Iowa-Class Battleships in Operation Desert Storm

As part of Navy Secretary John F. Lehman's effort to build a 600-ship Navy in the 1980s, and in response to the commissioning of Kirov by the Soviet Union, the United States recommissioned all four Iowa-class battleships. On several occasions, battleships were support ships in carrier battle groups, or led their own battleship surface action group. The USS New Jersey saw action bombarding Lebanon in 1983 and 1984, while the USS Missouri and USS Wisconsin fired their 16-inch (406 mm) guns at targets Kuwait and launched missiles during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The USS Wisconsin served as the TLAM strike commander for the Persian Gulf, directing the sequence of launches that marked the opening of Desert Storm, firing a total of 24 TLAMs during the first two days of the campaign.
All four Iowas were decommissioned in the early 1990s, making them the last battleships to see active service. USS Iowa and USS Wisconsin were, until fiscal year 2006, maintained to a standard where they could be rapidly returned to service as fire support vessels, pending the development of a superior fire support vessel.

The Iowa class ships were reactivated as replacement for the aging gun cruisers like the Des Moines class cruisers that still remained. The Iowas were relatively low mileage and it cost less to reactivate and modernize them than to build new cruisers. The US was looking for a counter to the Soviet Kirov class cruisers. What ultimately doomed them was the operating cost and the manpower needed to run them in a navy downsizing after the collapse of the USSR.

It's amazing that the U.S. is the only country smart enough to keep the last of the great dreadnoughts around. Britain, which had dozens of them scrapped them all. They make fantastic museums, and they can always be put back into service in a crunch.

@Omegadoomship
@Omegadoomship 4 года назад
This is just a guess, at the end of WW2, Britain was still licking its wounds and focused more on rebuilding. With resources depleted, the country had to utilize everything they could to rebuild, including scrapping the steel, copper, and other resources from their fleet and other war machines. It was a good source of materials and the world (for the time being) was more focused on keeping the peace after a gruesome war. On the otherside if the world, while the war had left its mark on the Americans, the country was booming with the rekindling of industrial might after the Great Depression. After the war, many ships, fighters and equipment were saved from being scrapped, used primarily as museums but also in reserve. However, many ships were also scrapped as the country was changing. The population boom after the war prompted the need for increased production in vehicles, appliances, and other goods. The materials had to come from somewhere, so many ships, vehicles, and equipment were scrapped. The United States has a lot of equipment left over from its war time production. Unused jeeps, tanks, planes, etc. The country was also exporting a lot of goods to aid the country’s directly affected by the war.

@Reflex Not necessarily. Battleships can tank anti-ship missiles through sheer armor. However, they are outdated in what it costs to maintain them and they’re rather slow compared to nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
@csfelfoldi
@csfelfoldi 4 года назад
@@pcmld2267 That is actually false. Because of the large frame they are faster with their steam engines than nuclear powered carriers and smaller destroyers. Nimitz and Ford carriers top at 30 knots while the Iowa's at 35. Modernized they would have a good viability, they are just too costly for what they do. For instance Chinese destroyers would have second thoughts about ramming US vessels during freedom of navigation exercises if they would be facing 45000 tons of displacement. However spending 2 billion just for that and the occasional shore bombardment would be a bad bargain.
@bootymane9907
@bootymane9907 3 года назад
@@csfelfoldi I think it would be smart to cut ship production in other areas for a year an modernize all battleships adding anti ship missiles modern anti aircraft weapons and something like the long range rounds designed for the Zumwalt but for the battleship should be cheaper too as it doesnt need to be super high tech to fit into the big shells and then when they are done mothball them and whenever China gets really rowdy send them as carrier escorts or in the event of war with a substantial naval power and you can just retire it and recover it when needed because if China did pearl harbor us with a wide sweeping missile and submarine suprise attack then we will end up using the battleships if our backs against the wall so might aswell make them more potent weapons before storing them away

Just as important as the heavy armor, is the thousands of separate water-tight compartments throughout the ship's hull, resembling a bee's honeycomb. You'd need to penetrate and flood enough of these separate areas with water in a sufficient quantity that would overcome the immense pumps that these ships also have available. Sinking a battleship, strangely enough, isn't easy.

