What I like about the iPad is that allows you to concentrate on one task at a time. That way there is no distraction. The iPad is my favorite tech of all time.
I just want to be able to resize windows or transfer files / download in the background without interrupting the process. Something we’ve been able to do on devices since the 1990’s.
100% this. My iPad is my "single task computer". When I hear people moan that "iPadOS is too limited, put macOS on the iPad already" I just want to scream "nooooooo!". I honestly wouldn't use an iPad if it was just a macOS device with a touch screen. I like it limits me as it prevents distractions. In a weird way it reminds me of when I first used computers back in the late 80s were they could only really do one thing at a time due to limited power and screen resolution. Now obviously those two things are not an issue on the iPad but the way iPadOS is designed to work helps me work in the same way and I absolutely _love_ it. I understand other people hate how "limited" iPadOS is but to me _its_ limitations give _me_ freedom to just focus on a single task and I love it for that.
I appreciate your perspective. Far too often we just hear the repeated “consensus” that iPad OS sucks, but you’re the first exploring how effectively you can use its potential.
I really enjoy your videos! Most people just have repeated what the popular consensus has been with iPad, which I understand. Few have documented it. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Hi ya - I needed to experience an iPad first hand to decide for myself what it was all about . As I wrapped up by saying, it’s not perfect, but it is bloody good 👊🏻
@@DavidLewisTechI can’t agree more with you. I have found that it works well for me and what I do. I need another tool, I can use my MacBook Pro. Until then, it will serve as my desktop computer. People have to be ok with what works best for them.
Practical and real life experience, without benchmarks. I upgraded to ipad M4 13 from iPad M2 12.9, the difference is immersive for me. I use MBP 14 with external display for spreadsheets and analytics. I use iPad m4 13 more than MBP, I use mainly for preparing training materials, research and planning.
I think it is incredibly admirable how you understand yourself as a person that doesn't like change but still did so even if it is something outside of what you're used to. I very much appreciate that effort and change that you allowed yourself to make.
Yup - I know my weaknesses and knew I needed to try and face them. I working now and writing this on a train coming out of London which I would never have done before…a new man!
Hi David, Enjoy your content. I scoff at people that say the iPad is just a media consumption device. I’m in corporate sales and run my business on my iPad. Great in so many ways and in so many locations and situations. It’s a work horse.
Couldn’t agree more. David’s approach is so refreshing. He’s showing people how to maximise the potential from the iPad and really enjoy it in the process.
I so agree! I recently upgraded and consolidated my iPad to the M4 11in and I love the compact size (although some may benefit from the larger screen), the snappiness, everything just works and so smoothly. I dare say that the new Magic Keyboard, although notoriously overpriced, is my favorite typing experience ever. Together (I do not use Apple Pencil so cannot report on that), they feel really premium, they work, and the function keys have made my life so much better. It is proving to be my new favorite work and play machine as well. I have not been using my MacBook M3 as much, and I do not mind! Glad to see that you also have enjoyed the iPad workflow. Wishing you and the community the best.
Hi there Albert - yeah, I was late to the party but I’m fast becoming a paid up member of the iPad Pro club. Typing on the Magic Keyboard now and it is insanely comfortable to work on 👍🏻
Really great vid! I agree on the viewpoint that working with an iPad feels refreshing and inviting! I recently got an iPad mini (6th gen) (I picked the mini mainly because of the portability) as an early birthday gift this month and I've been using that for all my work on doing artwork as opposed to sitting on my desk using a Mac and my huge Huion drawing tablet everyday. It was truly a refreshing experience to draw on an iPad and stay away from my messy desk, I either keep working in the living room sitting on the couch or in my bedroom. This refreshing feel makes me get out of art block a lot more due to the way the workflow feels. Only time I use my desk setup is if I do need to use my huge tablet if I wanted to be more accurate with my line strokes, a huge drawing space, etc. I still use my laptop sometimes though for certain tasks like 3d modelling in Blender or use Photoshop for doing effects on my artwork, but overhaul I adopted my workflow to keep drawing on an iPad as opposed to using my giant Huion tablet and bulky Mac desk setup. Again, really great video here to listen! 💙
Hi there - it seems I hit a nerve with this video. It suddenly dawned on me how free I felt when using the iPad. I am no less productive, if anything because of the renewed vigour I am even more productive. Yes, there are a few workarounds, but, on the whole life on an iPad is great and I am glad I tested the water. Thanks for watching and commenting.
