The fact that even such a video comparison exists speaks volumes to the state of smartphones and computational photography. I of course "can" get better shots from my dSLR, but that requires shooting in RAW and significant manual post image processing. It's amazing what a modern smartphone can do right out of the camera. Times have certainly changed. I really wish companies like Nikon and Canon can do what Apple has done with their ProRAW format. Imagine building in Apple level of computational photography that is editable based on results from a full frame sensor. That would be amazing.

Meh. when you inspect the picture, you see a lot of oversharpening to overcome the noise reduction applied to compensate for high ISO due to small amount of light of the tiny sensor. Smartphone pictures are of mediocre quality.

It’s amazing how far smartphones have come in terms of photography. For the average person, there is no reason anymore to buy a proper camera. Sure, a DSLR/Mirrorless has a much better image quality, but most people will only look at their pictures on the screen of their phones. And even if they print out their photos, it’s usually only in small sizes. Therefore the difference in quality is negligible most of the time.

Addressing the sky exposure issue. I love what Apple has done. I'm a portrait photographer and Adobe Photoshop ambassador. The HDR quality for everyday use is an upgrade from the normal portrait mode and the ease of use as close as people get to things to photograph them is well fitted. That being said, it's still mostly software than actual lens work. The lens are better, but the reason there's halos on top of the trees and the skies are "exposed so perfectly" is because the phone camera software is guessing where the sky is and bringing down that exposure automatically. You are instantly losing information. As a professional, this is absolutely something you want to avoid. Anytime you edit an image in software, you are losing information. If you do not have proper lighting and settings exposure, you will not capture information. A good way not to lose sky in an image is to bring down the camera exposure and light your subject. If it's a building, you study the lighting for optimum exposure. That being said, if this isn't your job to devote the time to this study, you simply do not have the time to wait, or the image itself is a one and done shot... the iPhone 13 pro max is perfect. Professionally, it doesn't start to be problematic until you start trying to deviate from HDR style... it's all it's got.

I''ve been professionally taking photos since the 1970's shooting weddings in the 1990's and since the early 2000's, shooting real estate photography. And I've read a lot of reviews/opinions from old photo dogs like myself who still swear that the camera is ALWAYS better than an iPhone. And for shooting indoor real estate photography, select landscape, weddings, etc., a camera is always better for many reasons. BUT, when it comes to shooting on-the-go shots, nightime city life, street photography, and even some landscape, people, animals, etc., I am personally seeing that the iPhone imagery is leaps beyond what my $3,500 Nikon D810 and lens can produce. PLUS, I don't have to use my tripod which ALWAYS send up red flares to securty in parks and cities (I'm now living in London and just about got tackled when I opened up my tripod, while e-bike and e-scooters are running over pedestrians). That's a blog on its own... The Trouble With Tripods! Great video and thanks for posting the side-by-side images, as I just did a side-by-side last night and overall, the phone won!

I think that you cannot campare these tools that are totally different in terms of capacities and for who's adressed. dynamic range of nef file is superior to what is shown in the examples. you can get the same results through lightroom or other raw software. I'm even sure that if you push the saturation, vignetting controle and d-lightening you're close without having to do computational imaging. images on iphones are oversharpened and over saturated to my taste but a lot of people likes this rendering straight out of the camera to post on social media. at the end, those are different (both excellent) tools for different purposes and/or needs.

