I've upgraded to the mini 7, picking it up today. I've used the mini 6 for a couple of years and the jelly scroll has not been an issue for me. Great video, keep them coming.
Legit question. I have a mini 6 and haven't really noticed the jelly scroll. I can see it if I REALLY look for it, but day to day it has never been an issue. But I also have an M1 air and an M1 12.9" pro that I use for different purposes. They all share the ability to use the Pencil2. Why are you going from the 6 to the 7? Is it for AI, just to be on the newest hardware, or some other reason? I'm very curious because I keep waffling about switching to the 7, or just keeping the 6. I don't really need the AI functions on it, since I have an iPhone 16 Pro, and the 2 M1 iPads in other form factors.
If you’re able to get a nice trade in deal ( I got 350 for my 256 wifi at Best Buy), it only costs an extra $150 to upgrade to the new one. My battery died so fast these days that the battery replacement would have costed the same amount.
Mini 6 and 7 ARE THE SAME screen, so u are paying for slightly better specs. What a joke! Jelly scroll only if u scroll fast back and forth on purpose. Screen is still razed fast
@@PatrickRambles Maybe I'm wrong, but I noticed YEARS AGO that when Samsung went 120 Hz OLED on their tablets, this issue disappeared. I have an "ancient" 2008 Samsung tablet that doesn't have noticeable scan-out skewing (thanks for introducing the term to my vocabulary).
That was a great explanation, thanks. I’m one of those that doesn’t see the jelly scroll unless I REALLY look for it, so it has never bothered me. I’ll be sticking with my 6 until the battery fails.
I saw a couple tech reviewers testing for jelly scroll in horizontal mode, not seeing it, and saying it was fixed. I was like, wasn’t the problem in vertical mode? 🤦♂️
Well done! I pulled the trigger immediately. I bought the 256K which cost $600 and got a $230 trade-in for my 64K iPad Mini 6 for an out of pocket $370. For me, that’s a bargain. I get a faster processor, four times the memory, a faster USB , pencil Pro support and a brand new device.
I’m still super happy with my Mini6. Jelly Scroll never really bothered me. But I’m also not a power user. So maybe that’s why I don’t notice. For me it’s just a convenient tiny iPad that works well and is so easy to hold.
I’m one of those that noticed the jelly scroll very clearly. Just using safari reading news if I scroll to much and to long I get a headache. Mainly use it for gym training as a notepad now so it don’t bother me that much but I might actually upgrade just for better performance regarding jelly scrolling. I would definitely use it more for reading and content consumption. The rest of the updates I would call quality of life Improvements. Nothing that’s really groundbreaking, but wasn’t really expecting that considering where it’s placed in the lineup. Good job Patrick for explaining the jelly scroll effect and not just brush over it as many others did.
Apple really need to ditch the notion that 120hz is a pro feature. 6 years ago sure, not now. I’m glad a lot of reviewers are starting to call Apple out on this. The next Mini (I hope they do make another) should have 120hz and OLED, doesn’t have to be the best tandem OLED but at least OLED and 120hz, especially if the next base model iPhones are supposed to have 120hz too.
Totally. Even if they wanted to use ProMotion to dangle in front of us to incentivize us to upgrade to the more expensive iPads, then put 90 Hz static refresh rate on everything else. It’s still not 120, and it still doesn’t have the adaptive refresh rate, but at least it’s an improvement. 60 Hz was kind of outrageous on the iPad mini 6 and that came out several years ago. Christ, they re-engineered the entire display just to continue giving us 60 Hz. It’s starting to feel insulting
@@matttattack Yeah man it really is, they’re just getting really lazy with upgrades at the moment. Keeping back absolutely standard features for Pro devices is scummy and taking years to do it as well. It’s such a shame, I really wanted to get a Mini, but all my devices are now 120hz bar my work phone which is a 12 Pro Max which is 60hz and man it’s so noticeable dailying 120hz phone and MacBook to then use a 60hz panel. Looks so choppy.
This was a great video, thank you. I posted a thread on release day on Reddit pretty much stating exactly what you said in this video, except I got flamed for it 😂 I think a lot of people who had purchased their mini7 online after hearing reviews without checking for themselves got a little bit a little salty at me for just telling them the truth that the jelly scroll is not gone 😂
I am extremely sensitive to refresh rates. The last tablet that was nearly unusable for me was the iPad Air gen 5. It literally looked like the icons were being smeared across the screen as I scrolled. Interestingly, the iPad 10 had a better scrolling experience despite being 60 hz also. I’m trading in my 10 for the new mini due to storage size and processing power. Its primary use is to function as a companion to my eDrums, so hopefully, the scrolling won’t be too much of an issue. My main work is done the Pro and I don’t have any issues with that. Thanks for the video!
