After watching this -- I've definitely decided - I'm going for the iPad mini. I think I'm getting it for the reason most people steer away from it -- the size. I'm currently using a 10.1 Samsung tablet for drawing -- and even that feels too big sometimes. I prefer smaller sketchbooks, and always have hated drawing on large canvases -- ever since my first art lesson at school. Can't wait to finally experience the procreate app!

I've always appreciated how portable the iPad mini is ever since I bought the first generation model years ago. (I thought the then new Google Earth was fascinating and I wanted something that could run a version faster than the sluggish family computer could. ) I now have a new 6th gen mini with 256gb, and frankly, it's overkill for my needs. But it's fairly future proof, so that's good. Great review as usual. Looking forward to more of your videos.

I have the 6th generation iPad. Bought it 3 years ago. It’s still powerful. I will get the iPad Pro though eventually. Need the massive battery on it since I do use it for shooting workout videos. They are long. At least 20 minutes. It can go longer too depending on what workout I want to run. The pencil feature is used too since I use that for writing down workout plans and I do animations when I explain different things that comes with training principles.

Brad, I second you. It is all about use case... Often times we get way more than needed thinking it will make a difference or simply to feel satisfied. I had been off the apple grid for a year now, my surface book 3 does it all for me (biggest drawing screen at 15" with full OS handy dial etc but also because I mainly use Rebelle 4 which needs a desktop OS) and iPad Pro 2018 1TB 6GB ram etc etc was just sitting in the drawer... I traded it for the new mini and it's just sooo cute... looks, feels and works premium (just like iPP really), perfect for my occasional use (mainly when I feel like Procreating)...as you mentioned, the lag is not noticeable because drawing is not an olympics event... so long as I get smooth jitter free lines, high responsiveness (pressure and speed) and palm rejection it's a good iPad for me...and it doesn't get cuter than the mini... Did I mention it's cute?

I bought the ipad air 4 five months ago as an upgrade from the ipad air 3 and imo it was worth it. That little extra screen you get when upgrading from 10.5 to 10.9 really did make a difference for me when drawing. Felt less cramped and was able to use more of the screen (using clip studio so UI does clutter up the place). My only little downside would be to tell others to protect that touch ID sensor. Due to the way cases are designed the touch ID sensor has to stay exposed and I sadly bashed mine. Take care of yours. :P

I’m not a professional RU-vidr but I actually DO film all my video tutorials on an iPhone (Pro Max) and edit all photos and video work on an iPad Mini 4-the Apple Pencil makes it so much easier to edit. Granted, I don’t shoot cinematic stuff nor am I a filmmaker that shoots or edit anything in 4K but I can honestly say I’m one of those who can say my work flow is almost entirely based between an iPhone and the iPad. (Any heavy lifting I need to do in Illustrator I do on my iMac, because the app version just isn’t there yet) Love your videos, Brad and greatly appreciate the artist’s perspective you bring to tech. Thanks for this awesome video! I'm a student saving up for an Ipad. As a creative, one of the main things I'm looking for is how good it is with the apple pencil as well as the portability of it to bring to school with me to take notes. I have the Ipad mini 5th gen and while it's good (I love it honestly) the screen size is a bit too small for me. So I think I'm gonna go with the Air!

The only appealing thing about a pro model as an artist is the 12.9” does have a lot more space to draw on. But that’s it. Otherwise, the base iPad has been enough for me. I’d like the Air but it’s just not in my budget just yet. However, I’m still getting plenty of use from my basic iPad.

I upgraded from the iPad 6th gen to the iPad Pro 2020 11 inch and my only reasoning was to get more space for my work. But If I could go back I would get the recent iPad Air. I purchased the new M1 iPad Pro that is 12.9 inches with 512GB of storage. I love it and it's an absolute to joy draw on. It's so convenient how the apple pencil 2 charges. I also love the way the apple pencil 2 feels in the hand, the material makes it feel more like an actual pencil. I feel like a little kid using mysketchbook again and I haven't been this excited to draw a long time. It's a major upgrade from the 2018 iPad. I could definitely tell a difference with the screen the blacks are deeper and the whites are brighter. It's so nice having additional layers in procreate and not having to worry about running out. Its so cool having multiple apps running at once. I can use Pinterest to look for references and still have procreate open. I heard it that ipados 15 is going to allow the 16GB model let apps request up to 12GB of available memory and the 8GB model can use up to 6GB of ram. I wonder how many layers would be available in procreate?!

An odd question based on the screen refresh rate. Does that impact the screen recording. On the first gen iPad pro I had some really weird sync issues where video and audio wouldn't line up because the screen recording would record in variable frame rate, so it took a while to realize I had to convert the video into a constant frame rate after exporting to computer. Does the 120hz mean it's RECORDING the screen at 120fps? Also do all of the use usb c/firewire or whatever it's called? iPad Pro 1st gen only had USB 2, and boy do you notice it once you start uploading your screen recordings to computer. I'm seriously considering the Mini based on the portability. I mean, if you're going to get the Pro, you might as well get a wacom, that said I still love drawing on my 12" 1st gen.