I find it entertaining that people call these obsolete. I'm a lover of old weapons the battleship being my favorite machine of war. Why because it's all about it guns. With the updated anti missile gatling gun technology we have today not to mention anti-aircraft technology. Anything that flies would probably not be able to touch it unless they're brave enough to come in closer. No war ship that I know of with standard munitions would stand a chance going head to head with the 16 inch guns. You just can't stop the shells once they're in the air unlike missiles. The battleship in my mind if it were updated with modern defensive technology and a nuclear reactor it would be an excellent fleet defender/ peacekeeper of the sea . And almost unstoppable on the water.

Schaffen hausen That's the old battleship, if it's a new one with anti air capabilities like the Type 45 Destroyer or Arleigh Burke/Zumwalt DDG Technologies it would be a different game entirely. Instead of a carrier which is already so many of them, why not build one or two new battleship with modern tech?! the cost would not be more expensive than a carrier (they need a lot of aircraft --> Hence a lot more money to spend), instead put a massive cruise missile on it and a rail gun.. most of the reason these girls were retired wasn't because they were so much old or obsolete, it was because they were very hungry on manpower. Absolutely in awe of these wonderful ships of another time. Many argue in strategic command that there is no place for these old levithians of older naval times. I disagree because unlike for example our 2 battleships the " HMS prince of wales" and the "Repulse" who were sunk by Japanese naval torpedo aircraft with great loss of life, it was demonstrated in this video how better protected these "battle wagons" are by electronic radar operated air defence systems and drone usage, I also believe in harking back to support for amphibious operations support for marines and army personnel. The protection they employ now would give them the edge over air attack by better radar and satellite Intel compared to what they had in ww1, ww2 and even korean war. Yes I would reinstate the big gun ships possibly with redesigned hulls but still mounting large weapons maybe bigger bore guns than 16inch !!! Love the video the sheer illumination of the sky by the gunfire was like a new sun rising Absolutely enthralled.

2700 lbs.- 25 miles, can't think of a better fear factor than that. You have to stand on the deck of one of these monsters to fully appreciate them. Every time I visit virginia beach I have to make the trip over to norfolk and see the wisconsin. Too bad they never built any of the Montana-class. 920 ft.,72,000 tons 12-16" guns.

collin ohlinger I've heard of rail guns, but aren't they still mostly in the sci-fi realm except for some prototypes? The last time I toured the whisky I was chatting with one of her vets about her usefulness in the modern navy and he told me that the 16" guns could handle enough powder without doing damage to them to increase the range of the guns to 50 - 100 miles. Not sure if he knew what he was talking about but if what he says is true, that alone could make them much more viable. It's hard to believe without them using a different kind of powder being theres only so much room inside the breech of the gun and it doesn't seem like they could fit anymore of the powder they normally use in there.

Better to have lots of smaller craft with railguns than one big ship, its simply more redundant. But yea nothing can beat the cool factor of these bad boys.

RampantFury925 Sure they do, the navy has been testing them for quite some years now. You can even build your own if you have some cash to burn, it really isn't that complicated of a technology despite the fact that it sounds futuristic.

+Carl Miester That makes me think the US military has got lasers now so what would a rail gun and laser bombardment look like? Just for the hell of could imagine a full broadside with 16 inch guns, all the missiles and rockets an Iowa class would have, along with some lasers and rail guns, and every cannon and anti aircraft that ship had firing all at the same time? So much dakka.

And they went all the way down to the 155mm nuke shells with a 2 kiloton yield. In 1958 a fusion warhead was developed and tested, the UCRL Swift. It was 622 mm long, 127 mm diameter, and weighed 43.5 kg. At its test it yielded only 190 tons; it failed to achieve fusion and only the initial fission explosion worked correctly. There are unconfirmed reports that work on similar concepts continued into the 1970s and resulted in a one-kiloton warhead design for 5-inch (127 mm) naval gun rounds; these, however, were never deployed as operational weapons.

Iraq definitely met Americas full military might during the first gulf war. Sea, air and land all at the same time. They didn't get the big guns fired at them again as a reminder of the full might since they retired the battleships in 1991. I was there for the invasion as an infantry door gunner with the 101st. I was outside of Bagdahd during the shock and awe bombing. Impressive sight!
