iPad mini 6: I want to love it so much, but...

Today we're talking iPad mini 6, quite possibly my favorite concept for an Apple Product right now! But is the mini good enough in practice? Apple's new tiny tablet powered by A15 comes packed with the features of a fully-fledged iPad, but can it actually deliver?

I think I might buy an iPad Mini 5G as my next phone. This is right between the iPhone Pro Max and MacBook Air. It’s too big to keep in my pocket so I would never take it with me as a distraction. I feel tied to a ball and chain with a iPhone in my pocket. Life was soo much simpler back in the early 2000’s when I didn’t have my phone with me every waking second.

Your problem with the iPad mini 6 isn't the device, it's IOS15. They screwed it up by changing the grid layout for widgets. Once someone at Apple looks at this mess, they should fix it with another software update/release! I hope!
@maxwelllu6330

Luke, the issue you're discovering with the spacing is not an iPad mini issue. It's an iPadOS 15 issue. I have a 12.9" iPad Pro. Before upgrading to iPadOS 15, it can take full advantage of the homescreen with basically no wasted space. However, on iPadOS 15, as we all know, Apple redesigned the homescreen that removed an extra roll of apps and also the left-hand-side widget area. That made the left and right sides of the device (in portrait mode) have large gaps and a lot of wasted space. I ended up downgrading back to iPadOS 14 since on 15 it's really ugly to my eyes and very inconvenient to my usage. If Apple could bring the iPadOS 14 homescreen back, the iPad mini won't suffer from the same homescreen layout issues you're facing here.

I don't think it's that big a deal. It looks strange compared to prior layouts but frankly the very wide spacing between apps from before looks weird compared with app spacing on an iPhone. Actually my first thought was they were trying to mimic the app layout of an iPhone.

I hadn't even paid attention to this but you're right. On my 12.9" as well, if you have any widgets and app icons on the same page, it's only 4 columns of apps. I had only used iPadOS 15 in landscape mode with a keyboard up to this point. But that's really odd.

The A15 surpassed the A12Z actually, and the iPad Mini after some testing has been shown to have way better sustained performance than either of the two iPhone 13 Pros despite being underclocked. I think it’s the ideal iPad for touch screen gaming because of the size, weight, and performance

I guess if you already have a macbook, this can be a good ipad to have since you already have a good productivity machine. The purpose would be mainly content consumption on the go. Reading e-books is the first thing that comes to mind. Watching videos/movies on a road trip, navigation for cars with a proper mount (for without carplay), playing games and all that.

Pretty much, it's the thing I grab if I'm about the house and my phone is usually sitting on the charger. I also use it for language learning, e-books, looking up recipes in the kitchen and to watch youtube videos. The 6th gen I'll probably also use to listen to podcasts/radio seeing as the speakers are waaaaaay better than the 5th gen. It's definitely a tonne faster too which I wasn't really expecting.

@shahriarfahim6533

@@mr_red13 It's not, but the mini is WAY more comfortable to walk around the house with. If you're going to be using the device for watching videos and doing some light productivity things, I'd say go with the Air since the larger screen will be more enjoyable for those things. You also get the Magic Keyboard (or third party keyboard) options as a bonus if you want to type docs and stuff. But if don't intend to watch too many videos but just want an iPad for reading e-books, looking at recipes, light web-browsing, etc., go with the Mini. It's just an awesome form factor!
@tompaterson07

I use mine for reading ebooks and PDFs. I like that I can hold the device in one hand. The iPad Air is too big to hold in one hand for a long time. I also use it for games, photos and browsing the web. So for me it's the right size. I still have the iPad mini 4 which gets very hot these days, and a iPad mini 5, as I got fed up with waiting for the iPad mini 6. I keep one downstairs in the lounge and another upstairs in the bedroom, so I have access to iOS. Don't tend to use my iPhone 11 that much. I do have an iPad Pro 10.5, but I never use it, as it's too big for my needs. I guess it's really up to the individual for what they want it for.

Your line of questioning is like when discussing cars and asking 'what is use of/who buys a Mini Cooper?' Or why does iFixit have mini-toolsets? Why are there mini-sized screwdrivers? Some people have certain needs where a small form factor works best. And you ignore the possibility that Apple could also sell these as panel attachments to large equipment.

@geoffbarnett82
@geoffbarnett82 2 года назад
The iPad mini is not too small, you are thinking about it in the wrong way, it’s not targeted against the use cases of the iPad or iPad Pro. The reason for the iPad mini to exist is to take the place of the common paperback book, it’s a comfortable, portable size device, ideal for consuming content. Doing lots of work or creating stuff on it is not it’s primary use case, it’s a casual secondary one, it doesn’t need to be amazing at a secondary use case, only functional. By contrast, the iPad Pro is a device for creating content, consuming content is it’s secondary use case. The regular iPad and iPad air devices are mixed use, everyday computer devices that can replace a consumer laptop in a lot of cases, especially where the consumer does a lot more consumption than creation. 2 main models for 2 different budgets. The iPad mini is the perfect compliment device to someone who has a small phone (e.g. iPhone Mini), for access to common tasks from their pocket and a laptop for the majority of the creation aspect of their work. The mini becomes something you can easily stash in a small bag or large pocket, when you need to spend longer periods reading or watching video on the go.