There's definitely something in the sense of freedom an iPad gives. Organising spaces with apps leads to better focus and energy, which says a lot about the way we relate to our devices. I've run a laptop as a desktop replacement for over a decade but never enjoyed using it out in public as it looks like I'm working and disengaged from my surroundings. The same workflows on an iPad may occasionally be less comprehensive and efficient, but tend to feel more relaxed and enjoyable. To the point that want to get away from the desk more and explore new ways of doing things. We're in very privileged times where we can use a range of devices and not be stuck in an office and that's the original promise of technology: more freedom, connection and creativity.
Hi Paul - I hope you’ve had a great week. I used the word liberated in the video, and it has truly done just that. I think for the reasons you’ve explained that it has encouraged me to be more free from the studio. I feel fresher because of it. I spent a small fortune, but it’s been money well spent…
@@DavidLewisTech Agreed. I also went for the 1TB option and thought I could have upgraded my MBP for about the same price, but that constant need for speed doesn't really change the way we work, just promises to do things faster and we end up squandering the saved time at the same desk doing the same things. This feels like a paradigm shift. Somehow, getting work done has more of an instant sense of focus because you have to make intentional choices between apps.
The iPad Pro is the device I use more than any other. Right from when I first wake up it is my news device, information centre and entertainment device as I get dressed and have breakfast. Then I take off the Smart Folio case and put on Magic Keyboard and it is my work device to use wherever I go and whatever I am doing. It may be on my desk, on my lap on the sofa, on dinning room table, or in the car as I charge my Tesla. This last week it was even in a photo hide while I waited to take wildlife photographs. Add the Apple Pencil and I am editing my photos on the iPad. Then off to play music and it is on my music stand with music manuscript which I can annotate with the Apple Pencil. A typical day for me and my iPad- I generally use 10+ hours per day.
Hey David, you can actually resize each window when you’re in Stage Manager. I’m sure you knew that already but just throwing it out there. But in this video, you’ve highlighted something I didn’t even realise - that using my iPad Pro is actually very distraction free. I don’t know why I didn’t even notice it!! It’s so subtle.
Starting to get used to it, some insecurities still linger like when printing a document you don’t see on the doc a printer icon showing up confirming that it’s actually doing the job. Also not perfect, I hit a snag trying to use WiFi by connecting to the hotspot of my iPhone 14. It shows it recognizing the hotspot but falls short of completing the connection
Well, my workflow consist of attaching the iPad to a portable monitor when away from the desk... I think combination of an iPad with a portable monitor is the best way to go about improving the iPad workflow. And when I'm at my desk... I use the Mac.
Good video, I agree with you as I use 2018 IPP just in the same way. But that USB/Thunderbolt port is only as fast as the device you connect to it. The Anker dock you’re showing is a USB3 device with transfer rate of 10Gbps shared between all devices connected to it (except for video I think). The data off SD cards will transfer at a speed of roughly 900Mbps.
Do me a favour, with the external display try to hook up an external webcam/mic and do some calls on FaceTime, zoom and teams. I experience a great many problems doing this, but your experience may differ. I totally get the freedom the iPad gives you, but the MacBook Air also offers that, perhaps not to the same degree. I agree it can really help with focus, especially for creative tasks, or formulating ideas. And it is such a beautiful device, you just want to touch it. I’m less forgiving of the limitations than you, but my needs are quite different, so while I absolutely love it, I’m sometimes frustrated by it too. I still dream that it’ll get some of the kinks ironed out over time.
Hey Paul, sorry I've only just seen this message, and I shot the A-roll for the video yesterday... Regarding the MBA, I'm considering featuring this in a future video, as I've neglected it, and it is an amazing bit of kit. Great to hear from you again, I hope all is well. 👍🏻
Four days in on a new 11inch iPad Pro and I fully concur with your comments. I’m amazed how many “influencers” and supposed experts are putting the new IPad Pros downs and completely failing to comment on the possibilities the Thunderbolt port opens up for content creators. One question, have you tried connecting a power bank to Apple keyboard to power the iPad pro and external drive?
Hi David, The thunderbolt port on the iPad Pro ended up being the deciding factor over the 2024 Air for me. I’ve tried an SSD (m.2 in a thunderbolt nvme enclosure) connected to the thunderbolt port of the iPad Pro too and it works great. It’s insane after data transfer on my previous setup (9.7 inch IPad Pro and Samsung T5 connected via the lightning port).
