One could make a strong argument for Dubuque being Iowa's most unique city. What's undebatable is that Dubuque is the oldest city in Iowa, as it was a city before Iowa was a state. To this day, Dubuque remains to be an attractive place to live and to visit.

Anthony Birch lol a bunch of my cousins grew up there too and they used to come out to Chicago for the summer when we were kids. They all couldn’t wait to get out of Dubuque just like you said. Every time I went there though I loved it. It’s got a definite charm to it
@anthonybirch6291

@@oldmanhendo7183 It's definitely not a lovely big city but it's grown to have music festivals every weekend in the summer. City council has done a lot to grow the city and now there is plenty to do if you're willing to look for it. Usually the people that are left to complain how boring it is are also to the kind of people who can't see the forest for the trees.

@oldmanhendo7183 3 года назад
@@anthonybirch6291 that’s awesome man. Where do they typically have the music festivals in the summer? Also though, a lot of my family that still live out there said it has gotten kind of ghetto over the years. I know my cousins grew up on Jackson street right across from a little park and apparently there was a big meth problem over there
@anthonybirch6291
@anthonybirch6291 3 года назад
@@oldmanhendo7183 the festival is on main street at the town clock. As long as I've been alive that area has always been the ghetto. I know because I grew up down there and they tore down my neighborhood for the b branch project. Meth was a huge issue back in the late 90's and early 00's. Felt like there was a meth lab bust in the newspaper every week. Used to say we were know for the three C's; corn, casinos, and crystal meth. But currently I'd say it's no worse than any other city

@@anthonybirch6291 I gotcha. I didn’t realize their specific area was the ghetto, but that makes sense 😂. Yea man, it’s a really cool town though. Do you know if they’re still having the festival this year?

My mother was born and raised there. I remember visiting as a kid. Watching the trains from the Fengler Street overpass. Watching river traffic go through the locks from the dam and the lookout in Eagle Point Park. My Uncle still lives there near Holy Trinity Church on Rhomberg. He worked at the pack. My grand father worked at a butcher shop called Trenkle's. My mother was born in an apartment above the shop. We would always go to the Ham House, Eagle Point Park and ride the Fenelon Place Elevator. There was always something to do and see. It's a great city and I love it! Thanks for posting this!

Edit: One thing that helps DBQ with its lack of interstate access is 4-lane Highway 151 which helps to link it to Cedar Rapids, IA and I-380, Madison, WI and points east. Another good one. I grew up in Dubuque. Your drive went past two of my homes, my elementary school and Loras (graduated 1974) I have many good memories of DBQ and although I couldn’t wait to leave, always love returning to visit relatives and friends. Unfortunately your video misses many of the spectacular views from Eagle Point Park in the north end of the city and Grandview Park at the south end where people enter from the airport or the highway coming from the Quad Cities or Cedar Rapids. The colleges and universities are such a major part of the make-up of the town, but were pretty much an afterthought in your video. The missed mention of the Cathedral, Julian Dubuque’s Grave as well as Wahlert HS was disappointing. I did enjoy your video though. Am actually surprised this popped up in my feed, as I now live in Japan. Hi to any friends or relatives that might read this! SH

Fun fact.... Dubuque was originally part of Illinois. When Iowa became a state, we were adopted over since the Mississippi river was such an obvious boarder between the two states. This makes Dubuque a city which predates the state itself, the oldest city in Iowa, and one of the first settlements west of the Mississippi as well. See, fun.

Much larger small town than all the others I've seen here. With all the hills and trees, it appears even bigger. The large downtown area maintained all the buildings from the 1800's very well. Take away the cement streets and a couple large parking garages, a guy from the 1800's could navigate as well today as he did back in the day. He could visit the same house he grew up in, the church he payed into the coffers and court house he paid a fine in. This town is big enough that residents are offered a good lifestyle. I would imagine there is even an airport serving other places such as Chicago Midway as example.

I was raised, and still love living near Dubuque. Not because of it's farm-friendly people, but because of it's unique history. Every turn I navigate there's history there. Just getting around a metro you see acres of franchises, no history. Oh, there's another starbucks, wait didn't we just see one 3 minutes ago? You don't see that in Dubuque and you appreciate it more.

An error in your video. Dubuque has 3 High Schools! You forget Wahlert High School. It is a Catholic High School. It was built before Hempstead was. Also "Dubuque High School" is more known in name as "Senior High School". I was born and raised in Dubuque. Everyone I know has always known the "Senior" name of that high school. I went to one year at Wahlert before moving out of town.

You mention several times about the lack of interstate highways. US 151 is 4 lane from Cedar Rapids to Madison WI and US 61 is 4 lane from I-80 at Davenport to Dubuque.

I currently live in Marion Iowa... Work in Cedar Rapids Iowa @ O'Reilly Auto Parts and drive There Dubuque Route... I drive to Dubuque 2 times a day... That's 300 miles a day ... You drove past One of the O'Reilly Auto parts stores I deliver to and provide services for on the route I drive For them..... Plus I also used to live in Dubuque for almost 2 years when I was in my teens and I'm 37 years old now... Beautiful Historic City all year round but my favorite time of year Is Fall with all the different Colors of leaves on trees in and Around Dubuque Iowa... There's also lots of exposed limestone... Mines of spain is one of my favorite places to go hiking and visit Julian Dubuque monument which sits high on top a limestone backbone ridge that overlooks the Mississippi River... The view from up there is Amazingly Breathtaking you can see for miles... Also really beautiful during the fall seeing all the different colors throughout the Mississippi river valley...

My home town! If you want to see a steep hill, here it is. The steepest hill in Dubuque and quite possibly the entire state of Iowa! According to an article in the February 12, 2012 Telegraph Herald, the steepest street in Dubuque is Montcrest with a 22-percent grade! Just don't try to go up or down it during the winter!

Stunning architecture! I want to do a cross country road trip this summer and I think Dubuque might be on my list. As a cyclist, the hills look challenging! I don't like fast moving one way streets in downtowns, though. Hostile for pedestrians.

If you want to see steep hills, go to Duluth outside the opposite corner of Wisconsin from Dubuque in Minnesota by Lake Superior. Those hills are twice the size of the ones in Dubuque. In Wisconsin it easy to get those 2 cities mixed up.

You didn’t mention the Julien Dubuque bridge, which is the longest bridge in Iowa and connects downtown Dubuque with downtown East Dubuque, IL. It has a protected path for pedestrians and bikes, meaning if you’re feeling a little ambitious (remember, it’s the longest!) you could walk or bike across state lines from one downtown to the next. Most bridges over the Mississippi either aren’t walkable or start/end somewhere you’d never walk to anyway.

Cool video, but the dashboard cam doesn't give proper justice to how steep some of those hills are. That shot early in the video is going down third street near Mercy hospital just to name one example. And I do mean down.
@ChrisHarden
@ChrisHarden 3 года назад
It's not a dash cam, but thanks. Also, no matter how great a camera is, do cameras ever do any view much justice? It's always going to be more telling in person, no matter what. I've driven in Pittsburgh some, and that's a city with plenty of steep hills. I compare that third street hill to being just as steep as some of those.
@kencummings953

@@ChrisHarden Pittsburgh is on my bucket list. If you want a big city with some steep hills try Nashville. Fun fact. When my dad (still alive) was growing up in the fifties the boys in the neighborhood would ride flexible flyers down that hill in the winter. Traffic was a little more sparse in those days.