The Mini does everything the big guys do, but in an easier to hold and pack package. It’s really my main computer - my MBP sits idle most of the time. I use a Bluetooth keyboard with it when doing longer typing tasks. (For Zoom class sessions, I do prefer my the Macbook.) If they stopped making the Mini, I probably wouldn’t buy another iPad. I think there are a lot of us in the "we really want it but can't think of a use for it" camp. It is adorable but I have an iPad Air 4 which is portable enough and can be used with a magic keyboard. I am not a doctor or a pilot so I do not need the iPad Mini form factor to fit anywhere. I think if the mini had a dialer and could connect to an Apple Watch, I might use one as my phone. I work from home so most of the time I am sitting at my desk and the Mini would be fine in the car. When I needed to be more mobile, like at a concert or sporting event, I could use my watch for texts and calls.

I’m about to start my PhD and been thinking whether to get the iPad Air 4 or the new iPad Mini. I think the iPad Mini is better for getting information (same amount of information on a more compact screen is more manageable for the eye) whereas bigger screened iPads are better for providing information (writing, note-taking, drawing, sharing the screen with others). IMO, both the Mini and the air/pro are excellent choices for students and professionals depending on what they do. A bigger screen can certainly be a curse just as it can be a bliss because there is not *more* information on the bigger iPads but the same amount with *larger* icons and letters so they are way more spread out. If one uses the iPad as their primary device, I’d also go for the bigger screen as you can connect the magic keyboard to it and it works better on a desktop for multi-tasking purposes. However, if you already have a laptop or a desktop, the Mini might be a better option because you’d do the ‘heavy’ typing work on your computer anyway and would need the iPad as an extra device - and for that, I think I will buy the Mini for its form factor.

But when I looked at the 11 I thought, “hang on that’s too small” and then I found that the 12.9” in that form factor was the perfect size. I had always dismissed the 12.9” of the old shape because it was ridiculous and was like carrying a skateboard around as a tablet. But when the bezels went away and the overall size came down it just seemed so much better. I think that’s the issue here as you say. The screen size % of overall size is important.

Re “they should have made all the bezels as thin as the thin bezels on the last one” - that’s not how physics works. The top and bottom bezels have always been large not because they wanted that, but because they *had* to be. The screen has driver chips on one or both of those sides, plus there’s the camera.

For me the main reason to go mini is that it’s much more comfortable to hold. Bigger iPads are too heavy to hold for long. Also nice: the mini fits in smaller bags, I notice the weight even less when irks in my bag, and it feels more discreet in public. The size feels cozy and personal. I occasionally miss the spaciousness of the full-size, but the mini suits me better. Everything being displayed smaller on the mini isn’t new - your original mini did the same thing. I think the default text size is too small even on full-size iPads, so I increase it on both, but obviously it’s worse on the mini. The icon spacing you showed on the bigger iPad looks absurd to me - talk about wasted space! The padding around the edges of iPadOS 15 baffles me, but I kind of like how it looks. In portrait it’s like a panel with buttons, and in landscape it reminds me of Launchpad. Using the on-screen keyboard in landscape has always made the text area cramped. It’s a touch shorter in the 6 than in the 5. But even the base iPad only gains you like 2 more lines of text over the mini 5 (because the mini displays things smaller, the difference is less than you might expect). I think of it as a built-in “focus mode” for drafting, and do my editing in portrait. Whether the mini is right for someone as a main tablet depends on their taste and priorities.

went to an Apple Store today, thinking about getting this new Mini, but my first impression was not good. as you say in the review, many elements are too small. the widgets are barely legible. this is the only review that gives a good sense of the screen real estate issues - all the other video reviews glossed over it.

If they spaced things out a little it would be fine. Portable content consumption is good. Best non-e-ink e reader to ever exist. Like you said, kids and doctors and pilots. Throwing it in a purse instead of a larger bag is pretty significant. I wanted something comfortable to read and watch videos, type some emails and notes on, without having to lug a big heavy expensive laptop around. I've owned the Mini in the past but it was when iPads were just tablets. Now that you can use most of them with keyboards like a laptop, I either prefer my iPad 12.9 or MacBook (or my Galaxy Chromebook that I'm using right now to type this comment) to consume media. Even if I have to take notes, I type them and I don't read books like I used to (shame on me, I know). Among other things. Gave my iPad pro 12,9 to my girlfriend when I got the MBA. Too big and heavy. This fits inside a suit jacket, the old mini did not. The pencil works great. I love the iPad Mini. I have the previous 5th generation, and I have no interest in upgrading to a larger size. It's comfortable to hold, and can be held in one hand at least briefly. It's perfect for certain apps that the iPhone is just a little too small for, especially those that involve a lot of reading (Kindle, WebMD, certain types of education apps, etc). I like to read magazines on my Kindle app. Not a very good experience at all on an iPhone, but the iPad Mini is small enough to comfortable hold while having a large enough screen to read most magazines. I'm holding off on iOS 15 thought. Seeing a lot more "thumbs down" than "thumbs up" and I don't want to degrade my experience with my iPad.

