This right here is a very good review, i was thinking taking 256 gb storaged but now that you've said it i think im gonna go with 128 also. This will be my very first apple item if ever so i do deep research and watched whole bunch of review but your video is just what i need.
I am glad I was able to help! I reviewed a bunch of SSDs recently, so if you ever feel like you need to move some stuff off the iPad, check that out. Currently Lexar and Crucial SSDs are my go-to. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hg2AVhkJ-uw.html
Yeah, the only one that comes close is the Lenovo Legion Tab Y700 series but those aren't available in North America. Software support on those is terrible too.
Every reviewer on RU-vid that disclosed they bought the iPad mini 7 with their own money says the Jelly Scroll is still there. with that being said I got the iPad mini 7 by upgrading from the iPad mini 6 that I had for three years and it only cost $260. It was absolutely worth it just to have the quality of life upgrades to keep it relevant. In my opinion a mini is a complementary iPad to someone who already has a pro or an air. As a mini is best suited as a device used for media consumption, whereas the iPad Pro is a workhorse. When it comes to value the iPad mini 6 was technically a better value at the time due to having the most current chip versus the iPad mini 7 which has a binned version of last years chip. also, the design was the new design at the time unlike the current recycle without any change to the design at all. With that being said if it’s a trade, it’s absolutely worth it just for the double space for the entry level, the increase of RAM, the faster USB-C, and the better chip along with the slight improvement to the jelly scroll.
I’m just happy we got an update at all. Android has completely abandoned this form factor and I’m not really willing to pay for more than double the price for a foldable that I’m not confident will even last 5 years minimum.
You're right about Android. There isn't much in competition, which is a shame - Maybe if there was, Apple would pull their fingers out. The foldables are not comparable, as you said - it's at least twice the amount
@rorozoro9703 I did and thinking about buying one. Yet I read about their lack of software updates. And its proportions are a bit awkward - more suitable for gaming and watching videos.
The iPad mini 7 is a smarter choice because getting an iPad Pro with iPadOS will only underutilize its powerful M4 chip. You’re essentially paying for power you’ll never fully use. The mini, on the other hand, is perfectly suited for its purpose. For me, it’s the ideal tablet for media consumption, which is what I expect from a tablet. If you’re after productivity, you’re better off with a Mac. The only exception is if you need an Apple Pencil for drawing, and even then, for non-professional artists, the mini should be more than enough. My setup is simple: iPhone + iPad mini, and since I don’t need a full computer, PS5 and the Switch 2 - I can’t wait! As for the jelly scrolling, does not bother me one bit. Let us stop over complicating simple things!
Id say its still frustrating though, knowing how much this could be. can almost guarantee they will bring a better Mini soon and most of the $500 would have gone to waste...
@@ongjanette Granted you don’t even know what ram is, I have no doubt you are a simpleton when it comes to electronics. You have the 256 GB internal storage variant of the iPad mini 2 and NOT 256 ram! Ram means random access memory!
I really enjoy your videos....but...unlike some people, I'm not a 120 Hz snob, I eat jelly rolls, don't see them, use a screen protector, I DO use dozens of layers in Procreate, I don't game, I routinely use 2 and occasionally 3 apps simultaneously on the screen, and I'm still using an iPad mini 6. Nothing is as good for it's size, price and app ecosystem on any platform. Apple Intelligence - like all artificial intelligence - in my opinion is artificial and in Apple's case is not even out there yet. I wouldn't buy any product based on the promise of future software.
😂 I love that line “I eat jelly rolls” I might have to steal it for my next video! But wow, you’re definitely squeezing all the power out of the Mini! I forgot to mention an important detail when I said dozens of layers in procreate which was 4K canvas. My bad, but realistically the canvas size for the mini doesn’t need to be 4K
I upgraded from the iPad mini 6 to the new iPad mini. For the last 3 years my experience with the mini 6 was just fine, running LumaFusion etc. I did not run into the jelly scroll issue on the mini 6 or the mini 7, probably I don’t scroll fast enough. The new mini I didn’t expect a huge upgrade, I did wish the upgrade would offer to extend the display vs mirror, maybe the next version in three years or so will do so. Either way I think the mini still holds true to itself, a really nice fit as a portable computer while your on the go on a train or vacation, sitting on the couch reading or watching RU-vid or controlling my telescope. The mini can do just about everything I want if not I can use my MacMini.
