It's very easy to know where you are in Iowa when looking at county highway signs. The first letter indicates where you are in the state. Example with May City that fooled you, is that the letter A tells you you're close to the Minnesota border on an east west road. East west roads start at A and go through J (I is skipped) and north south roads start at K (in the west) and end at Z in the east (skipping O, Q and U). Thus Osceola county is not near the town of Osceola (which is in Clarke County) it's in Northern Iowa (actually NW in this case). Also Bever is pronounced like the animal. Hopefully that would help anyone that wants to try this and not get incredibly frustrated. (Unless you get gravel roads in the middle of nowhere and there are a bunch.) FYI I'm the one that is has the best time.

*slaps the roof of Iowa* "You can fit so many Valleys in this bad boy." My great grandparents lived in Iowa so I'd visit at least once a year growing up. One vivid memory I have is when we tried to visit the ice cave in Bixby State Preserve but we got severely lost and ended up driving through an Amish settlement. Ah, the early 2000's before smartphone navigation...

The May City round was hysterical. Why on earth is there no street view on the main road 😂. I googled it and I don’t know how to explain where it is but it’s very far from Oceola the city. I’ve been to Iowa once. My grandmother was born in Sioux City randomly for some reason. I love the Des Moines state Capitol building. My favorite of the 30 Capitol buildings I’ve been to.

My only Iowan experiences have been in the Driftless Area, visited Dyersville a few times when I was really young, Dubuque in 2021 and Effigy Mounds National Monument & Pikes Peak State Park in 2022. All great places! Iowa is a surprisingly fun map to play. Just memorize the area codes, find a town name, and let your scanning abilities guide you to a solid time.

Lived in Iowa City for two years. I was *convinced* that's where round 3 was at first instead of Cedar Rapids until you got to the downtown area. Interesting that they look so similar being sister cities with one another.

I've only been one county into Iowa, Osceola County in the northwest corner (I have some distant relatives there, and once went to a family reunion just over the border in Worthington, Minnesota). We only went to Sibley, the Osceola County seat.

Iowa is the 18th flattest state, Kansas is the 7th. The few locations you see on here will trick you but Iowa can be surprisingly hilly in many areas.

The closest thing Iowa has to a "valley" is a pothole. I wonder, in a list of states easiest to bike across, where Iowa would rank? I’m guessing 1.

Someone hasn't heard of the driftless area. And Iowa isn't that flat, it's the 18th flattest state, and RAGBRAI riders will tell you it's not flat, much less the easiest state to bike across.
