99% of my mobile photos are done in RAW. It gives me a chance to improve exposure, when edited.

Yeah I also care a lot about the RAW image quality because I’m able to get a lot more out of my photos in editing. Coming from an XR to a 13 Pro Max, the biggest difference for me besides much better signal/noise ratio is how much more detail I’m able to lift out of the shadows in editing. That bigger sensor definitely makes the difference.

Nice job David. You validated what I knew to be true. I like having the latest tech and the trade in value was very good so I upgraded. I can't think of anything other than macro or cinematic that is unique to this phone. Everything else you have covered in the past still applies. And, yes, I care about RAW image quality.

Very good comparison. Just one thing I wondered about. Did you have Lens Correction enabled on the Ultrawide cameras?

No and it's not available as a lens correction profile in Lightroom either. Either way, I'm really happy with the performance. The ultra-wide is now usable! 😊

Well, seeing as how the camera's are *still* functionally identical, with the exception of LiDAR and a single macro lens, wouldn't the RAW footage be identical to that captured via Moment even on a standard iPhone 12? (The only possible exception to this may be night mode, which leverages LiDAR for clearer shots... correct?)

I would love you to make a RAW vs ProRAW comparison on the 13 pro. I tried to like ProRAW but honestly it let me down on multiple aspects, mainly highlights recovery and details… Having your opinion on the matter would be awesome 👍

I accidentally shot ProRAW for a few hours while filming this video and deleted them all in disgust once I realised lol, but I will compare them.

@@David_Addison I use proraw a lot. I agree that your viewpoint on it vs standard raw would be interesting. I only edit proraw in Lightroom though. And use default camera app for proraw

Great comparison. Good job on the entire video. Question: If I was to go to the trouble (big) of stacking, why not just use the ProRAW which effectively "stacks" three images. Of course using a tripod at night.

Good question. ProRAW does a lot more than stacking so stacking RAW files is a great option for those who want to retain complete control over their photographic process and results.

David why do I seem to need an app to use my 13 pro max ? I will admit I will get Even Longer App as I live in OZ, I got the 13 to take photos and make/receive phone calls as my old phone is dead. As someone that just wants to take semi good photos for myself am I subscribed to the wrong channel here as it seems I need more apps then the 13 has features and also need light room and use adobe as well. Sorry mate I have watched a lot of your posts and I just have gotten more confused by even now another app just to shoot in RAW on it. Tony Australia

Hi David,im an Ultrawide user and mostly im an android user since their sensors are superior While im also using 12 Pro max the results are somewhat not that great(compared to Oneplus 9 pro) Is 13 Pro max a worthy upgrade especially for Ultrawide?

In my opinion the ultra wide on my 13pro is significantly better than the ultra wide on my 12pro, but only really noticeable indoors in lower light.

actually in low light (5:29) , the 13 pro max edited picture doesn't look much better than the 12 pro at all. when unedited(5:50), 13 showes less noise, but not much more information or sharpness. look at the words and signs in the picture

My iPhone 12 Pro Max is not yet a year old. It will take more dramatic changes for me to change. Maybe for iPhone15 or iPhone16 :)

the ultra wide is impressive, or least now how we would have expected it on the 12pro :) rest is fine. but I will skip it my 12pro max does a good job :)

Yes, it's finally usable! And it's interesting how the RAW quality has only improved extremely marginally since 2018, definitely no need to upgrade from the 12 Pro Max!

A fake 1" in sensor? I haven't heard about this.

@@David_Addison they call it type 1.0 sensor, not 1 inch. and it has 12mp, but the Sony 1 inch has 24mp... so they might use this sensor, but not to the full size :)

Honestly for me proraw is a little gimicky. I see it as a boosted JPEG: no more detail (less than regular RAW) and poor highlight recovery (compared to regular raw). The only upside would be the absurdly low noise in the shadows (but again without any details). So after playing with it I decided to use regular RAW when needed

@@louisolivierfortin Weren't the ProRAW files supposed to load as RAWs w/ adjustment sliders set already, ie. allowing you to dial back noise reduction in LightRoom, thus having BOTH the detail, sharpness AND low noise? Or it doesn't work? (Don't have access to a ProRAW-running device)

@@piotrch0 having compared, I found it has less detail than regular RAW, and highlight recovery is of por quality compared to regular RAW. Meaning it acts like « lightness » adjustment and gives really pooly contrasted skies etc. Only the shadow recovery is really good, but at the expense of poor detail.

@@louisolivierfortin That's a cool story, but it doesn't answer my question, does it? Does a ProRAW file load as an image w/ adjustment values pre-set by the iOS camera algorithm that can be scaled back manually when opened in LightRoom or not? And I'm talking about noise reduction, not highlights or shadows.