I pulled the trigger immediately. I bought the 256K which cost $600 and got a $230 trade-in for my 64K iPad Mini 6 for an out of pocket $370. For me, that’s a bargain. I get a faster processor, four times the memory, a faster USB , pencil Pro support and a brand new device.
With a trade and gift vouchers I have been rewarded, I will pay 25.00 Though for future proofing, I went for the 256 gig and will pay the extra 100.00 !
I have the mini 6 not upgrading. It fits my needs and if I need more then what it offers I have a MacBook and iPad Pro. The jelly scroll never noticed so the mini goes everywhere with me.
Thank you! the protector does a great job at not losing clarity. I find it actually helps in brigth spaces, as it removes some of the reflections/glare
They now allow this on the other iPads.(Air & Pro), that is to turn off your iPad display and use Stage Manager on an external display. This is on beta iPadOS 18.2 but I do not know if Apple has opened the mini for this new feature.
Just got mine! No jelly scroll and 60 Hz is just OK. I'm a professional illustrator and industrial designer and have no lag using Procreate or Autodesk I use a MacBook Pro with pro motion and the iPad Pro and the Mini is just as good. Maybe for gaming might not be, but for regular work and design applications the Mini is awesome.
I have the mini 6 and love it! I was looking forward to this mini 7, but this update doesn’t feel worth it to me…I would have really liked at least pro motion or “pro motion lite” on this. I can tell the difference having other devices with the higher refresh rates. If I didn’t have the 6, I think this mini 7 is worth it since I use mine all the time. But since I have the 6, I don’t think it’s worth the upgrade… we’ll see if Apple Intelligence changes my mind when it’s finally launched
I do not think this is targeting iPad mini 6 users at all, as Apple stated that iPad users are upgrading longer and longer, now every 5 years on average.
What is said, this will kill the iPad mini. limited refresh will reduce new purchases. Reduced sales will reflect at the top of apple's products, not making money.
Appreciate the perspective and honest thoughts. Respect that it wasn't for you. However, it is the perfect fit for me! :) I have no issues with the display, outdoors or in bright environments. I see no jelly-scrolling issues and have zero regrets! This is my first iPad mini and I came from an iPad pro and this feels like the most fun, and pure tablet experience I have had. I have loved using mine!
Thanks Alex - like I said I do enjoy the form factor, having been a Fold user for the last few years that size makes a lot of sense when you don't want a full size tablet, but want something bigger than the phone. The problem is that display just feels old for me, it's hard to not see it for me...
@@AlexGTech Oh yah, that makes sense! If I was able to notice the issues with the display or if I had the iPad mini 6 this device wouldn't be for me either. No judgement here. :) Like I said I appreciate the perspective, because for many people this device is probably not the right fit. We need people like you bringing in their real honest thoughts and perspective especially when it comes to the good AND the bad.
I’ve upgraded from the 2019 5th Gen. Not sure it would have been worth it if I’d got the 6th. Considering an Apple Pencil Pro, but it’s not something I’ve used previously. First purchase was a case - didn’t go for the Apple one. Let down by the lack of a charging brick, especially seeing as US buyers got one. Payback for their lack of a SIM tray, maybe? Thanks for the content.
I don't understand what the jelly scroll is. I have the pro and the mini and on my mini I do not see the issue on mine. and I can't really see it on yours. Im assuming it's worse on yours in person?
I assume it varies for individuals as I have used a mini for 12 years and never noticed it. People get upset about everything these days so I recommend that they buy an OLED 8-inch tablet if they can find one.
I bought a Mini 6 with 256GB about a year ago and it is awesome. I see the upgrades made and I'm just disappointed. ProMotion and improved screen would have been awesome on this thing. I guess I'm really just waiting for a Mini Pro which will probably never happen as it most likely be priced out of most people's hands.
