Dua Lipa's side said they made it and realized later it was INXS. If it wasn't intentional it must've been, at the very least, a subconcience use of the INXS riff. That riff was so famous, so iconic and central to this whole song. It's a pretty intentionally constructed riff, not just a throwaway, so would be pretty unusual to come up with the same, exact riff completely independently. They added Andrew Farriss, the music writer for INXS, as a co-writer of her song, so that'll rigthly make him a lot of money.
There can be no doubt the co-writer who brought that riff had heard Need You Tonight and had it embedded somewhere in their brain. It’s too unique and odd yet distinct to just ”happen” - (three quarter notes followed by half a bar of 16th notes, it’s goofy). Good thing they admitted as much and gave Andrew (and Michael?) credits. These things can happen by accident though, and frequently do. However, if the Dua Lipa song had 10+ co-writers, like pop songs today tend to have, it is pathetic none of them recognized the riff - and no one at the label or in management. (If you know so little about music history you’re probably in the wrong line of business). I don’t think Andrew (or Michael’s estate) care too much about the money though - INXS were huge in the late 80s and 90s and made a lot more money than is possible with a hit song these days. It was a different level of success than what Dua Lipa enjoys, and it was a market that actually paid for music. I imagine they care about recognition of who wrote the thing though.
@@hackapump To be fair to today's music writers (and I am not particularly a fan of the current iteration of pop) a lot of the reason why there is 10+ co-writers (or Beyonce with 8+ etc) is because they sample and lift so much from the past that most of those song writers credited, like Farriss and Hutchence, are merely attributions and not involved with the construction of the song. Taking a look at the Dua Lipa song I see that 3 of the 'song writers' are actually the producers for the song (Johnson, Johnson & Watt) which makes me think it might be more along the lines of what someone like George Martin did for the Beatles & Phil Spector did for many, only now they're looking to get that song writer's residual rather than just sharing the Producer money.
There is a great scene in the INXS docudrama about Andrew jamming at home while waiting for a cab to go the airport and then hitting on this riff, he then goes on to record a demo for Michael to listen to all the while the cab is sitting in the driveway with the meter running.
I've never heard it, or any of their albums, which is really strange because I adore 80s music and everything I've heard from INXS so far. Time to go get them all then. Thanks.
1988 was a very good year for INXS...they had four songs that made the Year End Billboard Hot 100: #95 (my fave) "Never Tear Us Apart", #65 "New Sensation", #46 "Devil Inside" probably my 2nd favorite song of the year, and the actual #2 song of the year "Need You Tonight" which was only eclipsed by George Michael's "Faith".
@@BisscuteReacts You might also check out one from 1987 Tim Cappello - "I Still Believe" from the Lost Boys movie soundtrack. You could do a two fer one with the song and then also react to Lost Boys the movie, it's an 80s hit directed by Batman films director Joel Schumacher.
This is my beautiful friend Michael and I still feel his loss in my heart,we knew each other long before he found fame - miss the dork like crazy, wish you were still here mate, playing the pubs round Nth Sydney,up at the Crowie Hotel wish it was still the 70's/80's - love you always and forever darl❤️ another 2 years and we'd have reached 65 and gone out to celebrate - miss ya head ❤
It wasn't sampled. It was credited as an interpolation. Basically it was so similar they had to credit it as a recreation of the original. They claim it wasn't planed that way and that they made the connection later on.
@@EnervatedSociety as a musician i can confirm that these accidents happen all the time. i will be fiddling around with something and then it sounds exactly like something else without me even trying and then i have to try something else. so i def believe their claim.
What original music did Xenniels make? They steal all *their* best hooks from old school artists! Ffs. I luv new school artists - but give honor & respect to the old school ppl u lifted the best parts of your songs from. I don't respect that ish.
Dua Lipa made the songs “Break My Heart” and “Dance Crying” and both (IMO) sound like "Need you tonight" by INXS which made their song many-Decades earlier.