The only thing I don't like about the iPad 13 is the display size. I would love to see a display of 14.5 inches. The current 12.9-inch display is fairly small because it has a 4:3 aspect ratio, and don't get me wrong. As a person who bought their first PC back in 1995, my first monitor on the 80386 I had was a 14-inch 4:3 CRT. I love the 4:3 format, in fact, in my personal opinion, it's better than 16:9 and the best of all 'standard' aspect ratios. But the fact that you lose too much width on the 12.9-inch iPad is annoying. In fact, the 12.9-inch iPad has a display area like an 11.4-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Too small. The minimum size of a display that I think is acceptable in 16:9 is 13.3 inches, as the MacBook Air was before they upgraded it to 13.6 inches. So, to match the width of a 13.3-inch 16:9 display in a 4:3 aspect ratio, you need a real estate of about 14.5 inches."
hi - when I was Alex recording my podcast (Minus Sixteen) I got to try out his Samsung Tab S9 and I believe the ratio on that is 16:9 and yes, I agree, you do get a better all-over experience. I do wonder how the portability would fare with a 14.5" display, but I tell you what, I'd be at the front of the queue to get one! Great comment - thank you 🙏
Like you, I’ve got a fully specked out iPad M4 pro, but until they sort out the file structure which allows apps like da Vinci resolve to work properly with file structure and management, it’s never going to be worth the price. I should be able to work on something at this price, far more productively than I can.
David, the question is, what type of work? During Covid, I worked from home (many of my colleagues still do). We all have company laptops for work. Microsoft Office, PLM ERP software, SAP stock management software, and others. A busy pharmaceutical company. This was work, impossible to do properly on an iPad. I think iPads are perfect for media consumption, all internet surfing and the multitude of Apps available. Content creators like yourself have found that they are great tools for research, writing scripts, and then editing videos. And that's great, but a very niche sort of work. But saying all that, I'm convinced that the majority of people don't really need to do any real work on their home laptops or tablets. It's all just for leisure. Maybe just a few Excel speadsheets for banking/finance matters and I'd be happy.
@@housepianist I would say a computer is a Turing complete, general purpose Von Neumann machine that allows you to write explicit instructions that it will then follow. In my opinion an iPad falls in the appliance category because of artificial restrictions Apple imposes. I love my iPad, it's amazing at what it does, but in a technical sense I don't think it's a computer personally.
I keep hearing that MS Office is woeful on the iPad. I'd think that is more MS not developing the app rather than the iPad being limited. I started off the video by saying that it would never fully replace my Mac - but it offers a fantastic tool encouraging me to work in different ways....
It is Microsoft’s fault excel is not complete on iPadOS, but as a user, that still makes my iPad less capable. Whether it’s app availability or OS limitations is academic really. And this is the rub, it’s got a brute of a cpu and plenty of memory, it’s essentially the same platform as a MacBook, but we can’t use those apps, and this limitation feels very artificial. For many business users, creatives aside, the limitations rule it out as an effective work device…it’s just a companion to a laptop.
I’d just like a few things, full browser so I can inspect elements etc for scraping, full python support with vscode Pythonista and Juno are very good though and a full blown excel. As for the OS I’m good with it files is improving. I am probably one of the few who likes portrait mode for most tasks and I don’t use the Magic Keyboard when I dock I rig up mechanical keyboard and mouse with a hub
Just the fact we are watching this kind of videos, is a heavy indicator the ipad is a confusing product. I like it, I like this video, but still it remains confusing.
Agreed but for the channel and what I do, I think buying this model made sense, but I wouldn’t necessarily suggest it to friends though. But I am loving working on iPad 👍🏻

Hello sir I have bought a new iPad Pro 13 inch and I have noticed a strange behaviour, when I switch apps ( DaVinci and setting ) in dark mode in night . brightness below 20% whole display flickers on switching (left-right sliding over bottom bar ) Can you help me with this by checking your iPad in same conditions and tell me if it flickers or not
@@DavidLewisTech I was asking this only to know that flickering like this is normal or should I contact apple In my case when I switch apps display dims very inconsistently and in between flickers a lot
I think so too. But I switched them off and enjoyed the video some more. I understand you loud and clear😎. Thank you for this insight. Looking forward to the external screen video, because that is something I’ll be doing myself, when I decided which iPad I’ll take: 11” or the 13”. -written on the original 12.9 iPad Pro.
I wonder if YT has somehow conflicted my subtitles. Hmmm - I will check that out. There have been a few backroom glitches in YT this week...thanks for the heads up boys. I'm starting work on that next video today 👊🏻
