Hi Rich, I wondered how to use the Files App, I couldn’t figure it out. Thanks to your video I can use it, well once I view your video a couple more times. As always thanks for the useful information. Kindness, Teresa
I’m so glad I chose your instruction video. I have been used to Windows file structure for years and couldn’t figure apples storage…well I’m clear on exactly what I need to do now. Thanks very much 👏🏼👌🏻
Thank you Rich for the great video! You make it so easy to follow all of your instructions as you speak slowly so we can understand the particular process you are teaching. I look forward to viewing your other video's!!
Rich, I may be the only one with this problem, but the background music is distracting. My brain keeps jumping from your voice to the music and back to your voice again. Otherwise, excellent tutorial, as always.
You're not the only one. In fact, quite a few people find the background music distracting. Equally, a lot of people find the background music enjoyable. I think I'm going to ditch the music soon. I want to help folks, not drive them nuts with background music. I do try to keep it low. I try to use music to help the flow of the video. Thanks so much for your comment and thanks for watching.
@@RichBowlin Thank you, Rich. The flow is fine. One solution if people want to listen to music while watching your videos, they can play it simultaneously through another channel. BTW, I like your tutes so much, I gave the info to a friend who's in her seventies. She loves your presentations.
Cut out the distraction of that horrible background noise, it’s not music it’s not needed what is it’s purpose? You say the tutorial is for seniors we don’t need needless rubbish noise churning away in the background.
I agree the music is VERY distracting. When I sign up for any kind of course the instructor does not play background music. Remember this is for seniors, and when seniors went to school the teachers were not playing music in the classroom. My vote is to PLEASE ditch the music. I wanted to send this to my 90+ year old Dad but the music would prevent him from getting anything out of this video. Thanks for listening.
Hi Rich, great easy to understand tutorial and I found it very helpful. I’m a technophobe 😂 but try my best. I have an iPad Pro and love it. I write poetry and my issue is I have all these poems I’ve typed which I have titled and dated but not in files 😕 I know, stupid! Now I want to at least have them in date order. Alphabetically no good as I want to know the time line in order. It may not even be possible, but at least I will know. I have already created a photo book with half of them in but need to know the date order of those left. I’ve saved this tutorial to refer to and start creating files. Thank you again 🙏🏻🇬🇧
Thank goodness I found your channel! I was given an iPaf back in 2019 so my family & I could FaceTime. I have been struggling ever since with folder & files . My problem is NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND THEM AFTER SAVING! I now realize that when I want to save a pdf & I click on d/l icon, it automatically saves to Google drive. BUT, I don’t have google drive! That’s why I can never find these! Thank you for making a channel just for seniors. I thought I would use my iPad for talking to family and keep using my laptop for everything else. But I love the iPad so much I rarely turn on my ancient laptop anymore. I need your info so much! Thanks again. I need to finish watching g this to see if I can find my files somewhere that are in ‘my drive’. 👏👏👏👏👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🥰
Thanks so much for the kind words! So glad the videos are helpful. By the way, you can add Google Drive to your iPad. Just download it from the App Store and log in with your Google Drive credentials and the drive will show up in the Files app on your iPad. Hope this helps!
I agree that this is the easiest video I’ve seen on files app. I can now clean up my mess in files and my next project is learning more about how to use Finder. I’ll check to see if you have one on it because I understand that these two go hand in hand when working on my MacBook Air, iPad and iPhone. Thanks again!!😊
As always I return to your video's to learn or refresh myself on a given apple topic and as a senior who has gone all apple I thank you for your insight and pleasant approach to this complex but wonderful world. Thanks !!!
I just discovered your videos and was excited to find your tutorial so clear, methodical and easy to follow. The information is very helpful. I’ll be watching all your videos and taking notes.
Thanks Rich! BTW, I gave this another listen, then thought about it from a Psych Majors POV, and I do believe the music is a distraction from retention. Why don't teachers play music in their classrooms while their teaching? Stupid question huh? Nuff said!
Your explanation was so good very clear and u made it so easy to follow I am very happy, I learnt about files. Thanks a million and god bless you always.
Another very helpful video, Rich! I have used documents for years, but they were not as organized as I would have liked. This will help me go through the documents and folders I have on my iPad/iPhone and get organized! Thanks so much for always giving us great tips and for talking and moving slow enough so we can comprehend what you are doing!