Finally, someone with sense. It's like putting Cesna plane and a car in town streets and comparing how much more easier and comforable it is to use a car for travel. @maxone007
@maxone007 3 года назад
You are right but just like Oleg mentioned in the video, DSLR photographers will shoot in raw but then it requires much more post processing work and time. The idea is to show that iPhone can achieve great results on the go without additional input and have similar results next to the expensive and professional DSLR cameras.
@josejuncal9342
@josejuncal9342 3 года назад
@@maxone007 I understand the point of the video to showcase the IQ of the iPhone but I'm sorry but to my eye results aren't equivalent. A 24mp full frame sensor will get better results than a tiny 12mp sensor with noise and dynamic range. if the purpose of this video is to compare tools on the go, like shooting pictures on vacations it would be more interesting to compare to some more compact camera such an x100v or Ricoh (despite of not having interchangeable lens, you can still crop)... you mention expensive cameras but iPhone pro max isn't a cheap phone and you can get better results with cheaper camera than an iPhone pro max. iPhone made a good step with the photographic profiles but it is still missing full settings of picture profile to set sharpness, saturation, noise etc. before shooting
@zarkozi
@zarkozi 3 года назад
@@maxone007 I like how the term "expensive" is so easily attached to DSLR cameras. For comparison, my Nikon D750 is almost 8 years old by now. I paid for it a little more than $1500 new. Today, its in good condition, I can easily sell it for 900-1000$. And I don't want to ! Because it's still great camera. It's very relevant and still widely used in professional photography today. How many iphones did you change from 2014? How much did it cost you in total? I undersdand comparing current iphones to DSLRs has been a thing for a while and it's great marketing. But in reality, it's missleading to someone who might actually want to get into photography. Because it's compared by people with very little knowledge about photography and DSLRs. And its actually not even that hard ! I personally edit in Lightroom every picture I take from my iphone. Just as I do for my camera raws. It takes seconds. All what I'm trying to say. If you want to make a great picture, a banger from a once in a lifetime trip, that you want to show to everyone and print on the wall... you will never be able to do it with iphone. Even if you don't know how to edit your photos, you will learn someday. And you can go back to your old raws and apply the new techniques. The posibilities are just sooo much greater with DSLR. And its actually waaay cheaper on the long run ! It will save you much money because you won't be buying next iphone just so you can get that little more better camera. You already have your DSLR for that. I'm speaking only from experience.

I have 2 words for this: 1) computational 2) photography. The iPhones automatically process the captured images. But "fiddling around" with the images generated by a DSLR/mirrorless camera would yield the same -- or better -- result. iPhones are the epitome of convenience. DSLRs/mirrorless require work and knowledge. ... iPhone photography is for those that would purchase a sports car with an automatic transmission.

As someone that shoots in the raw on my iphone camera, this is an even more interesting comparison to me, so glad I found it. When shooting in the raw on iphone I have good results, but only when willing to manually adjust every factor like zoom old school, since you are relying on none of that pre-processing digitally or auto functions of a dslr. I will say, putting a macro lens with a diffuser on an iphone, makes me feel like I might not need to buy a new dslr upgrade, only new phone models. Will be looking forward to if you make a video comparing the new iphone 15 when it comes out, if it does have the rumoured periscope lens.

One thing about “digital sharpness”. Apple does a lot of work in camera. Using the Nikon, you have to do the work in a separate app. But they’re both digital sharpness and corrections. That’s one thing people have to understand. But also, the 24MP sensor vs the 12MP sensor requires more sharpness correction on the lower rez sensor. So it will be somewhat more obvious in higher magnifications. But comparing the iPhone to a full frame 24MP sensor is tough. A more interesting comparison would be to a 4:3 sensor camera and lenses, which only goes to 20MP.

It depends on what you choose. You have the alternative of taking dozens or hundreds of photos with automatic fire, letting the software on your phone do all the "art" of taking the photo that is close to perfection but to the conception of which you did not contribute much (out of several hundred photos, you surely choose ten very good ones to admire on the already oversaturated Instagram) or choose your own camera settings (manual of course) and then spend with the several dozen RAW photos on Lightroom to bring out something remarkable. The act of photography is for many also a form of meditation, of union with the reality that surrounds you and not just a simple push of a button. This is also about personal satisfaction for many of us, the satisfaction that that photo is your own creation and not the computer inside the over-tech phone

Thoughts are pretty simple. Look at the combine cost of a DSLR with additional lenses versus the iPhone which is also a phone. Then compare the perceived difference or improvement of the dedicated equipment and its plain to see it really isn’t worth it for the average consumer.

The technology in smart phones is moving faster, however we can not compare phone with DSRL or mirrorless camera, to me it’s like comparing a motorbike 🏍 with a truck. They both move but one is made to carry heavy and large load, while the other was made to carry no more than 2 people only. Same as DSRL Or mirrorless camera vs phone camera. When comparing these 2, let’s not forget about what these 2 were made for. The phone is primarily made for calling and texting, the rest of these specs are just additional but not primarily. While DSRL or mirrorless cameras are primarily made for the proper photos with right settings, rights lighting, location, editing techniques ect… Tommy opinion, phone is personal while camera is professionally

Bro it's simple. U buy an iphone, u got to update in 3years. Else u buy a camera, with good editing skills u can match or beat any phone. The level of detail u can pull out of cameras is superior. Low light will be crisp and with very low noise, creamy highlight roll offs. Better HDR videos. U can upgrade by investing in better lenses. The camera will last u 5yrs to even a decade. Iphone uses tiny sony sensors. The A7C is full frame. U might think you'll get better DR in pictures on the iphone, it's true, iPhone RAW pictures have insane DR. But u can do exposure bracketing and image stacking with cameras too! Don't let AI bury the potential u may have. Unleash it and get creative. Hope I helped u figure it out. I know you'll buy an iPhone. Who doesn't wanna try that right. But you'll be much more satisfied with the camera when you'll get to edit stuff. Do professional grade video recording. Might even be movie quality. You could shoot weddings, events and keep high quality files for future processing trends. Iphones are stuck with AI enhancements of the current generation. Be mindful of this.

