I never had iPhone before, but lightning is much better than usb-c, because my phone and cable is more than 5 years old, and it still grips the connector tightly and makes proper contact, unlike usb-c, which after half a year wobbles, slips out, and has a faulty contact, it doesn't always make contact. I was also very surprised by this, but it is true. On the other hand, I would also strongly support side loading and third-party applications and stores, because it is not good to spend on everything, something and many other things would be available.
Sideloading was never a security issue for a number of reasons: MacOS was open from the start and still is without issue. If someone is afraid they can stay in the AppStore and not move from there, then in the end, it's just a matter of choice. The public could have forced Apple to allow sideloading long ago if, faced with this problem, they turned to the competition, but apparently Apple consumers are comfortable this way. Monopolies can be destroyed very quickly if people realized the power of decision they have.
MacOS is not open. Especially in the latest version (Sonoma) they disabled AltServer so now I can’t side load anything. Especially any Mac with a T2 security chip is especially difficult to install unsigned software.
@@chriswestphal26 I hope you realized that I was talking about the previous OS, right? I don't know how Sonoma works on the new chipsets. But that's exactly my point, as long as users are comfortable with it, Apple will continue to do the same.
It is when old people use it. Have you seen the number of Calendar bullshit added to their phones? It’s not a big issue on Android cuz they locked it behind several restrictions… Apple doesn’t like that.
@@sadatnafis2032I owned iPhone 5 but left to android with the launch of the first android the Motorola droid 1 for many reasons. Now I bought a 15 pro max because of usbc titanium and side loading
More people may buy it but Apple will hemorrhage money for losing lightning and sideloading. That being said they will still be a multi trillion dollar company. But although I’m thanking the eu I can certainly say that Apple is not
Ironically the new version of MacOS (Sonoma) removed legacy mail plugins that AltServer relies on to side load apps. AltServer released a statement saying they are aware and are working on a new method to sideload on to iOS.
If Apple finally releases the ability to sideload third-party apps and people start porting Revanced and other stuff to iOS, I'm done with Android. iOS has came a long way and was optimized since day one. Now it even supports game controllers and whatnot. Meanwhile, I always felt like the Android counterpart needs much more processing power and RAM to even compete with iPhone flagships. Android was always a slow, buggy mess. I had the S4, S6, S7E, S8 and S10 and it never changed. They always were blazing fast, however some months later they began to lag and stall. And that given that I am an Android dev and know what I'm doing. I disable things I don't need, leave free space, etc. I even rooted it to gain some controls over the CPU/GPU with a custom kernel. It kinda helped, but still... iOS doesn't need all that and "just works" - fast. With all of that said, Android, especially on Samsung phones, is being massively dumbed down. They removed everything I loved Android for. 3.5mm Jack, IR Blasters, removable batteries, etc. Even Root/Magisk is going away with forced signatures. I really have nothing to loose anymore. They want to compete with iOS, but are not even on the same level. Java will never be as fast as C. All in all... Again... If Apple allows third-party Apps and I see that it will stay that way, I might switch sooner or later. It's kinda funny, because I was a die-hard Android fan.
So, you’re an Android “dev” you say, fusseldieb? What exactly have you “developed?” You think knowing what to disable, some free space and rooting equals a dev? Lmao!!
I'm at the same place... Hell I'm switching to IOS in few months 😢 but I love android. And it's not android's fault that it's loosing its charm but it's OEMs fault that they are killing android.
For real currently confused between iPad pro and samsung S8 , if iPad allowed some ways to download mod apps , then I will go for iPad blindly , only thing I will miss is SD card slot 😢
For me I would like Apple to be more open with its control over the device itself. Stuff like reducing the volume reduction on apps when on calls, active background processes able to work for any app, more settings to customize the experience in general.
I bought an iPad Pro for work and study but I discovered that with a Dual Sense controller it's also an insanely amazing gaming platform. If only Apple allowed us to install emulators.
It would be so funny if in September apple released the new iphone and only the European one had the sideloading feature and the usb C, but lets hope it doesnt come to that.
The side loading feature would have to be worldwide because if someone moves to Europe it would be weird and VPNs and all that stuff, but I can see them doing that for the lighting port
@@lewismaxvaltteri check up on the VPN topic. I have read articles that basically said apple would most likely release this only in EU and make sure VPNs are not reliable in terms of getting access to sideloading. It's sad but I hope it doesn't come to that. At the end of the day there is many sources and most are wrong. It's up to us to decide which seems most plausible
11:24.. Damn right. At least Google is aware of open source idealism and everything associated with that.. Which makes me lean towards Google more generally, but money IS the bottom line..