I really think it’s something to do with components. My mini 6 did not have this issue, nor did our work devices, but I could see it plain as day on my friends iPad mini. I will say I can’t see it on my mini 7 which is great. I’m loving having a mini again.
Just returned my mini 7, I think what apple did to try to mitigate the jelly scrolling is that they slowed down the refresh rate in portrait mode to try to make it less obvious but in doing so made it more choppy and blurry. For me, I think it almost looks worse than the mini 6 which I also returned. Will just have to hold out until they come out with a120hz version.
I tried it out at Best Buy and to my surprise, it was hardly noticeable, and it didn't bother me at all. I returned my first iPad mini due to this issue. So I'm confident about buying one again. I might just get the Lenovo Legion Y700 too though haha.
Was really hoping for A18, so it’d have a more power efficient chip. As well as an OLED display that gets brighter and dimmer. And rid of 60Hz already. Imagine the battery life the Mini could get with these improvements. I had been considering selling my Air 4 and accessories for a Mini 7, but I’m uncertain given this underwhelming refresh. To be clear it’s exactly what I expected, but that doesn’t make it any more exciting.
Thanks for this video. I've NEVER been able to perceive the jelly scroll before, so watching that slo-mo clip was literally the first time I understood what everyone was talking about. That said, even with that knowledge, I'm not able to perceive it on my brand new mini 7. (YES, your last video and our exchange in the comments, along with a really good trade-in deal, finally convinced me to buy a 256 GB mini 7. So thanks for that, too!)
Jelly scroll is always present in all screens, once capturing the movement with an enough frame rate, you’ll always see it. The problem with that effect on ipad mini 6 was one of the controllers of the screen. They have replaced from another one, so to me they’ve solved the issue. Apple Watch Ultra 2 (and 1 also) has the same effect. My guess is that the controller on the larger side is always the most problematic since it should handle more lines so processing is slower. But I’m not an expert. Tomorrow I will receive my iPad mini 7, having the 6 which gave me a little crazy with the movement I could tell the difference. On your video it seems about half the delay on the 7 compared to the 6, probably would be imperceptible if don’t recording at 120 or 240 fps
@@PatrickRambles not too bad, but agree with you that the main issue on the ipad mini is the low frame rate. Apple is giving only 120 Hz refreshing on devices over $1100, they push benefits to the maximum they can… To me is a dangerous strategy because they create kind a love-hate reaction on the clients. Success in selling numbers is not the only variable to a long life company. They are getting worse and worse reputation on terms of “thinking about clients”
Guys, I recently switched from the iPad Pro 11” M1 to the iPad Mini, and it’s been a fantastic decision. If you need a “Pro” experience, just get a Pro iPad. For me, if I have demanding tasks, I use my MacBook or iPhone Pro Max. The iPad Mini fits my needs perfectly and handles everything I require with ease. And for those concerned about the bezels-honestly, they’re not too big. They provide just the right amount of space to comfortably hold the device without accidental touches.
I'm one of those fortunate people who isn't bothered by the jelly scrolling thing and can barely see it. I also legitimately don't notice much of an improvement with OLED screens over LCD with the exception of the peak outdoor brightness or in very low light environments where the backlight bleed becomes noticeable on some LCDs. Now refresh rate, that's something I do notice and it's always disappointing when I pick up and use a device with a 60Hz display these days.
The benefits of OLED displays become apparent when the screen is bright and the blacks are super black. It's because the pixels are effectively turned off which results in a much darker black. Other than that, a nice LCD screen can look almost as good, I agree.
I almost returned my mini because of this. I ended up keeping it and still like the device. But it's baffling that they didn't fix it in a 2nd gen update.
Still on the fence about this little iPad (Even though I hardly noticed the jelly scroll on a display model). I’ll hold off until the full review from yours truly on whether I’ll be essentially “Downgrading” from my old 3rd gen M1 11’ Pro…probably will eventually regardless! Great video as always Mr Rambles, thank you.
It would have been so awesome if Apple tried to improve upon the iPad mini and create a true successor because the iPad mini 7 isn’t a true 7. even Apple doesn’t call it the iPad mini 7 but instead „iPad mini a17 pro“. Heck, it not only uses the old shell etc but doesn’t even come with new wallpapers. 😂 Maybe the iPad mini 8 will be a more modern design because personally speaking the iPad mini 6 is my favorite and most used Apple device (next to my Apple Watch). Guess I want an iPad mini PRO 😂
👏🏿Ok, ur definitely the one I’ve been waiting to hear from on the mini 7. This is just a little teaser, can’t wait for the full review. But i believe, I’m still going to pick it up. Thanks for the great content, peace and blessings ✊🏿.
With how much tech has advanced…I thought they would be able to put Oled into the iPad mini without increasing the cost of the iPad ….guess profit is not there yet. The refresh rate is not that big of a difference to me unless im doing some FPS games, but Oled has been a major difference in all facets.