DSLRs have picture profiles, so you can have a more saturated jpeg right out of the camera. iPhones have great cameras, and they win in portability, no question about it. But quality wise, there can be no comparison. As for the HDR, even if you only have 7 stops of dynamic range, with 25 frames stacked on top of each other you could theoretically surpass even an ARRI Alexa (in certain conditions). I guess the crappy dynamic range of phone camera sensors was what made HDR necessary.

I really enjoyed this video and would agree with everything within. I have a camera with a built in phone, it’s called an iPhone 13 Pro :-) (Same as the Max but a little smaller, camera is identical on both). I’ve had my iPhone 13 pro just two days, it is the camera that caught my attention, though I had an iPhone X before this one. I can honestly say the camera is exceptional, I can’t believe how good it is. The macro is particularly good, when you get close to an object, you can see a switch/animation take place as the macro cuts in, which I like, at least you can tell it’s doing its job. The macro facility/pictures are amazingly sharp and clear and this auto focuses itself with the choice of touching the display to focus on a chosen part of the display….you can get as close as 2cm. On all three lenses I’ve noticed it’s light collecting properties are excellent too. There are of course adjustments that you can make depending which mode you’re in - focus - f.stop equivalent - lighting etc. you would need to look at some of the useful vids on RU-vid to get more info. Of course, it isn’t a professional camera, but what this does have, is an exceptional camera/video recorder that fits into your pocket, and is with you all the time, easy to use without fiddling around with a DSLR and it’s cases, Len covers, lighting modes, choosing and fitting a chosen lens and then focusing ………. Oooooops, damn, just missed a first class picture with all of this DSLR camera fuss … this iPhone 13 Pro or Max is a phone with a first class camera, it isn’t a DSLR, but you will like it for what it is …. Of course there are those that would disagree, but, would probably disagree about most things … This is my opinion, therefor they can’t disagree with that, only agree to disagree. I think, in my opinion, albeit subjective, this is an amazing piece of technology. Best wishes, Steve U.K.

IPhones take fantastic point and shoot photos. They are a great vacation camera. I love my IPhone 13. It , in no way, compares to the quality of my Sony camera with high end glass. But if you really don’t know much about Photography or Photography quality, then the premise of this video might make sense you. Imagine hiring a wedding photographer and he shows up with a cell phone. Let’s keep it real. iPhones are about convenience and it’s silly to compare them to high-end DLSRs with high-end lenses. I make my living with my camera. I’ve never seen anyone show up to a professional photo shoot with a cell phone camera.

pixels have nothing to do with it. the issue is the sensor size. its about photon gathering physics. the bigger the sensor the more light it can catch. the cleaner the pixels will look. As long as phones dont make their sensors bigger it will always be the same issue. and making the sensors bigger also means making the optic infront of it bigger(the lens). these dslr lenses are that big for a reason. phones just have to trick around that issue by shooting multiple photos at once, stacking them and raising the quality of the image this way. here the compare is kinda misleading. you compare a fully processed image from a phone(more like 15 images merged to 1. processed by a internal software to reduce noise and cleaning out the pixels) to a single frame shot from a DSLR. the only advantage is that the phone is doing it automatically.. but you can do the same with any DSLR.. take multiple exposure images with it. merge them in photoshop.. then you would get MUCH MUCH cleaner results as well. the next step is not really that phones will get better than DSLRs/Mirrorless big sensor cameras. its rather that "real cameras" will add computational photography into their cameras as well.

The amount of money it takes for a full frame DSLR plus all of the lenses is hard to believe that a iPhone is anywhere close. I don’t understand why people want to rush and denounce DSLRs. Smartphones have come a long way…great. They’re good enough. I just don’t see a need to encourage people to “throw away” pro level equipment that can do much better in terms of quality. I’m trying to say as a pro photographer, I don’t want my hard work, learning and training to produce the art I produce to be devalued because someone can do (something like it) with a smartphone without putting in work. Point: why not just support both lanes, the pro photographers and the enthusiasts that have very capable smartphones to do every day photography. The landscape is changing and I don’t want a future where peoples work on pro camera systems are diminished.