That’s so BS. By this argument Epic should allow anyone to upload skins and other things without charging anything. Tesla should allow any apps to be installed and so on.
*sigh* there's no need for antivirus on anything and Windows has defender too, Macs not needing an antivirus is a myth, it is required as much as any other device, that being it doesn't need one
Mac's don't get a lot of viruses because they are not the majority of devices. Macs are about 30% of the market while windows is around 68% of the market
If Apple makes it a hassle to sideload apps in Europe, they WILL be in violation of European Law and will be fined for it. They won't be able to escape this time (just like Google won't be able to prevent OEMs from making all their bloatware uninstallable on Android). Their best option will be marketing. And because 99.9% of iOS users are dumb AF, an aggressive marketing campaign to scare them will likely be enough. Heck, I have tech savvy friends who are still iSheep and don't even want Apple to have that possibility on the iPhone because they're scared of "the malware from Android".
“iPhone users are dumb” yet you think the European Union has ever made a legislation that worked. They literally think they have banned memes, look it up. They literally had an open border policy that took back a year later we kept buying oil from Russia for no reason. The eu literally tried to force micro usb to every phone some years earlier. Trust me, the eu will get nowhere with this.
Also don’t fool your self android is just as closed off as iOS, don’t like being able to change the colors fool you. There is built in temple try and literally most aspects of both systems are closed source, don’t story anything you wouldn’t want to be leaked or the government to know on a smartphone in general.
Man, I didn't even know that Epic parodied Apple's own ad to use against them! That's actually hilarious, even if most of Fortnite's player base had never even seen that original ad.
The app stores are a massively monopolistic anti-competitive tech prison where they can control anything anyone makes, down to their policy, or they don't get to exist.
From what I understand the EU law affects products released after march 2024 which means it would affect iOS 18 - but I could be wrong i haven't read the law for a couple months
Nope, it will affect iOS 17. Something, as iOS 17 is in beta right now and will release to the public some time in September when the new iPhone is announced, a beta 1 of iOS 18 will be announced at WWDC 2024 which is usually held in June-July which means the law will go into effect before iOS 18 is announced.
@@EddyGraphicmy guess is the functionality won’t be made available until apple has to… Which means it’ll be a 17.whatever update, Apple might not even mention the function at WWDC
It's also notable that the original 1984 styled advertisement was actually from Apple for their Macintosh and aired during Superbowl XVIII (only the 18th Superbowl! 🏈).
If I had to guess. Side loading will be possible but you’d have to run the ipa file through iTunes or some approved equivalent. Maybe they’ll keep the 7 day resign rule.
If that's how they did it then you could argue that sideloading is technically already on iPhone. I can sign and install any ipa file for 7 days with a non-developer account right now.
Sweet hopefully this will be easier for jailbreaking for future iPhones I miss untethered jailbreaks where even if the battery dies the jailbreak stays without computer
I hope the EU also forces big tech giants to open-source significant portions of their work that directly affects their service's performance, longevity, and maintainability and access of their original and subsequent users.
That would kill off all financial incentive to continue, you understand how asinine this idea would be? When companies inevitably say "to hell with this" and quit doing business, it could cause the already stagnent EU economy to fall even lower.
So, are we finally able to install non-store apps like in Android for iOS or, is this another Apple gimmick “we’ll give you what you ask for, but not really” thing?
So far it's nothing. Apple didn't confirm anything, it's just something they supposedly need to do before March 24 but to this day there's no information about how or even if Apple will implement it (they should but you know how these legal things can be fight in court).
If an iOS device becomes less secure with side loading, it means that iOS has severe know security vulnerabilities (if they're unknown, the manual review process won't catch them either) whose only line of defence is a manual review process. A process that's highly flawed. I've had apps rejected for something that they've not complained about in earlier version, meaning that the one that reviewed the earlier versions, didn't fully review the app. Which makes you question what else they're letting through. If this is Apples approach to security no one should ever use an Apple device because this means Apple's whole design philosophy around security is flawed, and their devices are probably littered with security holes. But more likely, it's just Apple bullshitting the consumers because they want to keep them in the their grasp.
if that were the case Mac would also not allow Sideloading. they are just bullsh*tting same as they do with "BLOCKING THIRD PARTY TRACKING FOR PRIVACY", "GENUINE LIGHTNING ACCESSORIES FOR SECURITY", and "SCANNING YOUR COMPLETE GALLERY FOR CH*LD PO*N FOR CHILD SAFETY". iPhone is the most selling product of Apple and if they can grab cash from any product, it is this one. As people who buy Macs, know why they are doing it and what they need for their workflow, but majority of iPhone users buy iPhones for show off/peer pressure. thus are easy to be fooled and restricted.