This device reminds me a lot of the very first ipad😎 *Storytelling: 9 days before the launch event of ipad 1, I'd actually gotten a hold of 9 of them from a secret employee. They had wifi aaand 16gigs of storage!!! I put them out for sale for a veery high price, and I sold them all in less than 4 hours. Did keep one for myself, and I've still got it somewhere in the house. Apple got a hold of this, and tried to sue me or something, but came nowhere. Happy Days! Btw I'm not too fond of flies either 😂😂😅 Love your humor & editing.
hahaha thats amazing, I do remember how it was received, and the memes about the name too! If Apple cant touch you, I'm gonna be very careful not to upset you 🤣 and yeah that bloody fly! i missed it, btw, but its gone now!
The iPad Air & Regular iPhones also only have 60hz refresh rates. Just saying. I think eventually(probably after next year) ALL Apple products will move to 120hz refresh rate. My prediction is that the iPad mini 8 in 2026 or 2027 will get an OLED screen, thinner bezels, 1,000 nits brightness & face ID. But until then, the iPad mini 7 with it’s faster chip & 8 gigs of ram will serve me well. I am upgrading from the iPad mini 5, so this is a HUGE upgrade. But even if I had the mini 6, I’d still upgrade for the above reasons, but also for the Apple Pencil Pro support. I’m an artist who already has an iPad Pro which I love, but when I really want to travel light, I always grab the iPad mini. It’s really the perfect size digital sketchbook when on the go. So now that I can share the same Apple pencil btwn my iPad Pro & iPad mini is a major bonus. I know not everyone is thrilled with this update, but for me the iPad mini is an indispensable part of my creative workflow. I know I will get a lot of productivity out of the mini 7 over the next few years.
my iPad Mini 6 is the only Apple product I still enjoy, I changed to Samsung phones a while ago, replaced MacBook with Surface Pro (I am a Power Platform Engineer), no regrets leaving Apple, but my iPad Mini 6 is currently irreplaceable haha
As someone that used to have a 8inch samsung tablet I loved it , I was devastated when they stopped it , Samsung should bring it back. I think they would nail it 😊😊
the ipad mini 7 actually makes the ipad mini 6 (256gb) look even more appealing because the mini 6 256gb will be going on fire sales later bc retailers will wanna drop their stock. just like the ipad pro 11" and 12.9" m2 went on great sales a few months ago.
I feel like this ipad hits the spot for me to go to meetings with it, can summarize meetings, take notes and also can do gaming well(can play the new “aaa” games just like the iPhone 15 pro) yes i wish the screen was bigger and better, but for what it is, i love it. And there is nothing out there that comes close.
I tried out the mini 3 separate times and I want to love it but after a while there’s always something about it that makes me send it back. Although I enjoy drawing on my note 10 plus it never feels small because of the great screen color and smoothness when I use the mini it feels cramped and a bit uninspiring for me to draw on but I love it for reading , games and watching tv and movies. The perfect competitor would be the a fold but that’s too expensive if you have a phone you enjoy and just want a mini android tab.
I am using an I phone 13 and a mini 4. Yes, I will be used to the 60 htz refresh so this will be a good upgrade for me. As you said Alex, it's an honest I pad a reasonable price. Reasonable in comparison to paying 499.00 for a mini 6 with half the base storage.
True. I think if the competition had something to offer Apple would have gone a bit higher on the display specs but since there’s isn’t really a competitor device, they probably realised it wouldn’t be as profitable. And sadly right now, profit comes before customer satisfaction at Apple.
The person who buys the iPad mini is likely to be the one who has an iPhone and a MacBook. They don't need a big tablet because they have a MacBook. The iPad mini, which is only 7% of Apple tablet sales, is not an important lineup for Apple, and there will be no new iPad mini release for at least two years. Because of this, iPad mini can be discontinued at any time. Except for the still 60Hz LCD, +35% CPU & GPU, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, Wifi 6GHz, USB 3.2Gen2 is an overall upgrade. Note: A18pro has better performance than M1, CPU performance is 10% higher than A17pro, and GPU performance is 20% higher. In other words, the performance of the iPad mini 7 is about 90% of the M1. Personal opinion: In a year, the iPad Air will be increased by $200 with OLED, and in 2-3 years, the iPad Mini will be increased by 200 dollars with OLED.
