Do you hear the momentary static every time the SPS-49 radar is pointing that way? I always thought that was cool. A lot of little static in the background, too. Lots of things are transmitting causing that.

+trent8002003 i dont really know if this was considered fall of shot, since they were not shooting beyond the horizon, and the guns were only elevated to maybe 3 degrees. I think fall of shot refers to any range past the horizon where a high spotting point, such as an aircraft or the fire control towers of the standard type BBs built before the war.

+TOY5OLDI3R24 No. Fall of shots mean exactly what it says. Where your shots of shells fall. Doesn't have to be beyond visual range. Can be point blank. You fire a salvo (or a single shot) at 3 or 30 degree elevation at target 3000yds or 40000yds, you still need to observe your fall of shots.

The last two of these were retired after Desert Storm in favor of guided missile destroyers. What isn't widely known both of the Iowa's used in Operation Desert Storm, the USS Wisconsin and the USS Missouri, fired only 52 Tomahawk missiles during the campaign. However, they fired 1383 rounds through both ship's 16inch guns. So the guns were not completely obsolete.

What isn't actually well known is that the original fire control system were just as effective as any modern stuff they could have installed, so they just left them as is. That's how accurate these guns control systems were. It should be noted that it is specifically the control mechanisms, and not the guns themselves. Those had poor accuracy at their longer ranges, but that's a gun thing, and not an aiming thing. This issue would persist, only being rectified by much more modern guided shells, by which time battleships we're now museums.

Served aboard her in '69... saw all this from 90 feet away! One 16-inch volley blew a guy's Dixie cap off from three levels down! One awesome ship! Was there when we used the 16-inchers to bombard San Clemente Island off CA coast. I think my ears are still ringing even though we all used cotton to muffle the blast! :-) -- Blessings, John Donahue, LT (jg), USN

judging on the splashes, this is indeed a assurance that this is the USS New jersey since the splashes are blue, and the New jersey used blue dye for its shots to tell the difference between the ships who is shooting where to accurately adjust fire.

I just visited the USS New Jersey this past Sunday (writing this on 29 April 2019). The ship has been permanently docked at Camden, New Jersey as a museum ship since 2001. They’ve kept it in good condition, and most of the ship’s original equipment is still intact and operable. Of course, the guns are not fired now, but it was a very cool experience to be on board.

went on a tour of her today. impressive is an understatement. 1 16in gun barrel weighs 107 tons entire turret and basket 2200 tons.

And just to put that in perspective a pickup truck is about 2 tons, so the 16" barrel alone weighs close to 50 trucks. Another fun and impressive stat: the F1 engines on the Saturn V rocket dumped out 15 tons of fuel every second... so 7 pickup trucks every second flying out of the engine... and there were FIVE engines running all at once. We used to build some cool shit in this country...

I served 2 years on the Big J, 5/82-5/84. got to watch these 16"ers a few times when not on watch or GQ in the Engineroom. Awesome sight. When in Beirut for NGFS for 24th MAU,, we were at Condition 3 and on February 8th we let loose 288 rounds. Was at Battle Stations for 7 hours.

Built a scale model of her when I was small. It has been my favorite ship ever since. I followed her life through her deployment off the coast of Beirut in 1983 right through to today. Miss battleship days.

What puzzles me is that the Iowas guns could cover 60% of the Korean peninsular around 55% of the Vietnamese peninsula and around 45---50 % of the targets in the Desert Storm action those 16 inch guns and the variety of shells used still made them a potent weapon

Fun fact: USS _New Jersey_ (BB-62) is officially the fastest battleship ever built. When _New Jersey_ was reactivated for Vietnam she ran speed trials and clocked 35.7 knots over the measured course.

And so these ships and their 16 inch guns are all decommissioned. Their range is 27 miles, but newer guns have ranges from 63 to 100 miles with GPS targeting. Amazing stuff. But these ships are certainly cool and should all be turned into museum exhibits around the country like the battleship Texas.

Ron I was crew member on the big j when this was filmed I think I recall us doing this. I was proud of my ship I was in hardest divisions deck dept First division This movie brings back fond memories. It was very very loud. My job was helmsman when guns were fired. john Rees - That is a Phalanx CIWS (Close-In Weapon System). It is an automated anti-ship missile defensive platform consisting of a Vulcan M61 20mm gatling autocannon that fires approximately 4500 rounds per minute and uses radar for targeting.

