Invisible Ribbed Bind Off, for 1x1 Knit Ribbing

This video demonstrates how to work the invisible ribbed bind off, for 1x1 knit ribbing. It is a sewn bind off technique that allows you to mimic the rib appearance of your stitches along the bind off edge. The demonstrated technique is specifically intended for 1x1 rib starting with a knit stitch, and has a stretchy finish. I've demonstrated how to work the bind off in the round so you can also see how I like to join the 2 ends of the round together.

That is a GREAT finishing method for fingerless mitts which use K1, P1 ribbing at the top of the hand. I also use the Italian cast on which then looks the same at the wrist. HOWEVER...traditional cast on and bind off does give a piece that “hand knitted look” which is unmistakable. When you’ve knitted 100+ pairs of fingerless mitts, the cast on and bind off methods vary with the mood du jour!

Since this is not requiring use of the back needle and if you are doing Magic Loop or using two circulars or even Flexi-Flips, any of these, the back needle can hang down and is then far less likely to get caught when you are sewing on the front needle. Otherwise, the tutorial is really great and the technique is one to want to use, most definitely.

Omg, I used this video last month to bind off toe-up socks I was knitting and it worked SO well. It did take maybe an hour to do the whole thing (Maybe it's partially due to that it was my first time I was doing it and I didn't know how long of a tail I needed to do it), but it was so worth it. Also I was doing it for 2 socks at a time.), but it was so worth it. The instruction were crystal clear.

Thanks for this video. For the life of me I couldn't figure out why my bind off done according to the written instructions came out looking wonky. Now I realize I slipped all stitches pearlwise instead of alternating between knit and purl. Do you know if there's a way to rip this cast off? The first 15 cm of my cardigan are very different from the rest due to this mistake.

Is this suitable for binding off a neck if you have done a twisted rib, as in knitting through the back of every stitch?
@wipqueen715
@wipqueen715 2 года назад
It would have been nice if my first stitch was a knit row, as yours was. Since you didn’t specify, I figured it was irrelevant. While the bind off looks ok, it doesn’t look the same. Still looks better than a regular bind off tho.

Is there a way to do this if the first stitch of the rib is a purl? I.e. not a K1P1 rib, but rather a P1K1 rib - flat, unfortunately, not in the round, so i can't just skip a stich. I might mess around with it unless you have any ideas!

In case someone is in the same boat, as was I, what I did was to treat the first purl and knit stitches as one and it seems to have worked fine. I'm a beginner knitter, finishing off my first ever sweater, so take my advice with a pinch of salt and mind that my wool is very fluffy, so I was betting on that helping me hide my experiment. Would love to hear from an experienced knitter!

Hi Celine! I'm sorry but I haven't tried modifying this technique for k2 x p1 ribbing myself. You might be able to try changing up the order of knitwise and purlwise directions with the tapestry needle to make it work, but I think it'll need a bit of experimentation.

@TheSweaterCollective
@TheSweaterCollective 2 года назад
Hi Lauren! Are you knitting in the round? If so, a really easy fix is to undo the final stitch of your final round, then slip it to the start of your bind off round. You won't notice that it's 1 round shorter than the other stitches, and it should mean that when you start binding off, you'll have a "knit, purl, knit, purl" pattern by default. Let me know if that doesn't do the trick!

Can you use this for 2 x 1 bind off?
@TheSweaterCollective
@TheSweaterCollective 6 лет назад
Possibly not unfortunately, the patterning really aligns best with a k1, p1 sequence. There might be a way to repeat the knit stitch action twice, then work the purl action once, and continue to repeat across the rest of the bind off, but I'm not quite sure how that would work out as I haven't tried it myself. Jeny's surprisingly stretchy bind off is a nice flexible alternative though!

It is worth emphasizing, since it is basically impossible to undo the stitches, that, you should start the pattern on a knit stitch. I missed this (foolish I know) and did a good 20 stitches wrong before noticing. Also that you will need way more bind-off yarn length then you ever thought possible. Also, tension needed to be firmly tugged along the way. Other than these initial hiccups it worked beautifully for this beginner knitter, thanks for the lovely video!