I love it, but the screen is a big let down. If it was OLED 120 I would not have returned it. Having an M4 iPad and 15 pro max phone made keeping it not viable.
It’s rather a shame that I could spend a whole day watching people talk about all the faults in the new iPad Mini. How about for those coming from an older iPad to this one? How come that’s never explored? And for some reason, I don’t see the Jellyroll mine at all, not even a little bit.
I did mention this in my previous iPad Mini video, maybe you didn't see that one - Coming from older iPads this will feel like a decent jump, but not from the 6.
I still use my Samsung s24 Ultra more than I use my iPad mini 6. Even when you compare the iPad mini 7 to the s24 Ultra, I don't really get the use case of the iPad mini. Sure the screen is a bit larger on the iPad mini but it doesn't come close to the super AMOLED and 120 Hz on the Samsung phone. There is also a pen included inside the phone. It feels far more responsive, has more RAM, the speakers are just as good and I get to use it as a computer for multitasking when I plug it in to my display via DEX. I just don't understand the use case for an iPad mini at all unless you are replacing an Amazon Kindle but why even do that? At $500 it is overpriced. It shouldn't cost any more than $350 let's be honest. I'm afraid this is just another example of Apple ripping off it's simp customers. If the new iPad mini came with a good display then yes I get it. But this feels like something that Samsung would have made in 2018. It's just getting beyond a joke.
Apple is offering only $230 for trading for my iPad mini 6 cellular so not sure should I upgrade. The thought of using Apple Intelligence is so appealing. I hope apple finally offers apple intelligence on older models but knowing apple it is probably wishful thinking 🙂
First world problem for sure, but they're charging way too much money for only 60Hz. Even the Air has 60Hz still. This is obviously intentional because there is NO REASON to buy an iPad Pro other than the faster refresh rate display. No one would buy the Pro if you could get a Mini or Air with the 120Hz display for $600. My first world problem is that they don't have a Mini Pro. I would drop the money for a no compromise 8 or 9in tablet that got 8-10 years of support.
I think it's a disappointing upgrade because it is coming in 2024, and it looks like Apple prioritised their own profits with this - they are using binned A17 pro CPUs from the iphone 15 pro - so one less graphics core, as these were surplus and they are not going to go into any other device (except expect them to maybe who up in an upgraded entry level Ipad?) They could have stuck an a18 in it, and improved the display to higher brightness mode maybe and made the bezels a little smaller
60hz is a deal breaker for an iPad that's gonna be used for gaming. They could have atleast put 90hz on this mini. That's sad. Better get the Ipad Air M2 2024. I have the mini 6 and with minimal upgrade, I don't think it's worth it 😢
Doubled the storage, doubled the ram, doubled the usb speed ANND it costs the same, yet somehow people still complain. Ipad air does not have 120hz and people don't seem to complain? I don't get it.
Some of us aren’t blind fanboys that will unthinkingly pay for anything apple throws at us. The ipad mini 7 was outdated before it even hit the shelves.
I wouldn't get it either if this was an update from last year, but this is a 3 year update.... In 2019 Apple updated the mini 4, a 3.5 years old device at that point, to the mini 5 with 4 times the storage and 50% more RAM, plus pencil support, not only that, the CPU was 300% faster and 4 generation newer since it was the latest, while the mini 4 had an old one. That was a bigger upgrade than from mini 6 to mini 7. It's expected to have double the storage and/or RAM after several years, when a device was underspecced to begin with.... (the air 5 which came a few months later got 8GB while the mini 6 only 4)
No way would I upgrade from the 6 to the 7. I’m still using a mini 2 and 4. The 2 is getting a little problematic, the 4 is a bit better. I think it’s time for a 7, all the negatives just don’t concern me.
For an engineer, needing a tablet on site this device is really useful. It’s a good size and battery is fine. For a media consumption device this is nothing short of an egregious money grab. The screen is a joke, the specs are appalling, the price is robbery. For work, yes, it does its job, but I can’t see any compelling reason to buy this for any other purpose . It’s as thought Tim and the boys had a few buckets full of old crap parts to get rid of.