You’re not crazy, there’s NO WAY whoever wrote that Dua Lipa song wasn’t intentionally copying the INXS song. As far as I know, the songwriters from INXS have now been given songwriting credits on the song, but that doesn’t change the fact that it was copied lol
It's impossible to convey today just how dominant, ubiquitous, and thoroughly enjoyed INXS was in this era. If you were a young American during this time, you understand completely whether you liked them or not. If you weren't, then there's just no way to describe or explain it to you. INXS wasn't just a band and their music, they were a phenomenon in that time and always will be.
Incredible band that I couldn't get enough of back in the day. The loss of Michael was such a sad moment in music history. He was so gifted. Please react to New Sensation if you get a chance. It's another dance floor masterpiece!!!
Wow You discovered plagiarism, if the members of INXS see this video they could file a lawsuit against that artist for using part of the song Need you tonight....
I remember the original music video was 'Need You Tonight/Mediate', because they are consecutive songs on the album, immediately after the Need You Tonight part ended, the song Mediate began played
Dua lipa’s songwriters/producers did steal it. So much that they backtracked and they had two give the chief songwriters of this song song credits. This whole album, kick is one the best albums of the entire 80’s. 😊
Need You Tonight" is the song that had me purchasing their stuff. Sheer hotness set to music. Michael Hutchence was one hell of a frontman! RIP, man. I miss these dudes. Cool reaction, yo.
I love the Dua Lipa song and never realized this riff was sampled in this song until I heard mentioned it on another channel and I was completely mind blown! Next INXS, please check out What You Need, live at Wembly Stadium in 1991.
I am sooooo sick of people saying "sampled" ! If you didn't ask it is theft - straight up - and hopefully those who do not ask will get sued like Queen & Bowie did to Vanilla Ice. At least it seems the Farriss family will be compensated here as well...............when what was the biggest band in the world is ripped off you MUST pay.
@bigs1546 No, I agree completely. I'm not sure that the Dua Lipa situation is like that though? Music is one of those things that gets into your soul, and 30+ years have passed since Need You Tonight. Maybe it was unintentional, who knows.
@@mikehenderson6529 A "suicide blond" is a really old term for a girl who bleached her own hair. An old euphemism for suicide was "died by their own hand," and they called them suicide blondes because their hair was "dyed by their own hand."
Another great Rock anthem In Australia from back in the 80s is a song called Good Times with Jimmy Barnes and Inxs (official version) an absolute cracker of a song (Jimmy Barnes also Rock Royalty in Australia)...
I saw them in 1987during the X tour. 🎉discovered them during the shaboo shabah album. Michael Hutchins was the most Amazing singer and Gorgeous I ever saw. RIP Michael 😢
I have seen them perform live a few times when Michael Hutchinson was alive and they were always amazing, a legendary Australian Rock Band, try New Sensation from the Kick album (official version)..
@@rickcolumbo3148 He actually didn't, his girlfriend at the time made up that story because she couldn't deal with the fact he actually killed himself intentionally.
@@rickcolumbo3148you're an a*sehole mate, Michael and I were friends in our teens and that's absolutely the most disgusting thing I've ever read, Michael had more class, talent and integrity in his little finger than you'll EVER have in your entire life, and besides how he was found is actually none of your,or the other ghouls, business when you spend nearly 26 years hearing people speculate and say the most humiliating and degrading things about someone who means a lot to you, it's f*cked.
I love your reactions to this band. I'm from Argentina, and in those years even so far away as we are, INXS was an amazing success. We even had memorial events for Michael Hutchence. I'm sad to say to you that he passed away. Perhaps you already know this, but still.
That’s an incredible observation, and on-point. When I heard her vocal line (for the first time) my mouth fell open. The similarities are totally obvious. Ed Sheeran was just found not liable in a lawsuit claiming he had plagiarized an older song, in the same key with a semi-similar theme. But to me, her vocals sound like way more of a copycat deal. Definitely not crazy- you’ve got some sharp ears.
@@martinaeleonora8479 I think he was the greatest frontman of the 80's, and one of the greatest in music history. He had the looks, the moves, the voice...the total package!