I'm 7 months late in watching this video, but I just like to say that I really love your last few statements about corporations just wanting more and more money and that they're not their consumers' friends.
@@AlejandroLZuvic look at whats iOS apps are there they are more pleasure designed UI, faster, more optimized and more features even the apps from google like authenticator has FaceID or TouchID while on Android there nothing such thing…
I hope they will allow sideloading globally because I have an iPad and I want to install happymod or Nintendo emulators without wasting an entire day just for it to disappear in a week
One major problem is that apple has often allowed apps which scam their users to exist on iOS and even allowed them to run ad-campaigns. Their walled garden always have had weeds and poison ivys. And apple sucks in case of side loading even for developers, you can only keep your own developed apps for 30 days, and 90 days in case you pay them $100 per year for testflight.
i wonder if changing the iphone Region on an UK or Canada iphone will work Eg: change it to an EU country as if the phone belongs to one from EU. ive done it now but not seen any new option or addons as of yet in { ios17.3 }.
im a computer head but im a android fan i don't want the EU to do this cause there will be no competition for any smart platform like your tv for a example
It's not a valid point to forbid side-loading as an option because of security. It's like forbidding elections because people might choose wrong. In android world this is an option that the vast majority of users don't even use, but it's still there if it is needed. It's a tool, sometimes a workaround that gives you options you wouldn't have without it.
It seems like people don't actually own their devices as you can only do what Apple allows you to do. EU Privacy/Security requirements are probably even more stringent than the US and even then they realize the importance of allowing people a choice and the USB-C requirement was wise move.
Disagree that Apple needs to cater to the side loading community. Been with Apple since the first iPad; I, nor anyone else that I know, was concerned with side loading either. Also I find it hilarious that Epic tried to say it was a monopoly since there are multiple app stores. Don’t like Apple and restrictions? Go Android lol. Now I’m not sticking up for Apple or Epic or ANY company that massive. However, the things ppl are getting mad about with side loading… that’s so dumb. What you NEED TO BE MAD ABOUT, is that u may have a phone that still works but they no longer have to support those phone. He touched on the right to repair and such. THAT’S what ppl should be mad about. They are literally siphoning your money. All these tech companies are. Can you imagine your great grandmother buying Singer sewing machine (both the price of mobile phones now)… and being told that in 5-8 yrs, it would be useless, even though it was high quality and still worked just fine?
Side loading isn’t even what it used to be on Android anymore as even Google is making it more difficult to side load with each update with the only appeal for me is pirate apps like Showbox which has long since disappeared and even that’s not an issue on iOS at least for me as I downloaded an app called drama flix although it’s full of ads, it’s at least optimised for iOS unlike its Android counterparts.
Honestly I'm not too upset by the idea of scary warning messages as outlined here, people who know what they're doing won't care and just hit OK and people who don't know what they're doing will either do the research or just stop which is the best outcome really
9:00 They will probably realise it with the phones region which you can set at will. Changing it to France for example will deactivate downclocking the device „to save battery life“ or rather why it was banned in France. Because they intentionally worsened the phones over time by software limitations to encourage you to buy a new device.
i think not a lot, as people who really want it would either jailbreak or pick an android phone instead, and as far as i know some apple users actually think its a bad idea (SomeOrdinaryGamers channel has a video about it)
@@Spiderfffun I agree. If actual statistics of the users who wanted all that were present you would realize its a minority. On the other end as much as people don't like it, its simply the core values on which the company was built. As the legal & international pressure continues it would reach a point where we can't differentiate Apple from other makers & competition would be dead
@@SpiderfffunI think it's a bad idea because of all the fragmentation that will arise from the different app stores. If I want an app, I am forced to downlaod its app store and then possibly give identifying information to 3rd parties I don't fully trust will keep my information secure in the event of a breach
9:57 - that's not true at all, free and open source software usually allows for the most freeing experience while usually being the most secure and private alternatives, look at Linux. There's no balance needed. People don't need Apple's "protection", and also, Apple themselves violate people's privacy. The best thing about all of this is that soon the iPhone might have a store like F-Droid where we'll have all sorts of FOSS software available. Maybe we'll even have a good terminal emulator and 3rd-party package managers for iOS, that would be so cool.
What you're saying doesn't go against what he said. There's a balance between ease of use and security and he even explained that Google's approach with Android's sideloading process is indeed a great balance. He doesn't mention Linux because honestly, it's not the point of the video.
Apple isn't going to announce anything untill they are at the deadline, or they have a way to spin it like it was their idea in the first place. Like with the iphone 15's USB C port, we all know it was a forced move, but they certainly talked it up like it was their plan in the first place.