I cannot thank you enough for this, Brad! I am in the market for one of these tablets, and I have been having a hard time deciding which to get. I usually default to the best product that a manufacturer makes that I can afford. My main tablets are Wacom, but I just can't fork out the $3,500 for the Mobile Studio Pro: its just an obscene price point--even for a professional (and I am not). I wasn't even considering the Air. I was only looking at the Pro models (even a refurbished one from Apple). But I may have to go check out the Air. Thanks again!
@JMulvy
@JMulvy 2 года назад
Just a note on your price point for Pro software: Costing thousands of dollars is actually kind of common in the field. For example I used to use 3D Studio Max and at one point a single license (for use on one PC) was $6000.00 Luckily, I didn't have to buy it myself, my company did it for me and they did this all the time for software licenses.
@Naurif
@Naurif 2 года назад
@@JMulvy Oh, I understand that all kinds of professional software--especially art and media software--can be downright heinous when it comes to price. I was referring to Wacom's portable computer tablet: the Mobile Studio Pro. I have a Cintiq and the older Cintiq Companion (the portable computer tablet that Wacom made before the Mobile Studio Pro). They were expensive but not $3,500! The Cintiq Companion, while portable, is a little dated for me at this point--a little slower and not nearly as neat and trim as the iPad products. The Companion barely fits in my bag. The iPad pro seems to do almost everything that the Mobile Studio Pro is capable of doing and at a much cheaper price point. At this point, the iPad Pro might be more capable than the Mobile Studio Pro. I just don't understand how Wacom can justify three times the cost for what Apple does with its iPad Pro (and possibly the Air as well). Jim, the more I write this, the more I think I'm talking myself into getting the iPad Pro. You've helped me, too. ;-)

If you need to read a lot of PDFs, the mini versions might not be a good option, especially if you need to read A3 documents (for example, electrical diagrams) a lot. It's also easier to view DWG on larger models simply due to larger models having more pixels (even though IMO it's still not enough). Otherwise, if you don't really need the power of M1, it's a solid "why not".

I love my 12.9. I'm an artist. Just lost my disability payments but my mom helped me buy this. I owe her so much for this. I cannot stop looking at the iPad and it is so smooth . At first I thought it would be too much screen. But I can't see myself going to the 11 inch. If I could i would get the 11 inch in addition to the 12.9 inch. So it depends on your usage. Where you'll be going with it. What you're doing with it. If you get claustrophobic with smaller screen. Etc. I love the iPad pro 12.9 and I never thought I'd say that coming from the iPad mini 5 and iPad 10.5 ( which once I thought was too big) I'd say you really have to try them in your own comfort zone to see how it is for you. Just seeing them in store or online doesn't do it for me anymore. I either ask online or go in store to check it out. With a case sometimes the 12.9 is sometimes heavy but only if you carry it with one hand. And I never carry anything with one hand. As a temporary case I got bloxflag on Amazon. It has a hidden mini pocket on the front and beautiful simple designs. Plus viewing modes for drawing note taking or movie/ show watching. Feels like your in a small movie theater. I also paired it temporarily with the logitech k380 if you're looking to save on the expensive keyboard cases. Till I decide on if or when im getting a magic keyboard. They have LINE friends versions of the k380 keyboard I got at best buy for 30$ as well. They're Just slightly more expensive. I think 40 $ for the keyboard. And the mouse an extra 20-30 I think you'll have to see the website. They look so much more cuter though! It's more aimed towards girls but guys might like it too. The have a Mac version and Windows/android/ IPad/ Mac version of the k380, one of them has Start Alt Ctrl keys at the bottom (for the Android / Ipad version) and the other version is more geared towards Mac users and has buttons at the bottom that work better with the Apples Mac flow. If you need any more help let me know!

My current iPad is an iPad 2 from 2011. It's slowly running out of things it can do, it's basically only good for setting alarms and checking e-mails at this point, it needs a hard restart after every charge (although the battery is still as good as the day I bought it, and it's been used a LOT!). I was looking into getting a Wacom Cintiq, but it just makes so much more sense to get a new iPad instead of a Wacom that I have to plug into a power outlet and still hook up to my computer, that just seems like a huge hassle compared to an iPad I can take everywhere with me.

2020 iPad Pros are more than enough for me as an artist with 6GB of RAM but once Apple allows all developers to use more of the 8gb or 16GB RAM on the M1 Pros, there's probably gonna be a whole lot more milage of these art apps.