Kept it one day and returned just not worth it. I was always a mini user pre 2020 but feels to dated dare I say to small. I'll keep my 2020 pro and my m4 pro hard to go beck to the mini from them
Shame the only real competition to this is the Lenovo Legion Tab Y700 series. Those aren't available in North America, though, and they have much worse software support.
Apple save money which they pass onto the customer when they manufacture a new device that is 95% identical to a device already in production. They updated the processor, RAM and flash memory in an iPhone 8, called it an iPhone SE 2 and sold it at a very attractive price. Now they have done the same with the iPad Mini 7 and have very unusually given the customer enough RAM and flash in their entry level device. This is the iPad that I would buy if I was in the market for an iPad.
Great video. If we put things in the proper context. I honestly think this may be the worst upgrade in Apple's history. We've gotten to the point with tech that we can't expect significant upgrades year after year. But, the Mini hadn't been upgraded in over 3 years. Yet, Apple gave it what feels like the type of upgrade you'd get after 1 year. It's such a miss. It's almost insulting.
its priced at $500 and it's 60hz in 2024. stop making excuses for the biggest company in the world that's visibly cutting corners with those bezels and last years chip. what a joke.
As I've said in another comment: You won't see any competition from Android, because all of the other brands are trying to push foldable as their 8" tablet flagships, so no reason for them to produce a standalone tablet device, if even Apple cannot convince the costumer to buy an iPad Mini. Samsung would kill the Z Fold line if they did a S Tab 8" again
although I waited for this 3+ years and mini is the only iPad I'd ever buy, I am not getting iPad mini 7 out of principle. putting the same 3+ years old screen on new iPad is just too pathetic even for Apple. that 60Hz 500 nits jelly scrolling screen is what sucked on the mini 6 to begin with, but it was more 3 years ago. 500 nits is literally unusable outside in a somewhat bright daylight. it's nearly impossible to find ANYTHING with a screen that bad in 2024. even iPhone se packs a 625 nits screen. iPad mini 7 doesn't make any sense
I've come across several reviews, and some people say they don't notice it while others do. This seems to be the general consensus-not everyone observes it, and those who do often adapt, as our brains are quite adept at processing information.
Since I work in LCD technology, for the "jelly scroll", the refresh rate between the top line of the display to the bottom line is time delayed as you scroll. Therefore, you will see the "jelly scroll" more or less due to the refresh delaying time in LCD devices. It happens in your LCD TVs, monitors, etc. It won't affect me that much since I read & scroll pages slowly.
Most iPad minis are purchased by companies for sales and service associates. Nothing we want will be on it as that customer doesn't need those features. They need the same format so they can repurpose attachments and cases. Sorry it's not created to be a creative tool.
anyone complaining about "jelly scroll" are so annoyingly entitled. Creating a issue out of literally nothing to the point that it just sounds like whining. It's a damn scroll. The fact that every video complaining about it has to slow the footage down to validate their whining is so absurd. And I don't even like apple as much as you guys, I'm just a tech fan.
@@AlexGTech Apple products are notorious for being marked up because you’re paying premium for the brand name over features. Even the base iPhone 16 still comes with a 60hz refresh rate. I know you’re familiar with apple selling old tech at a premium so complaining about something you chose to buy while know that is what makes it entitled. If you actually owned the previous generation it would be understandable to gripe in comparison.
I think the issue is it’s not trying to be a Pro model- the market for this is not Pro- you have the Pro’s for that. Th general uses are for content consumption and travel, literally as an addition to your laptop on the go.
@@navkhaira1268 agreed. I own the 6 and I’m let down by how little improvement the 7 got over what I have, and feel like the could have and should have done more. But when the 7 is your first mini then it’s great for what it is, and if I wanted the brightness and OLED to use outside I’d just use my Tab S8 ultra like I already.
This iPad mini 7 is so outdated for the price. Buying a 6.7 phone would be a better option for the price Apple asks. Apple at least should off included a 90 hertz display .