Thanks Patrik. I can clearly see now that they have improved it. I returned an Ipad Mini 6 exactly because the Jelly Scroll was too much for my eyes back then.
I have literally had the mini 6 twice. The first time I felt like my eyes could not handle the 60 Hz and the wonky, shrunken down resolution. But I bought it a second time just to use as an E reader and RU-vid device, and in the end sold it again because of the display, and just switched back to my 11 inch Pro and a standalone Kindle. The thing is that I don’t have anything against 60 Hz necessarily. I currently use an iPhone 15 Plus, and the implementation of 60 Hz on that phone is much, much better than the implementation on the mini 6. There is something about the antialiasing used on that phone that makes 60 Hz fundamentally different than on the mini 6, or even on iPhones that you might limit to 60 Hz to try out the resolution. It’s just better. I think it’s the wonky implementation of 60 Hz on the mini 6 that made the “jelly scroll“ issue feel so awful. So whether or not they re-oriented the display controller, if it’s still the same 60 Hz implementation with none of the technology used on later 60 Hz iPhones, then it’s still going to drive people crazy.
Thanks a lot for your explanation of the Jelly screen. It's such a mess that Apple offers us 60Hz and Jelly screen at the same time in 2024😄Take care, Patrick!
Thank you for the review, I was especially looking forward to a review from you, as it is the most accurate and truthful, but as I thought, the jelly remained, but they really reduced it, but at 60 hertz, it will always be noticeable.
I have noticed a jelly scroll effect on my 7 in portrait. It’s pretty minor so it doesn’t bother me but I never had a 6 so I can’t compare. It really should have a 120 Hz screen, though.
Yep. Same for me, it's there but it doesn't bother me. It didn't on the 6 either. Some people really have a hard time with it, even get headaches. Agreed on te 120hz
I have two iPad mini 6’s in my household. They are both used a ton! Jelly scroll has never been an issue on either for me or my family. With respect, I personally cannot believe how overblown this is. My advice is to STOP obsessing about it. 😂
Thanks, very helpful, and confirms what my eyes tell me. I had a mini 6 and it literally made me nauseous and gave me a headache, so I ended up only being able to use it for reading books that scroll left-right. Preordered the mini 7 hoping it would be fixed, and immediately saw it still happening. But you're right - it IS improved. I haven't used it enough yet to know if I'll still get headaches and get sick from it, but I'm crossing my fingers... time will tell over the next couple weeks.
Perfect description of the jelly scrolling problem , a shame how apple plays with its loyal costumers, i have being waiting 3 long years to renew my son`s iPad mini, i find no reason to upgrade , 60 hz its a shame nowdays, no oled or mini led another shame, that messed up processor another
@@PatrickRambles, All this time watching your videos, I never knew you were Dutch, lol. You do an excellent job hiding your typical Dutch accent in English-way better than our politicians can, hahaha. on a side note, I really enjoy your videos! keep up the good work ;)
To be honest, earlier iPad mini does not have jelly scroll issue, whichever the orientation. Even my first gen mini does not so a lot of those reasons just doesn’t make sense
Since use in landscape only..why did not see nor care. 6 has been my daily tool and use over the phone. So moving to 7 not because of what tech folks need but storage for me. Thanks Pat. I think you guys worry too much on nonessential issues. You have other tech to keep you entertain.
It's not an issue for me personally but there are people that legitimately get headaches from this. It's highly subjective and for those people it really is a big deal.
It pisses me off that Apple opted to make a lame half-fix for this issue rather than upgrading the display to 120Hz Pro Motion technology, which would have actually eliminated the problem.
I just don’t understand Tim Cook’s reasoning with this update. Even though there will always be people who complain, all they had to do was even just put a 90 Hz display and bump up the brightness to what? 700 -800 nits? That would’ve been enough to satisfy many of us in that it would have least been an incremental update. But they did nothing. And why no A18 processor?? 😣 I have a fifth generation mini. I’ve been waiting a long time to update and I’m really reconsidering doing it this time. I’m losing faith.
When the $500 iPad mini 7th generation has a much faster USB-C transfer speeds than the costlier non-pro iPhone 15 and 16 models.☠️ YIKES! Look at the LENS FLARE issue with the 14 Pro’s that they said they fixed with last years 15 Pro during their keynote and they said the same thing with the 16 Pro’s in their keynote this year too but it is not patched at all.
I feel like the only person in the whole who doesn't care about jelly scrolling. It doesn't bother me in the slightest and has no impact on my use of the device. That said it should have been fixed for the release of the next iteration of the device. But Apple clearly didn't care about this release. They've done as little as possible here.
I was not expecting OLED 120hz Pro Motion 1000nits; but I was expecting something. LCD 90hz or just OLED still at 60hz 600/700/800 nits ….. just something 😡!!!
