Thank you for this video. It reminded me of the time when we, as a family living in Europe, established some traveling rules for our EV. We have driven over 65,000 miles in our IONIQ 5 over the course of the last 2 years. Quite often, as a family with 2 kids, we take trips over 500 miles. Here are our rules: 1, Do not travel more than 120 miles in a stretch. It is better to find nice spots, like small towns or parks, to visit while charging (we try not to sit in the car unless it rains), even on slow chargers like 50 kW. In the trunk, when you push the backseats forward, you can fit 2 smaller electric scooters for exploration while charging. 2.Travel heavy... take 20% off the anticipated range. 3.When traveling into mountainous areas, take an additional 30% off the range (you get some of the range back when going downhill, but you have to get up first). 4. Inform yourself about the stops and choose the most interesting ones. 5. Relax... you are on holiday.
When I saw the luggage container on the roof and the highway speeds I thought "nope, the range estimates will not be right". I'm sorry it made the trip harder, I hope it didn't sour you on your car; it's a really nice one! It's great that you shared this information; it'll help me plan my ioniq 5 roadtrips and make sure I do short hops of ~100 miles, keep speed below 70 etc.
Jesus yeah, Drag from the roof container alone is more energy burn than everything else combined. Hitch Cargo box would have saved the range stress tenfold.

Just to make you aware you should jot turn regen braking on when highway driving, it causes you to waste power, great going down steep hills but turn it straight back off afterwards, it just causes you to slow down and then have to use power speeding back up whenever you let off the accelerator
Great video. I agree with the 100 mile dash strategy, especially with an EGMP vehicle. I live close to Burbank, that station is always busy early, late, whatever. Fortunately it doesn’t matter to me since that’s close to home.
Aerodynamics is the key. I bet that cargo box on the top took its toll on your range. The weight in the car is also a factor. And the speed. Those 80 mph limits in Utah really gobble up the kWh! Dropping down to 70 mph in CA made a real difference, didn't it?
Green River has zero other charging options within 50 miles. So it almost always pays to charge up in Grand Junction before heading west. I prefer to just stop when there is a charging option and make it a short charging stop.
Tried to order one of these, but the waiting list was 3 years, so I ordered a Bolt instead (only had to wait 6 months for that). Not as awesome, but only half the price AND got the rebate so that consoles me somewhat.
We just got the same car a few weeks ago. I really like it but road tripping without free charging seems no good to me. I mean at 2000 miles if you had a car making 25 mi a gallon that's conservative in my outback I was getting 30 to 32 on the highway. But at 25 miles a gallon that's 80 gallons say $4 a gallon in gas which is a lot more than some areas but not California That's like 320 bucks or something. I think what would have been a little better was for you to advertise miles per kilowatt hour I'm guessing you were probably average in 2.6 or 7? But yeah I would do it if I had free charging there's no way in hell without that it's a waste of money
85 MPH? Three children? Any more dangerous things you guys do with your kids besides driving a vehicle close to max gross weight with a luggage carrier? I can only think of one flat tire and the loss of control crash! This could be child endangerment! Sorry but this was irresponsible driving.
I appreciate your concern but yes parts of Utah are 85 mph and we followed the speed limit where ever we were. The total additional weight in the car was 650lbs. That includes 5 persons and roughly 150lbs in the cargo box by itself but definitely within the manufactures recommendations.