It's still amazes me on what countries can develop during wartime. I absolutely love the battleships. Some of the technology that they were using back then is unbelievable. Most people don't realize that the battleships had what some people are calling the first guidance computers. They would put in all the relative information and the fire solution would be calculated and they then would know where the point and raise and lower the barrel. Think about where we would be in aviation if it was not for world war I and world war II. We went from planes that couldn't fly any higher than 5 or 6,000 ft to planes that would why five times higher and a hundred times faster than what was ever believed possible. When you just look at the ships this country has taken into war it amazes me that anyone would want to test us. Just look at today that battleships are at museums and that we now have nuclear power aircraft carriers. Even today nobody has as much firepower as we do with just one carrier. Right now the United States is the only country who has a nuclear power aircraft carrier. And if it wasn't for war we would never have seen this. I'm pretty sure that if the war did not happen that some of these remarkable inventions would happen but it would take a lot longer to see the final product. God bless America and God bless all the men and women who have defended our rights.

These babies were already being built when we went to war. _New Jersey_ was launched December 7th, 1942. Exactly a year after Pearl Harbor.

The Iowa class battleships are incredible feats of engineering. They are marvelous in design and function. Just the sight of these monstrosities is a powerful deterrent to enemy aggression and their firepower is awesome! Let us resurrect these war machines out of museums and revive our Navy, the most powerful Navy in the World!

+john Rees : That is a Phalanx Close In Weapons System made by a joint operation of BAE systems and General Electric. It mounts one 7.62 calibre Minigun, and fires 4500 rounds per minute. Automated defense solutions are obtained via radar contact.

how long does it take to load all 3 barrels in one turret? and those shells aren't as fast as some people think. they have a speed of 1900 mph and a range of 24 miles. god help anyone on the receiving end of those guns

Every single barrel has its own loading system, with a loading time of about 30 seconds.

Alexander Nikolis so 9-12 barrels for 1 ship, so at 30 seconds reloading time for each pipe in my opinion they could fire continuously but at a slow rate

Yes pretty much. With 9 barrels and 30 second reload time for each, that's about 18 shells per minute!

That's so cool that you can see the splashes... ON THE HORIZON! One thing though - I thought that you couldn't be anywhere near the guns when they were fired due to overpressure. I know, there were men manning the AA mounts while the guns were fired in war, but they had special precautions. Am I misinformed?

I remember when I was in high school they had the New Jersey over in Vietnam. And they fired 30 straight days. And did not take one hit from the North Vietnamese. Probably scared s******* of it. Sometimes I think they should bring the battleships back. Give people warning shots. I don't know. I just know it's a bad boat. Went on her 1986 at the Portland Rose festival. That boat was huge. The New Jersey confire 23 miles away.

Such a beast of a warship, no wonder we brought her out time and time again. You don't even need to fire the guns just point them at the enemy and give them something to fear. Got to sleep over on this ship when I was young for scouts and to this day I remember that trip, now I still live like 30 minutes from her and wonder if those shells can hit me from Camden.

Pretty long, advances in gunpowder technology even allowed the 16 inchers to fire about 1500 rounds (whereas it conventionally used to be no more than about 300 rounds).

I witnessed all of this as a phone talker for the Weps Officer, USS NEW JERSEY BB-62. You needed to brace yourself up there above the bridge. The first firing was a spotting round. The second firing was all of 'em, and the wind was sucked out of your nose. You better grab on to something, or you're going to be blown down to the deck, with everyone laughing at you (I know this because the first time as a phone talker for the Weps Officer, I was briefed as to what to do during a firing, which was held on and duck behind something sturdy or metal. Having done that for the first round, I didn't think that was too bad. The second firing threw me to the deck, lost my sound powered headphones and mike, and couldn't breathe for a few seconds. I was assigned to the Weapons Department's Admin Office.

I was in Viet Nam and knew guys who received fore support from battleship gunnery. They said there was nothing to match their ability to dig in and get deep installations.

If you could fit a RAIL GUN onto the hull which can hit targets 200 miles away Then the keeping of one or two battleships would be an asset The shear cost of maintaining these vessels would then be viable. In my opinion the worlds trouble spots are primarily the Middle East and North Korea the range of large guns would be handy for fire support

There were Tomahawks and Cruise missiles on the ship. The range of the 16 inch guns is 20 miles and were used off Beirut after the barrack's bombing.

3:48 That’s what we need to have in the Navy. These ships scared the shit out of many people even though they were old. The huge ass guns and brute strength they had. Just imagine all of these upgraded ships having some sort of kamikaze style attack these days with the phalanx (sea-wizz), the missiles and all. These ships might be too expensive for the Navy to operate, but you know....these ships is what everyone in the world knew of the Navy back in the day. This is what I wanted to do when I was a 17 year old kid. When I found out that they all got decommissioned, my heart sank. So I joined the Marine Corps. Now I’m retired and wished we had some of their artillery in Iraq..... Semper USMC / Retired

I was on the New Jersey Battleship when it came to the Rose Festival in Portland Oregon in 1983 I think it was big boat I remember when I was in high school in the sixties that New Jersey fired 30 days non stop in Vietnam scared the hell out of North Vietnamese