Hi Brad. I purchased a Deco mini7 after watching your review. Is there a software free or inexpensive that I can use to record an animation for instance a simple drawing or an arrow or circle that I can use in my video editor (sony vegas) as part of a demonstration. Thanks Brad. You're reviews are really excellent.

Thanks, I love your videos. I really like working on my MacBook, but I Think de iPad mini is going to be great as a monitor for my camera (I´m a product photographer), not always is there space for thethering my laptop. Also I´m student, I like taking notes with my Wacom, but the iPad mini it's so "real notebook sice". Also love my Kindle, but some pdf don't look good there.

Watching all this ipad with procreate art really makes me want to try it. But it will be a huge investment to get an ipad that I'm not sure I can manage. The base ipad with 64gb is already RM1499 in Malaysia lol. Not to mention the RM419 additional price for the pencil. 😂

I've been through hell and back trying to figure out if I should go from the Pro to the Air. I picked up the Pro a week ago, my first iPad in 10 years, and I picked it up for the laminated display and power. I figure right now I"m really into drawing, but I also want to get into photoshop and video editing, and I thought having that headroom was a good idea. The thing is it only has 128 GB... which sounds small. The iPad Air looks great and has that 256GB option (that I can afford), but when it is only $50 away from the Pro, why not get the Pro? It's been maddening trying to figure out if I really need the PRo, but generally what ends the battles is me saying, "Well... if I'm going to be getting the higher-capacity Air and it's only $50 less than the base-level Pro, I feel like it just makes sense to go up a tier." I don't play games or download movies or music, but I see how much space art pieces are taking up already and I'm concerned about the future. But I guess you could always, you know... offload them. And I wouldn't anticipate needing to do that for a while. This is what I'm talking about. This rambling just keeps happening! Anyways, your videos have helped me a lot in many ways, thank you.

This was a great and thorough review, but unfortunately this is the closest video I've found to how the overall drawing experience is using ProCreate on the iPad mini. I'm not entirely sure what else you could have added to what you already spoke about, but I'm still not completely convinced on getting the iPad mini just yet. I use a wacom tablet primarily for 3D modelling, but I'd still like to have a portable tablet for illustrations, doodles etc.

For me it comes down to screen size - now that I've gotten used to a 12.9-inch screen (have a 2nd generation iPad Pro), I'm not sure I could go back to something smaller. This is especially true for drawing, where i really love having the extra space. If Apple made an Air with a 12.9-inch screen I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but so it goes.

Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it, but the older iPad pros have 4gb ram; maybe 6 with max storage. Not 8. Anyone looking for a deal on the 2018 models: 64gb is enough for me; I don’t need to move stuff a lot, but I do it regularly anyway and take other space-saving measures like cloud hd photo storage.

I still recommend getting the iPad pro simply the fact that it is capable of doing other things besides just illustration. You can watch movies in HDR, play games, write notes if you have the magic keyboard, and many things more and all with 120hz. And the best part is that you don't have to worry about upgrading for the next 6 years so by that time it would've been worth every penny.

I think the best iPad for most is iPad 9. Yes, before there was a storage issue, but with 64Gb this is great. Sure, you can pay twice as much for Air 4, basically for better design and screen (and speakers for some) but overall base iPad does everything that Air does. If the price difference was within 30% then Air could be a better choice but with current pricing base iPad is just better

What I'm enjoying a lot about the Pro is the screen size, 12.9 inches is just lovely. And yeah, it's probably overkill power-wise but at least that means it'll last me for years and years to come :) Cost-Benefit and whatnot. Either way, I do not regret buying this thing, it was a really good investment for me but if I were to get one for my wife, who literally just would like an iPad to draw on and do nothing else, I'd go standard or Air. Either way, really good buying guide!

Here in 2022, I'm wondering if buying a certified Pro/12.9 from 2018 is a smart buy if the alternative (due to budget) is the new Air, with smaller screen. I am only using Procreate, so using the Pencil 2 is important, and the larger screen size is always good.

Funny story, they did a zoom call with me last year to show me the iPad Illustrator app and sent me the pillow as a thank you. I had no idea it was coming and had totally forgotten about the call by the time it arrived. So I combed all my credit card statements trying to figure out when I had bought the pillow. Eventually I looked in the bag and saw the thank you card and put it all together 😂

The biggest reason I'm inclined to get the iPad Pro (besides the refresh rate) is the screen size. I'm not sure how important that extra inch of screen is though, so I was wondering, to those who have an iPad for illustration purposes, do you think the Pro's size is worth it?
@4tarobyte

A late response, but I've been drawing on my 11" ipad pro for a year and sort of wish I'd gotten the 12.9" since I like multitasking or having another app up for reference! I don't have a mini for comparison but like drawing on printer paper, and that's basically the size of a 12.9" ipad pro, iirc.