Methodical instructions- appreciate the time you took to make it! Would you know why some files- such as PDFs- can be found under the general Files folder, but you cannot delete or rename them? (They are not locked files).
Very helpful! But I still don’t know how to move a document or file (in recents, for example) into a folder I have created and named. I’ve downloaded a number of sewing patterns, and I’d like to organize them all together in a Patterns folder.
I’m glad I discovered this video. I’ll have to watch a few more times before I try to clean up the mess I’ve made attempting to save things. Is there some way to access and save google photos (from my Android phone) onto my iPad?
Rich, thanks so much for your very helpful videos. I just discovered you in the past couple of days and have been watching you. I love your videos and about this particular one for folders that I never knew how to find them before but I have a question! If I want to delete any of the files as I want to organize them now, how will I go about that? Thanks so much in advance and keep your videos coming.😊
Welcome aboard! To delete a file, just place your finger on the file you want to delete and slide it to the left. A little red box will appear that says "Delete". Just tap that and the file is deleted. Hope this helps!
As usual you explained the details very nicely .Thank a lot. Can you please explain how to change the name of photo taken in iPhone and stored in iCloud . It is stored in such a name which means nothing to me.
This was good information but I need more. When I first started fiddling with the Files app I discovered that I have all kinds of files all over everywhere mainly from my main computer that somehow got into iCloud and then got onto my iPad and so everything is all over everywhere. What I would like is to have virtually all of my files in the iCloud area with the ability of occasionally move something to my iPad or iPhone because like you say I may not have an Internet connection. So maybe in advanced files tutorial would be very welcome at least by me.
I plan on making a new video on the files app. But in the meantime, it might be helpful to know that the files you have in your iCloud account are not "on" your iPad unless you download them. They're in the cloud and available for you to view. I've taken some time getting my iCloud mess organized and now things don't look so bad on my iPad. Hope this makes sense.
Like your lessons. Please help me to #1 Take an email and add it to a file, and #2 as an example, how would I take one of your videos and add that to a file?
When i save a file it only save as a rich text file now what how can I see a rich text file ? Thank you so much from one of your senior watchers also I am a scribed.👍👌✌️🤞 ❤
Thank you! Even though I have been using iPads since the first day they were available, this is not an app that I use. After this excellent tutorial, I will definitely start. I think a lot that I store in Notes can be stored here. Is it possible to send a website article to documents?
I’ve enjoyed many of your videos. I’ve never quite figured out nor used the files on ipad - so thanks. I also enjoyed the little background guitar music. Is that your own music? I noticed guitars in the background in one of your videos.
You know, I thought about that a year ago. Dropbox is the standard, but I just got tired of it downloading a bunch of stuff/rules I didn't want. So I ditched it and moved to iCloud. I've never looked back ( well I do have Google Drive but I don't need it). Thanks so much for watching!
PDF challenge: I needed to send a multipage document to a business. They would only accept the file if its contents were PDF. Please explain how to scan or picture pages and convert them to PDF; and then email them. Your friend, Roger of Orlando
Rich, good video, do you know how to just plainly type a letter or document for printing?? Something like Word??? Without buying an app?? Thanks in advance
Sure. The app Pages comes with the iPad. It's a word processor much like Microsoft Word. You can open it up and type away. To print, you'll need to setup a printer. Not sure what kind of printer you have, but it needs to be compatible with the iPad. Hope this helps!
Great info, as always Rich. I’m trying to figure out how to access a pdf that was emailed to me. I’ve opened it, and downloaded it, but it’s not showing up under downloads. Is there another place to look? Thanks again.
Love your videos, but I need some help. I am trying to format a Sandisk extreme to exFAT so I can download my almost 2000 images from the cloud and free up some room. Phone and Ipad will not back up due to lack of headroom in my icloud. I do not know how to go beyond opening the files app, I am unable to identify a command for formatting the ssd. Are you able to help? Cheers, Jimmy Cryderman.
Such a good video! I use Word a lot on my iPad. I notice it doesn’t seem to create its own folder. Now that you’ve showed me I can of course make one….but, is there a way to save a word file directly to the folder?
Hi George! I'm not sure. I've not tried it with Word (though I use Word on my computer almost daily). On my iPad I use Pages. I'll give it try and see if I can figure it out.