@@BisscuteReacts yes please 🔥 ★ - *INXS - New Sensation (Official Music Video)* ★ - *INXS - Mystify (Official Music Video)* Please react to the music video first and then live performances
Now I need someone explain why I hear the song "Good Luck, Babe!" by Chappell Roan and I'm instantly reminded of France's singer Alizée but I can't figure out which song?
Written by the late Michael Hutchence and Andrew Farriss. This is the most popular song 🎵 fron the album Kick. Dua Lipa sampled this accidentally. Thus, she credited the 2 members of INXS.

Darn i wish she followed with Mediate since they go hand in hand. I was very fortunate enough to see Inxs at the Boathouse, while Michael Huggins was laying on the speaker singing mediate, he slapped my hand. It was of the last shows in the US before they were about to do their 20 year reunion and he killed himself from asphyxiation
WOW! You may have uncovered a copyright infringement case for INXS to pursue! Another INXS fave is DISAPPEAR, as well as NEW SENSATION . They were real popular on juke box, still are I imagine.
Biss, the word that describes the rhythm pattern you recognised, is "cadence". I was 14 when this came out. I LOVE the official single version. Unfortunately, the album version is extremely different. It's not so punchy. It's just more generic. The single version gives the guitars audio space to cut through.
Hey Biss, so that you`re living in Germany, what about a reaction to another German Band!? Here are some tips of German Bands and the Songs, I think you`re gonna like most: H-Blockx - Rising High; H-Blockx- Move; H- Blockx- Little Girl; H-Blockx- Revolution. Guano Apes- Open Your Eyes; Guano Apes- Big in Japan; Guano Apes- Lord of the boards. And last but not least: Doro and Warlock: All we Are, by the way, Doro is Known as the German Metall Queen!
Many bands.90's and up...take melodíes from 80's banda...AND Made "covers"...but 80's Time....ufff ....music..voices....greatest Time music...first quality👍
What you need Live from Wembley 1991 is a nice one it's from the concert movie Live Baby Live. That should be exactly your kind it is 6:26 pure Passion 😊
Trying to get Dua Lipa sued. 🤣 Nope. Don't think her song is nearly similar, never would've linked them together. Her song makes me think of another though but I can't place it! 😪
Check out an Australian band doing a cover from a classic Australian band. INXS cover of The Loved One. You have the long black hair, red dress is optional
Bis, licks, riffs, chord progression, sequencing has been borrowed for a millennia. Just only so many combinations. So an artist, or producer, says hey what if we just use something like that INXS song. Too bad but just the facts of music these days.
It was a great Pop Rock band and it's one of my favorite songs. Unfortunately what happened with the vocalist happened. It is very common for current songs to play a musical verse of old songs, although some also do so in the lyrics.
I had a piano riff driving me crazy, listen to Jane by Jefferson Starship and Sanctuary by J Geils. I'm not sure which song came first but both are from the 70s. Your two songs are much further apart. Good ear though keep up the great reactions!
i agree, wel spoted, stacato vocal line copying v lead guitar rif of inxs. big in v 80s had many hits msotly dance based, funk/rock, also had hits oin v 90s, frm au. sadly michael lead singer n songwriter died young.
I could list so many INXS songs, but here's my list of songs you could choose from, in my personal ranking. Their songs are usually short, so maybe you could do a 2 for 1. Original Sin The One Thing Don't Change This Time What You Need New Sensation Suicide Blonde Black and White I Send a Message Devil Inside Listen Like Thieves
Love It! So Glad you revisited them. You need to react to something from LIVE AT WEMBLEY STADIUM in July 1991. Amazing live! My Suggestion: "DEVIL INSIDE". Just look at the crowd. Filled to capacity and totally into it, and putty in their hands. Cheers!!
In learning these songs for out INXS Tribute band, we always struggle with learning their songs. On the surface they seem simple and easy, but when you start pulling them apart and putting them back together, they always turn out to be more difficult than first realized. I thin k it's their song structure, or in some cases the lack thereof that causes us problems.
Sampling ruined music. The weird thing about it is that the so called musicians who steal other musicians intellectual property are the first to sue other people for "stealing their music" they're thieves AND hypocrites.
