www.powerbookme... - This is the very first iPad 2 teardown video. This video documents opening the iPad 2 for the first time. #ipadrepair #diy #powerbookmedic
I love the way you dive in! You are fearless buddy. I would be a nervous wreck not knowing what I was getting myself into. Thank you for being my guinea pig. Your videos are ALWAYS top notch.
Nice video. I just repaired my iPhone 4S tonight. Needed a new data port dock. Those screws are small. You do repairs too? I'm an appliance repair business owner and have thought about getting into the pads and smart phones.
@Bananas138 On older models it forced the application to close and took to the Springboard (Jobs described it as an "anti panic button" because if you were lost in some submenu and didn't know how to come out you only had to press it to come back to the home screen) On newer models with iOS 4 (iPhone 3GS/4, iPad 2 and newer iPod Touch) it has the same functionality but keeps the application alive in background so you can come back to the app by double clicking the Home button
Just a tip to people watching, never do this without heat. It IS possible, but much more risky and difficult. From the looks of it this iPad may have been opened previously, the adhesive is normally much tougher. Just repaired one of these a week ago (I work in a repair shop) and without heat it would have been hell. Always use heat, and if you can't heat it I'd recommend having a professional do it. But this method will still work, again, it's more risky and difficult. Anyways, have fun guys! (And still a nice video man!)
I was going to say....I found 2 at the town dump, they both charged right up but without the password they're useless so.... I attempted to disassemble one of them with out googling first LOL...No, LOL and Hahahehe....I'll be vacuuming sparkles of glass for a week. So, 'Heat' is the answer! Now I know and thank you very much. I was kind of hoping for an SSD , something useful....No joy, typical Apple LOL :)
@@Keving3 Yeah there isn't really anything salvageable inside unless you are a nut for DIY linux projects haha! Heat is definitely very useful though, will soften up the glue (and parts as well slightly, I suppose) and make screen removal, battery removal etc.. a lot easier! Like 140F or quite spicy but not instantly burning to the touch is a great temp to work with IMO. Just make sure your device is off! 😆
@@Rock_Appreciator I'm saving the batteries for the next time the power goes out, one of those will run a 5" computer fan for a week if it happens in the summertime. Another one will blind you for a couple weeks if you alligator clip it to one of those LED flashlight arrays, great for reading a book when there's no lights ...... (half our readers: What's a book?) In the mean time, given all the issues with Li/Ion batteries (especially ones that have been pried out of iPads) I'm storing them in a Pyrex bowl so if they blow up I won't lose my house :)
@@Keving3 Yeah, those are some powerful batteries, glad you're getting some use out of it. Nice one putting in a Pyrex. You're probably right, half the viewers here have only read books for mandatory school assignments and nothing else 😆
It always makes me happy to see someone revitalize some old hardware, much better than being in a landfill or running in an office for no reason. Some of my favorite projects of all time have consisted of random machines and scrap parts, haha!
This ipad was previously opened. this is the reason you opened it so easily ! using metal knifes there is very much risk of glass cracking, do not try this if your ipad was never opened before.
I did an iPad 2 years ago... super-careful; I had the heat gun on along side the thermal-readout gun, carefully monitoring with all the shiny flat tools, screwdrivers, and plastic wedges all laid-out like an exotic surgical operation... and the inquisition light. But that was for my sister! My iPad Mini (daily driver and using Hangouts for Wifi calling) was shattered... and acting erratic because of it... yet I was nervous to proceed on it until watching this guy with great confidence just "go at it" without much concern. A lot of these have too much talk... this, for me, was just right... and yeah guys, remember: Glass is rigid. You try to bend it... it will crack!! (What is the deal with some of these ppl saying they were using his approach and crack? Yeah, I used the heat gun on this one too... It super-helps.
And yes... I have an iPad Mini Original! (uno. One) -Now, if there's a tutorial to easily swap out nd upgrade the memory, I'm game! I've seen how it is easy for iPhones... not sure why an iPad is harder? I have seem one guy do the heat gun for 4 minus straight on a video... and then pop out iPad memory with like 28 little soldeed "dot" connections on the back... how strange is that? NEver seen this type of memory. Certainly doesn't look like it was designed to be replaced and soldering such a micro-dot solder array is a bit... intimidating when you want to do this very evenly and not "overcook" one of your memory sections... @ToughGamingSupport - This was the very first take apart. This video was made about 15 minutes after purchase on launch day and almost no one had been in these yet. It's understandable to be a little nervous.
the cable that is attached to the glass next to the home button is the wifi. And for 3g devices there are two cables attached along the top next to each side of the front facing camera as well as the wifi at the bottom.