Hi, Rich. Great video! I’ve been wondering about files, and wanting to use them on my new iPad Air 5th gen, which I bought after watching your suggestions. (Love it that bigger screen so much!) Question: My accountant sent me a pdf of my income tax return in an email. How do I make a folder for it and future returns, label it “tax returns” and put the pdf in it? I’d like to use that folder to store my returns in that same folder in the future. Also, is there a way to secure the folder on my iPad so no one can open it but me? With a password maybe? I have no idea. My previous returns are in my old MacBook Pro, which needs a password to open it at all, but I didn’t do that. I am wanting to move to doing more on the iPad than on the computer because it’s old, and I don’t plan on buying a new one, as it was mostly for work, and I’m retired now.
Have new ipad and I tried to do the trick of scanning document and it didn't give me the option. I'm wondering why? Maybe something needs to be turned on somewhere?
Hi Rich - so glad to find your video! I’m an illustrator and need to create a folder with my portfolio but I don’t know if the files into put in my folder should be low resolution ( 100 dpi) or a higher resolution and should these all be jpegs? You may not know but thank you again either way!
Hi Roberta! You can use whatever file size you like. But you're limited to the amount of storage you have on your iPad. You might try a few higher-resolution illustrations and see what kind of space they take up and then make your final decision from there. Hope this helps!
Thanks Rich, your tutorials are alway very clear and have been a great help, I would just like to ask as far as files go if I save them on my IPad is there a way that they could travel across to my other apple devices such as my second IPad and IPhone much the same as photos and notes do ? I do realise that if I save to iCloud Drive that I could download to my other devices, its just for the times that I’m out and about and don’t have internet connection.
Great video! Files has always confused me. What if I want to be sure a file is backed up in iCloud? Do I save it in my iPad folder, the iCloud folder, or in both?
Thanks Ellen! Save it in the iCloud folder and you're safe. I only save stuff in the local iPad folder if I know I'm going to need a file when I might not have internet access.
Ok please no one laugh but I cannot even FIND the File app!! I just downloaded a couple episodes on my iPad for a long flight and looked all over for the file app, nothing. Even swiped and did a search for the app, nothing. Thought it was on my iPad automatically? Before I do anything I’ll check with my husband who will probably tease me and one of my grown sons who will also tease me but that’s ok. I’m learning and I’m grateful 😂❤
I still cannot move documents into a folder I have created, where you pulled up Safari then dragged a file into the folder I couldn’t get the two pages up together, I had either safari showing or the document whereas you had a split screen so was able to drag the file across. HELP !
You sure can. To do this, I just remove all the apps on any screen I have. I don't delete the apps, I just remove them. If you tap and hold on an app you'll get the option to remove it. When you remove it, you can still find it in the App Library. Hope this helps!
Good video but I have to tell you you that the analogous app on android is much better. For example, one drive on the android app shows me my albums while does not. Is there another similar app I could use? BTW how can I move that annoying mini keyboard around on my screen . Do you have an email I can contact you on?
If you're file is in iCloud Drive and your iPhone and iPad are using the same Apple ID, then it's already there! Just open the files app on your iPhone. Otherwise, you could email it. Hope this helps!
I was looking in my files on my iPad and saw a lot of what I think were screenshots. I have never saved a screenshot to a file . I tried experimenting by taking different screen shots and saving to photos . All are saved in photos and very random some are saved in files. I looked for an answer online and just found others with the same issue. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks for any help. These screenshots are in file under recents .
Hi Rich, I came across your video as I was searching for a way to scroll or slideshow through jpeg screenshots taken from my PC which are located up on a NAS, I just used the "connect to server" option within the files app and connected to my NAS (Network Attached Storage) I can see all of my screenshot pictures within the folder but can only select one at a time, I'd like to be able to scroll through them as I would photos in the photos app on the ipad. Is this possible? Thanks Randy
They are 2 separate apps for different tasks. Notes is to jot down notes. Files is a file manager app that lets copy files between your iPad and other services like Google Drive, iCloud, or an external drive you may have plugged into your iPad.
Sir in my ipad when I am using file app the files bar is not pinned. I have to slide or tap on the top left corner icon to open file bar. Sir I need to pin it there like you have in this video. Please please reply
I'm in "dark mode." You can access this in Control Center and with between light and dark mode. I film in dark mode because light mode just looks all washed out when I watch it. Hope this helps.