This is a great device for the right person, but it is currently selling barely 5 million units a year, making it one bad year away from potential extinction. With the rise of folding devices, larger phones, and tablets, its future looks uncertain. Apple has chosen to focus on affordability, keeping the price at $499. This decision limited their ability to make upgrades. I suspect they prioritized price due to demand metrics, knowing that a higher price could lead to a quicker decline in demand. For those expecting OLED and a 120Hz refresh rate, that was unrealistic. Apple only has Tandem OLED, which requires the M4 chip because of the display co-processor. Therefore, the possibility of including these features was never viable. Additionally, Apple could not use miniLED technology, as they could not produce 11-inch miniLED displays. Even an IPS 120Hz panel was out of the question since Apple doesn’t manufacture them and plans to phase out IPS in favour of Tandem OLED. Finally, the choice of the A17 Pro chip was influenced by using discarded binned yields that were not suitable for the iPhone 15 Pros. This allowed Apple to maintain the $500 price point while also reducing e-waste. So, when you understand how Apple works, all this negativity seems totally misplaced and more a reflection of people who really do not understand the reason the iPad mini exists.
For real, they'd be excused for not releasing the iPad Mini this year and giving customers a decent mini next year. But these companies are getting so greedy that they'd rather ship cobbled together devices. It's not just bad that Apple is doing it, but them being such leaders can encourage others to do the same. I am seeing a similar thing with the Tab S series. They could have easily skipped the S9 or S10.
@@AlexGTech I think as consumers we have to understand that the market for laptops, tablets and phones are now mature and that more and more it becomes about the price rather than having the latest and greatest features. I think many of us living in this recent age of technology innovation have now too high expectations as we enter a phase of iterative upgrades. So I get what Samsung and Apple are doing, they are trying to survive in a tech world where things are challenging. As consumers we have the choice to buy or not and as producers Apple has the choice to do what they think is best for their business. That difference will deviate from the median as we move into this new phase.
not directly, I dont think - but if you’re nice about their products they will include you in prestigious launches and give you products ahead of time.
I had ordered it, but after it was delivered to my door step I had rejected the delivery. Its really not worth. The price difference between wifi and lte is a lot. Tge display on it should have been better and front camera placement too.
This iPad mini is a bit of a disappointment, and I can only hope the next one has 120hz, and a redesign with thinner bezels. It's a shame I really wanted to get a Mini but all my devices are 120hz except from my work phone which is my old 12 Pro Max, and although I'd use that a few times a week, it's extremely noticeable now using a 60hz display, my eyes have fully adjusted to 120hz it takes away so much from the experience (even if that is just using Teams and outlook on the go) it puts me off buying one. Seriously apple how much would it cost to just add 120hz even on a LCD display. Were soon to be in 2025 Monitors have 360hz displays now, 120hz has been the standard for a while, Apple really are taking the p*** with 60hz in 2024/5
I am seriously considering sending it back. I love the form factor but I still have the Fold. But I do prefer the Apple Pencil Pro for certain things... decisions, decisions!
The iPad mini refreshes left to right instead of top to bottom, so if you use it in landscape orientation, it shouldn't happen. It wouldn't happen with OLED either as that refreshes all at once instead of in a certain order.
I have the S24 Ultra and I don't get why you need an Ipad or any tablet. I can do all those things on my phone. I also have 3 times the memory on my phone. I've also have close to 7 inches of screen. That's why I don't get it. That's just me. Either way, Alex awsome review.
- no face id - still 60hz - same old panel - camera still on the wrong side - apple used left over chips from their garbage bin - still has jelly scroll but in the other position apple: "i dunno why ppl are so upset???" " we gave them a refresh gd dm " " why are sales so bad??? we don't understand :clueless: "
But I can not tell 60 hz how unless ur using two tablets side by side at all times I mean it looks great how the hell can u physically see the refresh rate I call bs
I’m a gamer that plays on an 480hz monitor and I can see it if I play on 144hz and it makes me play worse in competitive games. That being said, on a damn iPad no one is playing fast paced shooters, I got the mini 7 and just use it for watching RU-vid highlighting notes. 60hz is double that of all movies. It’s more than enough for that but if you are experienced you can definitely see the difference between 60hz and 120hz, it just doesn’t matter.
@@spectrent I can tell a slight difference between my galaxy s24 ultra and my iPhone 15 plus but barely an when I play cod mobile or Warzone mobile I sometimes prefer my 60hz iPhone 15 plus an it honestly looks smoother and play better so honestly I guess it comes down to preference
