pick up his stuff not knowing who the Harry was. Harry proceeds to the building killing everyone and police arrives too late. I suggest you look it up on youtube. It gives interesting perspective about the ending.

Fun movie and easy to understand and stay engaged with for those not into finance. One minor point: While it makes for a sympathetic ending and feels good, I would guess that Harry would not actually get his money back. Any gains from that last second trade would likely get clawed back by whatever bankruptcy judge takes over the unwinding of the firm after the FBI/SEC raid. All recoverable money (including any early "winners") would get pooled in a common account and distributed somewhat equally to all participants (victims). Harry would likely see a few cents on the dollar if lucky.

Wolf of Wall Street and Boiler Room are based on the same series of events. Boiler Room is told from the narrative of a broker that worked at Stratton Oakmont.
