The M4 iPad Pro is here, and the hardware is some of the best we have ever seen. But that isn't enough. But should Apple add macOS to the iPad?

I barely touch my M1 mac. And it’s amazing. But the apps and drawing and journaling, songwriting, daily driver is always gonna be iPad Pro. The apps make it so useful.

Exactly. Just make the iPad Pro actually pro 1. let me run tasks in the background 2. let me code 3. better files app 4. let me customize all shortcuts Etc. Make it an actual pro device

Most RU-vidrs regurgitate you’re right, don’t think very come up with their own script or really put much thought into content. I don’t use my MacBook, I didn’t after the 11” iPad Pro and certainly not with the new 13” iPad Pro. I got the 13” to simplify and reduce devices to make home and travel less cumbersome. Most don’t need a computer and by the time I leave work as a manager the last thing I want is complex file systems or OS. My stuff is in the cloud, easy to use and I like it like that. I can edit vids, do stocks, banking, internet, & entertainment from iPad, windows/Mac OS are outdated/overcomplicated for personal needs of most in my personal opinion. I do wish they’d make multiple window smoother, stage manager kind of sucks.

Completely agreed, basically replace files with finder. Files fails as a streamlined file manager, it’s actually more complicated than finder / file explorer lmao. Multi tasking should also be more in line with what Mac/Windows can do, allow more than 4 windows, less restrictive sizing, background tasks etc. Replace safari with a desktop version, it functions as the mobile version in a lot of websites and some websites really don’t work that well on the iPad. And this may be a pipe dream but we should be allowed to sideload apps and potentially run Mac OS apps on the iPad? At least have a way to opt in for some of these more experimental features. For me the M4 iPad Pro was still worth the upgrade over my A12Z IPad Pro, as someone who is primarily a digital artist the extra performance, storage, improved screen and accessories have made my workflow noticeably better. But the iPad really could be a lot more and I still feel obligated to own a laptop for the handful of things that my iPad is incapable of doing as it currently is.

I just want 3 things; Finder comes to iPad (could even be a fun Ad) Being able to run MacOS apps (in case you need to) Background tasks/apps available on the control center (for things like exporting video or apps like rectangle (window snapping)) Also better performance (my iPad struggles driving an external monitor and running 3 apps… the M1 Mac’s does infinitely more)

I agree with you. A RU-vidr doesn't represent the average person. Most people don't need extensive file system support or advanced photo and video editing capabilities. The iPad is the best computer for someone who isn't tech-savvy. It's like a bigger iPhone, which makes it great.

I’d agree with you if the iPad Pro 13 was $1299. The iPad Air is perfect for the use case you described the Pro needs to do more imo.

those ultra basic use cases are not enough to justify the hefty price of these pro tablets. The bare minimum will always satisfy some, but it falls short for many people. We need to be able to run macOS apps, but without full macOS

I honestly think it all comes down to what your computing needs are. Recently, I traded both my Macbook and old iPad for an 11” M4, I appreciate the fact that the iOS/iPadOS usage are based primarily on one app at a time, personally for me it just makes it more focused into that one task. Ports? I’m just plugging in my Sony A1 directly and transferring photos/videos that way, works great, using internal storage to edit and just plugging it in if I need to charge it while editing. In the end, it’s understanding and seeing the workarounds. Sure, there are compromises, but I enjoy the versatility that it brings. Here’s to Apple bringing more features and polishing iPadOS more and more 🥂

I never really thought bringing macOS would be the best solution for the iPad. It seems like an easy copout for Apple and third party developers to force a half-baked experience that's not designed for a touch-first interaction. When the iPad was introduced by Steve more than a decade ago, he highlighted how the iPad's main purpose was to excel at tasks that you can already do on a Mac and the rapidly developing iPhone at the time. Now as the iPad has grown up, it's definitely more capable than ever, but the software has indeed had a hard time to catch up with the customer's demands.

Personally love the iPad pro. Still on my M2. But I have so many apps that interact with the cloud and ecosystem, that my Mac can't even access to work from. Integration isn't there.

