​@@MauriLuke I have one with 8G ram, 256 ssd and a slightly slower cpu than the one Luke has. It does it's job without any issue, only complaint is the battery life which lasts only 3-4 hours of zoom meeting + few tabs in safari (to be fair it has more than 500 cycles) but other than that I love it. However I still suggest getting a new M1 MBA over a 2017 MBP due to the reasons mentioned in the video. FYI I am an engineering student and recently got a 2020 27' iMac, there are no real differences between it and my mbp plugged in to wall when handling basic tasks that a college student does. @@MauriLuke It’s honestly a pretty good computer. I got mine as a gift from my dad and three years later it hasn’t given me any problems, it’s still pretty fast (I think it has gotten even faster since updating to Big Sur) for everything from internet browsing to the 3D modelling school assignments which are quite demanding. It is a great laptop that still holds up quite well. Also, call me weird but I personally LOVE the way the butterfly keyboard sounds and feels, and it hasn’t given me any problems at all. The video is a little worrying though, as now I know that if the keyboard were to fail or something, it would be a pretty expensive fix lol, however not as expensive as buying a new Mac, that’s for sure haha. I’d say get it :))

I see plenty of the 2019-2020 that are waiting for adoption. The prices for them are still high, as resellers don't seem to update their prices to reflect current models. They simply look at the original price. I think they will be waiting for a long time, as buyers compare the prices of new devices to older ones, not the original price of the older ones.

@Frederick Hall For regular consumers, yes. But the M1 still lacks virtualisation, has less thunderbolt ports, and a rang of applications does not work, which for now makes this a non buy for a lot of people.

@Frederick Hall unfortunately the reason I went to MacBook is because every windows computer I’ve had never lasted long and I took care of those things. The windows updates messed them up especially this nice touch screen one I had.

It’s only worthless if you want to sell it. I just got a 2.0 Intel MBP and it will last me years. Like the 12 year old iMac I still use on a daily basis that’s been left on 24/7 since I got it new. Works like it did on day one. M1 is great, but no buyer’s remorse here.

Although I have to agree that it is a bit unfair comparing a perfect state machine’s reliability to that of one which has had to be user-reconstructed, a valid point in Luke’s argument is that Apple’s pro tests failed to detect any anomaly. I still think that those tests are not as comprehensive as they might need to be in order to detect stress on components that might manifest itself sporadically rather than consistently. That is just my non-techy assumption, hope it makes sense. With that in mind, the constant kernel panics this unit is experiencing should not be affecting the rest of the 2017 MBPs - and as such, should not be one of the determinant points of a vs comparison. I do agree with all the rest, as well as the final assessment.

@@Diegolopezp I would suspect that deforming the unit as badly as it was would mechanically stress the connections and hardware such that it would test normally at times, but would be more susceptible to losing connections and generating the types of errors Luke experienced. I have the same unit, but with less RAM, and have not had the issues he mentioned (aside from the butterfly keyboard) and have not heard of widespread reports of reliability problems with the system (again, aside from the keyboard).

Bro, I'm one of the sad souls that bought a 2020 model back in May, 13" with upgrades. Now I just look at these new M1 videos and rub my head in exasperation. Granted, my early 2011 MBP was on its last leg and I needed a replacement, but I'm suffering from buyer's remorse in a major way at the moment.

I kinda have mixed feelings :D On the one hand, it sadly gets obliterated by a fanless Macbook Air, on the other hand I'm glad it can still run Windows, since I need it occasionally. I think the people who bought an Intel Air this year have it even worse.

the thing is even if they aren't having problems, they're half the speed of the base model M1 airs and run at twice the temperature with half the battery life.. at the same price point. lol

me too, I got both of these two , and agree with you, I love my 2015 one still on duty, hate the 2017 lots of issues, keyboard, battery also screen.