OK Luke, it’s a year later than when you were reviewing the iPad mini 6, but I got it not too long ago because I already had an iPad mini fourth generation. For me the difference is astounding in its appearance in its performance and one thing you forgot to mention or just didn’t get to, the Apple Pencil 2! I think the problem that most of you critics of Apple products have with the mini iPads, is that you compare it with the larger size iPads and that you want it to do the same things as it’s bigger brothers! But the reason people get the mini is for is advantage in size! I use it for entertainment primarily to read in bed without it being heavy and to watch videos. For me the 11 inch iPad is too big for these things and I’ve been in love with the mini iPad ever since the first one came out!! I love the iPad mini because it’s a mini and not the bigger ones! For me Apple did brilliant upgrade with this iPad. The pencil 2 is a huge bonus that, like you, I will not talk about here. 😂

No hate but most tech isn't designed for tech youubers, I think you get but it's a easy trap a lot of reviewers fall into, I think Noah's video was a pretty solid student explainer, people get diff things reasons which can baffle someone else, like my dad has a 11 pro max and it's massive, but he wants a massive screen to read for work. He couldn't fathom why I would want a mini but since the main thing I use my phone for is a podcast machine on the train and am never far from an outlet & found the 10 too big when I upgraded from a 6s the mini felt right

I have been waiting for Apple to make an updated iPad mini-Pro since they brought out the 11" model in 2018. I have ordered the 256 GB cellular version, but, alas, need to wait for several more weeks for it to arrive. My first iPad was a 9.7 pro, specifically because it used the pencil. That one is my son's now, and I have been using an iPad mini 5 since they first came out as it also supports the pencil. I pay my rent as a consulting archaeologist and I use my iPad mini to take notes, run spreadsheets, draw maps, take photos, store archived field data, run GPS software, fill out forms, draw excavation unit profiles, watch Netflix.... Bigger iPads are nicer once you pull them out of your pack, but I need to have it instantly accessible to take notes, and the mini form factor is worth the sacrifice for the portability. I am happy to pay the price for a powerful miniaturized iPad Air, and would be even happier to pay even more for an iPad mini-Pro with the cameras, LiDAR etc. I have a MacBook for doing office productivity work and am happy to keep the iPad for the mobile work that it excels at. Most people will be happy with the entry level 64 GB wifi model - but, dammit, don't complain about the display on a "mini" tablet being to small - go buy a bigger iPad instead. Remote-work pros are going to be lining up to buy these as soon as we can get our hands on the higher memory/cellular versions. For those who say the display of an iPhone whatever Max is almost as big as an iPad mini, I say horse puckey - it is not just about one dimension of length of width, it is also about screen area. I think if you are wondering if you should buy this or not, it is probably not for you. Get a bigger base model iPad or an Air instead. No, wait... actually, please buy lots of these to reward Apple so they will keep updating the model for those who need it. Oh, and Apple, please consider adding some basic water proofing to the iPad mini.

I had the exact same problem the first couple days with the Mini 6. It just looked SO small and tiny, I hated the big spacing at the sides, the bigger bezels bothered me, I didn’t like the longer aspect ratio. Considered exchanging the whole day. And then, on day three, I got a MacBook Air, and somehow the Mini seemed ok. I think for two reasons: 1- it just takes a bit of time to get used to the size of the Mini, now that we are so used to big iPads, and 2- when you have a big device for work stuff, like a MacBook or iPad Pro, you feel like the Mini is a super portable second device for chilling/relaxing and it’s ok to be small. Even the aspect ratio that bothered me at first, I came to love it as a perfect size for reading, watching movies and playing games. And the bezels just stopped being something I noticed. I came to accept the Mini as its own device - it has its own jive and that jive is GEWD. For the spacing on the Home Screen - you stop seeing it after a while too, but I do pray Apple wakes up and fixes that on iPadOS asap. It is a beast of a machine, it looks amazing, so light, so super portable, exactly what I wanted as a second device I can take with me everywhere for emails, gaming, RU-vid, browsing, social media, reading. So to everyone having a “too small” dilemma, give it a few days - its just a matter of getting used to what is a truly portable size and weight device.