@iManiaDK - As we were the first to open up the iPad 2 and as we had not been in the iPad 2 previously, the wi-fi cable did tear in the disassembly process as did one of the battery cells. That is sometimes the price you pay to be the first to take apart a gadget.
i tore the wifi antenna off mine too, and there was a little brass colored thing stuck to the digitizer like in this video--the wifi antenna tears off before you know it has --you should put a text box on your video explaining this and how to avoid it
So since 2011 have you seen anyway to buy a 16GB and just upgrade it to higher GB or Ram? i am sure i am not the only one interested in knowing this ! I'M A SAD 16GB OWNER LOL
Many people say that my iPad 2 is not fixable, but deep inside me I know it can be repaired. The only intact thing that probably works is the motherboard. I'll try to swap the motherboard with another iPad 2 (same model A1395) and I hope that it will work because there are lots of photos, videos, games and memories from my childhood. (I destroyed it when I got super angry as a kid.) Also can I swap the motherboard from the white bezel iPad to the black bezel version? (They are both A1395.) I hope that it will work.
Looks super hard( is it possible to put back the glass to that it would look like new?( p.s I really suggest you not to touch motherboard with that metal priming tool, use plastic. Regards
great video extremely helpful! is it possible for you to make a video specifically for fixing the volume/power button flex cable only? As I was replacing my digitizer, I must have accidently ripped the cable as I pried the digitizer off =[ i have seen the ifixit tutorial, but it is only for the gsm version, but I have the cdma version so I dont think that the tutorial is very helpful. THANKS!
so the face plate is just held on by tape? i dropped mine a few time and dinged the corners a little. just trying to see if i can bang them back better so the plastic trim around the faceplate don't look like they are misaligned.
Hi there, I´ve been wondering - would it be possible to install the "new iPad´s" battery into iPad 2? may be a stupid question, but I wasn´t able to find any answer for this anywhere. Thanks for your time
I have the exact same issue. A short drop to a hard floor (which can easily put 20+ g's on a device). Small ding on the corner. iPad worked fine until the battery died and won't accept a charge from any source I've tried. (The original Apple and best/highest current charger unfortunately is burnt out.). I've opened it, hoping for the small chance of an easy solution like a detached cable but I see nothing helpful. It is a first gen iPad and repair is unlikely affordable, so I'd love suggestions.
i dropped mine a few feet and now the screen is messed up, can you show how to fix it? reconnecting the video cable inside? and do you have the reassembling video? thanks!
great vid and thanks for sharing, no offense why do you not wear gloves whehn handling components to stop greases getiing onto connections? i always wear then, it elimates finger prints on lcd's and greasy marks on ribbons etc? great vid though, thanks
Hello thank you for the video. I wanted to ask you if I were to transfer my logic board(memory unit) onto a fresh iPad 2 can it be accomplished ? My iPad 2 is completely warped, screens don’t flush and it’s jailbroken so I can’t back it up on iTunes and I have to spend more money for the lcd replacement than what the device is even worth at this point. Any answer is appreciated, thank you. Both iPads are 16gb only, no carrier.
There is not a memory module you can just transfer over. The memory is soldered to the board, so any transfer would require moving over the chips that are soldered to the board. We've never moved the chips over ourselves, so I couldn't say beyond that.
Powerbook Medic ouch, that sounds very challenging. I figured the memory was in the logic board so I would swap it with another iPad 2 and have my memory. It’s okay, thank you so much for the quick response! You’ve been very helpful.
Does the iPad connect to the computer? If so then you could just back it up to the computer and then restore it to the other iPad. For some reason I assuming the iPad was completely dead and was giving you a worst case.
Powerbook Medic oh aha no it’s working. It has a faulty lcd but I’m still able to see and use it. iTunes won’t restore it due to the device being jailbroken, unfortunately. I wanted to try swapping the logic board into a better iPad 2 because my iPad is so warped the digitizer is sticking out, waving it’s white flag.
I think I am staying away from repairing ipad 2 just like the ipod touch 4g... untill atleast a year till i can get more experience with these devices that are hell to put back together!
i might have gotten some water inside it or something but i woke up and my ipad was freaking out, the home button randomly activates and does stuff, i got it in rice right now i dont know what else to do, as a last resort could you fix it? and what would be the price range?
Hey buddy, I have a question for you.. My iPad 2 Wifi doesnt work.. I just cant select the WiFi option (it is in grey), they just diagnosed it was something with the WiFi card or something.. It was not the flex (nor the antenna i guess).. I want you to help me guessing what was that so i Can buy a Replacement. It was in a shape of a rectangle and had some circuits on it, it was a small piece.. you have idea what it could be?
I can't imagine what would happen if I had to take this whole thing apart. I can't hardly put together a Acer laptop without breaking a connector or stripping a screw.