I think fundamentally I agree. Simply iPad OS with true finder capability (like file associations, universal sidebar, a consistent save/save as/open UI) and true background multitasking (I’m fine with the current multitasking front-end UI frankly) - and adding to this proper font management- would solve 90% of my issues as a designer. And the touchscreen direct input + Apple Pencil is magical for me… HOWEVER - a fundamental issue isn’t the OS itself but apps. There is a tendency for the key developers to still insist on creating feature incomplete “companion” apps for iPad Pros (aka devices more powerful than a Macbook)… and it seems impossible to get them to not do so. Adobe is highly guilty of this. A key reason I ended up with a Macbook I didn’t want was I needed Photoshop on the road and the PS iPadOS app was a joke. The latest version does bring it closer to parity to the point where it’s viable for more straightforward work but still lacks key features like smart filters, CMYK/color mode support, Channels and a full set of layer effects. Even Apple software is guilty of this. Only this upcoming version of FCP for iPad even has the ability to edit off an external drive - and still can’t use third-party plugins. If nothing else, an option of last resort to run Mac App binaries in a sandbox similar to the way Mac can run Windows applications via Whiskey/Wine would be a big difference. I understand Apple’s hesitation because they’re afraid not only of sales but that will incentivize developers to simply not make iPad specific versions of key apps. But the devs (including Apple!) already do minimum-effort versions for iPad that are 50%+ useless now anyway. This at least provides an option for users who absolutely need a certain pro-level piece of software. And I recognize that until iPad OS has a true finder-like file system and drivers many of these apps would break, so that coming to iPad OS is a prerequisite

Great video. I agree 💯! I’ve read developing apps for touch and stylus inputs are more difficult to write code for than keyboard and mouse. Many professionals need LiDAR, touch and pencil for work. How much effort would developers put into iPad touch interface if they could be approved mainly working on the keyboard/mouse aspect? The IPad functionality would decrease with MacOS. I think the only viable option is to add touch functionality to the MacBook.

All iPad apps can run on mac OS. We could just use the apps we already use and Apple just needs to update OS interactions.

The implementation for the iPad is to do something like Samsung DEX (Desktop Experience). Until that comes out at least fix the file management system. I would be find with that for the time being. Apple is not going to put MacOS and cannibalize their sales on the Mac.

Most tech reviewers have no idea what non-techies use their iPads for and live in a bubble where only their work flows matter. There are so many people who have no need for macOS and have plenty of high quality professional apps to choose from, usually apps tech reviewers have no use for nor even know exist. I’ve seen non-teh reviewers who mock tech reviewers as “tech bros” who have no clue what others want. The iPad targets those types of users who want nothing to do with macOS nor the complicated mess that would come with all these unnecessary features. These people do not want the iPad to become another Mac.

I think it would be great to be able to run Mac OS like as a dual boot system. Like when you boot into Mac OS you wouldn’t have the touch interface and would have to use a mouse and magic keyboard. When you boot into iPad OS you would use as a tablet. Then Apple would have more Magic Keyboard sales and we could just have one device. Win/win.

Other than the limitations of 4 windows per stage, what needs to be “let loose”?

Sizing limitations, window management for open apps, rearranging apps, moving apps from external display to iPad display. All these things are technically possible, but they have training wheels attached.

@@mattgonzalez I guess you can say “training wheels” but I’d argue a lot of this is because it needs to also be used for touch, or direct input, as you stated. I’m not disagreeing that iPadOS should never improve, but I think Stage Manager gets a worse wrap than it deserves.

I want a MacOS iPad Pro but the reality is Apple doesn’t want to lose MacBook sales. We already have the Microsoft Surface Pro and 2-in-1 laptops on the Windows side. Microsoft is clearly coming for users who want a MacOS iPad Pro. Their latest iteration of the Surface Pro runs on ARM architecture only. Users (like me) are waiting for real-world tests before deciding to switch. For now, I’m happy with my M2 Pro MacBook Pro, iPad Air 4, and iPad Mini 6.

I find I can do about 90% of my daily work tasks on the iPad. Your list would be a great start! My list would include enhancing the Mail app to include smart lists and being able to select multi contacts to email instead of having to pick them one at a time. A snap to feature in stage manager or something similar. Being able to open multiple incidents of the same app in different stages.
