The R&R HoF decided to become more of a tv show than a legit hall of fame sometime around the late '90s. Their cred has been in the toilet ever since. The list of deserving artists who have yet to be inducted is endless.
Too right. It’s shocking they aren’t. Sign the petition - not that there even should be any need for it. They were an original, musically talented, electrifying band and wrote some of the best music of our times. And Michael was one of the poets of our generation. He was one of us. ❤
This was such a great performance. I can remember exactly where I was, who was around me, and what we were doing when this aired. I had never heard the song, had never really been a fan of INXS or Ray Charles, but I stopped the card game and ignored everyone around me while they played this song. Transferring it to RU-vid doesn't do it justice. They damn near brought the house down that night. Among the greatest performances ever aired on TV!
Here in Australia it was actually voted the Number. 1 greatest performance on Late Shows and the David Letterman Show more specifically, by Australian artists from the beginning of the Letterman Show until its final show. So that just goes to show how great it was. And the story was said that while INXS & Ray Charles were doing rehearsals before the show began, David Letterman walked out into the studio to see it for himself, and was amazed at how brilliant it was. Hence the reason he says before the band play in the introductions, David Letterman says, "Folks, this gonna be great", INXS and Ray Charles. And I reckon In my opinion that David Letterman probably would have voted this as his Number. 1 performance on his show. I think the only thing that maybe changed that, was when the Food Fighters, wrote everlong and it was during a difficult period for David Letterman and when the Food Fighters postponed a South American show and flew back to the US to perform Everlong after his heart surgery, I think that was a big reason as to why David Letterman personally now would probably choose the Foo Fighters as his Number. 1 act on his show.

Avevo fatto tardi, forse le 4 o le 5, chissi ricorda. A quei tempi non c'erano i cellulari e se volevi contattare qualcuno dovevi chiamarlo sul fisso. A New York nessuno alzava il telefono quando suonava, era prassi aspettare che scattasse la segreteria e il vivavoce. Si ascoltava chi era che stava chiamando e se proprio era urgente allora si alzava la cornetta e si rispondeva. Altrimenti si ascoltava tutto il messaggio e poi si decideva il da farsi. Quella mattina mi chiamó Tony per dirmi che nel pomeriggio sarebbe stato a registrare a Broadway: "Vuoi rispondereee, Testa di Legno?" era l'inizio dei suoi messaggi, metteva di buon umore. Mi vestii e m'incamminai, c'erano sí anche i taxi, ma io ero solito prenderli solo di notte, di giorno camminavo per Manhattan da cima a fondo macinando chilometri su chilometri, anzi, miglia. Dopo una partitella a pallone coi ragazzi di Washington Square presi la via di su - io stavo nel Village, poi c'era Down Town, Mid Town e Up Town, se non ricordo male, pazienza, sono passati trent'anni... Avevamo appuntamento all'ingresso del Radio City Music Hall. Fumavo e aspettavo. Poi esce Tony con due suoi amici, Tim e Mike. "Ti presento Tim e Mike, loro sono un gruppo rock australiano, hanno appena suonato con Ray Charles !". Ci penso un po' e poi gli chiedo "What's the name of the band?" E Michael dice: "In Excess." Io li conoscevo ed ascoltavo già, conoscevo anche l'aria di qualche loro hit. Cosí entrammo in un locale lí vicino dove si esibiva una famosa cantante blues e prendemmo vagonate di pollo fritto e birra fino a scoppiare parlando di Australia, d'Italia e di fica.

According to the "Shine Like It Does Anthology" CD booklet, Ray Charles was recording at the same studio at the time, and they really wanted to record with him, so they sent him 2 songs, "Make Your Peace" and "Please". Ultimately, he chose "Please" because the key was too high for his voice on "Make Your Peace". They didn't think he would actually say yes, so the band was quite honored to have such a big music legend perform with them.
