How did you like the macro performance of the iPhone 13 Pro Max? #iPhone13ProMacro #iPhone13ProMaxMacro #iPhone13ProMaxMacroMode #iPhone13ProMaxMacroComparison
I wish that people would test the iPhones with the Filmic app so that they can open up the ISO and lens type/focus examples. They’ll crack open manual settings on the pro camera but not on the iPhone…
Really nice comparison - I'm amazed at how well such a small lens can compare with a heavy setup due to great software. Would love to see comparison on macro video as well :)
Thanks for the video, it’s a good comparison in most cases, my only comment is that to take a macro photo properly you need a bit more than just a macro lens, such as a focusing rail, and the take photos at difference focus positions then do a focus stack. When you do this, the image quality is on another level with the DSLR.
Thank you for this in-depth review, it was very helpful. However, the major issue I have with this review is comparing minimal focal distance for each lens and comparing them as if like to like. This is comparing a 105mm macro lens with essentially a 25mm macro lens due to the 13 pro max's macro lens being the wide angle. I would be more interested to see the results of 1:1 of the 105mm vs the 1:1 of the iPhone 13 pro max lens. The edges will be distorted because the macro mode is essentially with a wide angle lens, which distorts the outer edges.
yeah i prefer the iphone image on almost ALL the images. Wow. Maybe it's just cause i'm not really a pro level photographer. What i'd be more interested in is the 13 pro vs the 13 with a $50 clip on macro lens because money is tight and i don't shoot enough macros to justify the extra $200. The other things you get on the 13 pro have no value to me so when i'm debating whether to get a 13 or a 13 pro its really only a question of is the macro lens worth $200. If i could get a servicable macro image for casual instagram shots out of a $50 clip on lens i'd probably just get that and spend the savings on something else.
Apple is actually going to bring a toggle to switch macro mode to no shoot automatically, and you’ll be able to manually do it! I think it’ll be iOS 15.1
i love macro on 13 pro max because area focus is much wider than the dslr macro lens..but i think the dslr macro lens can take much smaller object than the 13pm macro
I appreciate the review. Thanks-but I actually liked a lot of the iPhone pictures in your review….. One thing that is a possible issue: is the iPhone itself blocks light if you get very near the object to photograph. Macro shots need a lot of light. I’m going to buy a light color case to go over my new dark color iPhone.
Dude this is a really nice comparison however it is kinda difficult to get accurate comparison between the cameras if you don’t really try to get the same shot on both cameras, I mean the same composition, lightning or the overall frame.
Macro shots way better on the iPhone IMO. you can get way closer and get far more details. iPhones already took really good photos, portrait mode keeps getting better, sensors are getting bigger with faster apertures, zoom lens keeps improving and now you have macro capabilities and Cinematic video. Unless you are a working professional, the days of needing a dedicated camera and lenses is about over. It would take thousands of dollars with a camera and 3-4 lenses to do what the iPhone can and it fits in your pocket. Hell, Im a working professional but Im going to be doing a swimwear product shoot with an iPhone 13 Pro outdoors in good lighting. Im sure its going to kill it. Already seen a few other pros on here with some great shots.
Dedicated cameras aren’t standing still either lol. One shot from an R6 still beats the 13 shots the iPhone has to take to achieve a similar result. My iPhone 12 Pros shots still suck if you’re moving or the subject’s moving as my R6 is at 1/1200th and the iPhones at 1/40th. Still can’t manage to beat physics.
The iPhone is very impressive but the comparison is not fair. We don’t know if the corners are not sharp because of the lens or because of the fact that the object was 3 dimensional and parts were out of focus. You need to photograph a FLAT ruler as close as possible with both cameras making sure the film (or sensor) plane is perfectly parallel to the ruler. This way, you will be able to see how sharp the lenses are corner to corner and the actual level of magnification when viewed on the screen or printed. Ex.: If the field of view is 1 cm and becomes 15 cm on the monitor the magnification is 15X. Ditto if printed on paper at 300 dpi. It looks like the iPhone has more magnification.
I hope they fix the automatic switching between lenses. Actually they could keep it, but give as an option to toggle this feature on and off. Same goes for cropping in on the wide angle lens instead of using the tele in low light conditions. Please, Apple, let me make my own decisions!
The iPhone got closer and had far more detail vthe blur on the corners is what the lens is supposed to do because the corners aren’t the focus and yet the Nikon was chosen
I love the macro mode, but I hate that transition. Though I have the macro lenses from Moment lenses. I'm waiting for the Iphone 13 Pro cover being shipped at the moment. I feel, something like macro needs a dedicated lens.
I also got the iPhone 13 pro max, 128gb in white/silver. i did an unboxing and test video on my channel! if anyone has been debating on getting it. GET IT, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!!!! i love mine and it was worth every penny, lol. i love these kinds of videos, thanks for sharing!
Apple is going to fix the auto macro mode. It’s n the current dev betta. Good review. The niko is better in many ways, but the iPhone , at small resolution, just seems more amazing, since it’s much closer
F setting to get sharper eye images wasn't done . iphone has 3 lens . pockets camera over dsLR , i go DSLR all day. Seen mirrorless vs iphone vs Dslr videos 📷 still have advantage settings . Samsung tablets have better HD & 4k quality than iphone . i would buy & go with Samsung👍if wanted pocket camera .
I have a Sony a77ii with a tamron 90mm macro lens. I enjoy this type of photography. The phone makes this very accessible. I don’t always have my ‘real’ camera with me.
